This video doesn't give any credit to the great baroque musician Purcell, so I'll do it... "WHEN I AM LAID IN EARTH" is a 17th century burial hymn written by the English composer Henry Purcell.
Just listened to the Waldbuehne Berlin performance of Sasha Waltz which was fantastic. Still - for that aria I prefer this deep voiced, non-operatic interpretation - Alison, I love You for that - a music one would like to die with
@radiussong don't be a prig - opera is made of songs. Some "borrowed" from the popular canon of their time while others become standards. Just because we call it an aria don't stop it being a song
@bronskilx using the right word doesn't mean being a prig. At the same time, nobody forbids you to call arias songs or molecules "those tiny thingies".
wow this is one unique voice. i've never heard anything like it before. Its sounds almost if she was a male tenor. The most deepest rich alto voice I've ever heard<3
Wonderful, this is such a sad song, and Alison brings a fresh approach - much nicer than the usual operah singers who crucify this fabulous melody with tons and tons of over done vibtrato. ,,,and you can hear the words....Bravo!
wasn't joking, but hey ever listen to Roy Harper singing 'Another day', similar heartbreaking sniffle music. This Mortal Coil (Blast First records) do a version and all, just a thought
what an emotion,,,she sings it so beautiful.....great................i know here songs, but this is farout the best,,,her voice is breakable and yet son strong

A very nice non-operatic version ... but the famous Janet Baker performance makes me weep.

this is not a song, it's an aria from Henry Purcell's opera "Dido and Anaeus"

@bronskilx That's the first time I've seen someone use the word "prig" outside an Enid Blyton book - and you're quite right :) I can't stand pedants.

Jeff Buckley sang it at the Meltdown years back, amazing.
Best song of the 17th century.
Sure they'll be saying the same about 'shad uppa ya face' in a few hundred years
