I sold the Skyscape in favor of the Hexamid. The Hexamid is both lighter as well as roomier than the Skyscape. But to be fair, the hexamid is a Solo Plus tent whereas the Skyscape is only a Solo. As well, they do make the Skyscape in cuben so the weight would be on par with the Hexamid, but I like the floor configuration better in the Hexamid. It just suits me better.
I am really looking forward to further video reviews of this shelter! MLD just released their CF Trailstar, and I am torn between that and your shelter. If I am going to drop that much coin on a shelter, I want to get it right the first time. I am also interested to see how well your neighbor fits into it as I am 6ft 2in as well. As always, great vid!
I cannot comment on the MLD. I would say that they would both work great. For a while I wanted the Cricket set-up, but obviously did not get it, really due to money. Once I had the money though I was deep in the ZPacks tent. I honestly don't regret this purchase!
I wanted one of those Sublite Sils bad when they were around...then when I got around to actually being able to get something he had them on hold... but, in the end I am happy with this set up too...I still wouldn't mind checking one of the SS out though...and the Contrail...can we say classic...
I admit, I wish that he bonded his cuben to, but, iirc, he made have had some issues with some bonding once...not 100% sure so don't quote me. There are some items he bonds on the site, the new overmitts (I gotta get these!) and the poncho/ground sheet is bonded around the head area. Although from what I understand bonding is more time consuming so if he were to bond rather than sew, the prices may go up... Either way, Joe provides great products and superb customer service!
Nice setup stick, and such a light weight for that amount of space. Would you guess a person 6'-4" tall with size 12 feet could fit in that, plus around 3" or so at the foot end for quilt fluff? By the way brudda, you left your camera out in the yard.
6'4" would probably fit, but at 5'10" I cannot say how well...Eventually when I get a chance I am going to get my next door neighbor to come over and model in it. he is 6'1" or 6'2" so maybe he will provide a bit more perspective.
Most definitely! Keep in mind too this is the Solo Plus Tent with a Solo Plus ground sheet. According to the ZPacks site the twin size ground sheet will even fit in the Solo Plus tent. As well, you can fashion any size ground sheet you want with other materials. I am going to try a polycro ground sheet I got from Gossamer Gear in there and cut it wide just to have the extra room. But the solo plus is really more than I would have to have. I have used smaller ground sheets for sure.
Awesome video Stick!! I probably hit the pause button 50 times LOL. I would really like to get a standard Solo and the Solo-Plus side by side and see how the height difference effects the angle of the back wall. It is my hope that the higher shelter causes the back wall to be more vertical, thus helping to prevent hitting your head on potentially wet (condensation) material in the morning. Overall awesome video and you got yourself one rocking shelter here! Sub 18 ounces total shelter weight!!
Thanks John. I figured you might like it. For me at 5'10" I don't think that it will be an issue. As far as interior space, well, it's like McD's, I am loving it!
I am pretty happy that I nailed it on the estimated weight for the entire system as 17.7 oz...kinda feel good about that.
And yes, at < 18 oz I am happy. I figure that with my stakes & GS the Trekker came in at ~30 oz, so I almost cut half the weight, granted at a cost...
I saw your other videos on the SMD Skyscape Trekker. Which tent do you prefer? The Skyscape or the Hexamid?

I dont understand why Joe does not bond all the seams on his stuff. From what I understand bonding is stronger and it lasts longer and is waterproof.

A whole lotta love and hugs and kisses to the wife!
For the tent & ground sheet is was just under $500. I think the tent was $380 and the gs was $105.
