The common sense thing the umpire should have done was to either call four byes or a dead ball. The bowler shouldn't have been punished for the ball deviating as that delivery did, it wasn't his fault!
I cannot help imagining the reaction from the English or Australian media had one of the sub-continental or Caribbean groundsmen prepared a pitch of this type!
Wasn't that Sabina Park Test cancelled in 1998 because of a poor pitch? Different strokes for different folks, I reckon! :-)
@The61616112 "Never ever" is a huge statement man. Cricket history is ripe with instances of home teams doctoring the pitch and that includes your unimpeachable Australians and English.
Funny thing is when they end up doing it against each other. Like the 1972 "fusarium" test at Leeds. Look up what Chappelli, Lillee and others had to say about it. Happy reading!
@Imrankniazi well doctorig pitches is a slightly different issue than this pitch in the vid - it was just a pitch they stuffed up badly and rightly got nailed for it and so following seasons haven't made the same mistake. Some WACA wickets been better than others in that time but this one was a joke. As for Australian pitches being docted; you don't see raffle ticket pitches, generally aus pitches more likely to have something in it for bowlers and batsman; Adelaide has been a tad disapointing
@The61616112 "Adelaide disappointing" ? Hmnnn. If I remember correctly I think the greatest ever Ashes test match was played at that ground... December 2006.
@dheavyside I meant in past few yrs, flattened out a lot ... yes I agree about that match... I think even though Eng smashed AUs last yr on Ad pitch - if they continue to produce a pitch like that we will see many draws in yrs to come. I am not a fan of Aus pitches copying sub-continent style personally, most Aus pitches do break up 3 days onwards, ad holds up a bit to well for my liking
@The61616112 @The61616112 Actually, In the last 10 years there has been 54 tests played in Australia. There has been only 7 draws. And they play nothing sub-continent pitches. The Gabba, Melbourne and Waca all are suited to Quick Bowlers early, then spin late on day 4 and 5 and Adelaide and Sydney Will be batters paradises for the first 3 days, then take spin and changes of pace on days 4 and 5. We saw that last year with the Ashes. The soil properties and grass types haven't changed.
In recent yrs; The Australians got plasted in the first innings last ashes but they were in emotional dissaray and Eng bowlers were on a role. I tend to think the Ad wicket is recently too much like a sub continent wicket in that it hodls together too well. Maybe there has been some doctoring of pitches but there haven't been ridiculous one sided pitches on the whole; generally AUs wickets play well frist 3 days and start to break up and bring spin into it afterward
@The61616112 Make up your mind, kid. First you were claiming that Aus and Eng curators are above questioning. When I showed an example of an English pitch that was infamously doctored, you seem to backtrack and want to talk only about Australia. Shifting the goalposts, are we?
I don't mind you sitting on a high horse, but at least be consistent.
@The61616112@Imrankniazi Might I add: "...the series started with controversy and tantrums when Lillee tried to use an aluminium bat at Perth, and the second started on a sodden pitch which both captains objected to, but the authorities leant on the officials to get underway. Chappell, who won the toss, shrugged as the coin landed and admitted that whoever called correctly would win the game. He was right." This is from Cricinfo
@Imrankniazi Australian and I tend to agree with you. While the WACA is known for its extra bounce that in itself is not a problem, however sometimes they prepare very ordinary pitches with huge cracks at the start of day 1 play and that is a huge problem. Having said that it doesn't really advantage Australia either unlike the sub-continent dust bowls advantage the local teams.
@madaboutsleep - he did about a day earlier, although the pitch really did deteriorate on Day 3 which was when I think this video was taken. From memory Blewett was bowled by a mullygrubber from Ambrose after the ball hit a crack

@Imrankniazi Occasional blimp in Perth, at least Aus and Eng curators never ever make the same mistake twice.
