Given that the kids here grew up in an era where black people were overwhelming depicted negatively by various forms of media (TV, Movies and Magazines) it's not suprising to see such low self-assessment.
The rise of Sidney Poiteir, and movies such as Shaft and Superfly, was able to negate much of the negative stereotyping which showed blacks as helpless.
I also think the "flower power" and spirit of inclusiveness in the late '60s and early '70s also fostered a more positive environment.
@ 3:23 that is fascinating, because that drawing looks exactly like the face of Emmit Till after his body was pulled from the Chattahoochee River. For those that don't know, Emmit Till was a 13 year old black youth who was lynched by whites for alledgedly whistling at a white woman.

People are generally pretty ignorant of anything they have not experienced for themselves and it can be very frustrating when they don't have a true knowledge of slavery and the invlovement of white people. Many (probably most) Americans don't understand that holding negative stereotypes about a race, regardless of whether you have "a black friend", is racist. My whole life I have been surrounded by many people. Black, white, mexican. The funny thing is that I didn't lean towards a certain race and always remained around all races. positive identity and self worth are so important. Imagine going through school and not seeing positive images of black people portrayed on TV, never seeing yourselves in the history books you read in school. I'm 28 years old and I've been researching my family history for about a year and I don't know much after about 3-4 generations. The history/ancestry of black Americans has been erased and is almost impossible to find. It's hard for black parents to pass on what they don't know.

Black children in the West, will have a limited and warped view of themselves if they attach their identity to being 'black' because 'black in western culture is still a problematic presence. Blacks are the symbol and token, for racial acceptance or not, integration or not, representation or not, hostility or harmony.
Trying to ignore their 'blackness' they will struggle with themselves because in their environment they are defined as 'black', which is charged, marginalised, and ambiguous.
Where I'm from, we're all American. I notice the color of their skin; how could I not? In my experience, if I'm talking to a black person, it is up to them whether or not I will recognize them as fundamentally separate as a black person.

I think it is far better to embrace who we are and work to change perceptions of dark skin being the "other," rather than just to accept it as "problematic" and shy away from it. THe evidence is selected to support the claims of the researcher giving confirmation bias. It appears the evidence of 'no arm' people is unscientifically attached to researchers beliefs on what the student may be thinking about black people's armlessness or facelessness. while it is interesting, no claims may be justified at least from what we see.

It seems the point is that no one helped these kids with the drawings, and that the types of pictures being drawn have little to do directly with one race or culture, with the exception of the house, perhaps. I wonder how many of the kids (of either race) grew up in houses, vs. apartments. If anyone's got a link with more info and detail about these experiments, I'd love to see it. Its an amatuer one done that's on youtube. It's called "A Girl Like Me" She cites the "Clarke and Clarke" study, which is what Thurgood Marshall used as a basis to prove that Blacks in the county aren't equal due to the society we live in. Intergration wasn't the answer to the problem.

I grew up in a small city in Canada with NO other black people in my neighbourhood, other than my parents and I. I have NO difficulty understanding what this video is about. I explained why I believe the study is probably accurate above, but I'd still like to know WHOSE study it was, how many children participated, evaluation methodology, etc.

Reminds me of when I was a kid in the second grade; we had a test where you had to choose which child was dirty; the white boy or the black boy. I had to ask my friend David Kirksey (whose skin color happened to be a dark brown) what he thought the answer was. He said trust me the black kid, we both found this type of question at that age to be quite disturbing, when you have no sense of racism.

Do not compare the history of the Jewish holocaust in Germany and slavery in the West for reasons I previously stated. They had different origins, purposes, length of time, etc...
To get back to the original point, poverty is indeed a legitimate factor in the violence youths perpretrate on each other. See points 1 and 2.
Why not compare the two? Did the Jews not lose MORE peope over a Shorter time? And did not the JEWs have to struggled with less or nothing at all to make a living when they fled to other countries? Were Blacks not poor before the Civil rights movement? Were they not denied opportunites for jobs/education in the 1860's -1960's? So what happened after the Civil Rights when they did get SOME equality? They weren't killing each to same degree as they do today. Explain that one!

Given that the kids here grew up in an era where black people were overwhelming depicted negatively by various forms of media (TV, Movies and Magazines) it's not suprising to see such low self-assessment.
The rise of Sidney Poiteir, and movies such as Shaft and Superfly, was able to negate much of the negative stereotyping which showed blacks as helpless.
I also think the "flower power" and spirit of inclusiveness in the late '60s and early '70s also fostered a more positive environment.

Schools remain nearly as segregated as they were before desegregation. Most black children attend all-black schools, and districting maintains the status quo of segregated communities.
Obama doesn't change any of this.

My whole life I have been surrounded by many people. Black, white, mexican. The funny thing is that I didn't lean towards a certain race and always remained around all races. I listened to racists belittle others and always sat back and wondered how could one person have this much hate for someone else? positive identity and self worth are so important. Imagine going through school and not seeing positive images of black people portrayed on TV, never seeing yourselves in the history books you read in school. I'm 28 years old and I've been researching my family history for about a year and I don't know much after about 3-4 generations. The history/ancestry of black Americans has been erased and is almost impossible to find. It's hard for black parents to pass on what they don't know.

Black children in the West, will have a limited and warped view of themselves if they attach their identity to being 'black' because 'black in western culture is still a problematic presence. Blacks are the symbol and token, for racial acceptance or not, integration or not, representation or not, hostility or harmony.
Trying to ignore their 'blackness' they will struggle with themselves because in their environment they are defined as 'black', which is charged, marginalised, and ambiguous.

This is the kind of symbolism and rhetoric that turned me off of some kinds of postcolonial literature. I think it is far better to embrace who we are and work to change perceptions of dark skin being the "other," rather than just to accept it as "problematic" and shy away from it. Increasingly, research is showing that the less parents discuss diversity (in a positive light), the more kids will extrapolate from media, who's in the neighbourhood, and who the parents' friends are.

THe evidence is selected to support the claims of the researcher giving confirmation bias. It seems the point is that no one helped these kids with the drawings, and that the types of pictures being drawn have little to do directly with one race or culture, with the exception of the house, perhaps. I wonder how many of the kids (of either race) grew up in houses, vs. apartments. If anyone's got a link with more info and detail about these experiments, I'd love to see it. Google's not helping with this so far.

Its an amatuer one done that's on youtube. It's called "A Girl Like Me" She cites the "Clarke and Clarke" study, which is what Thurgood Marshall used as a basis to prove that Blacks in the county aren't equal due to the society we live in. Intergration wasn't the answer to the problem.

Why are you talking to me without knowing the context of these ancient comments? I am a Canadian woman of Ethiopian heritage. I grew up in a small city in Canada with NO other black people in my neighbourhood, other than my parents and I. I have NO difficulty understanding what this video is about. I explained why I believe the study is probably accurate above, but I'd still like to know WHOSE study it was, how many children participated, evaluation methodology, etc.

Unfortunetly...it hasn't. Look at the updated study done. A high school girl did a experiment with dolls. Just as Clark did in the 40s. That is what was instrumental in overturning Plessy vs Ferguson. It's called "A Girl Like Me". It's on youtube...check it out.

Reminds me of when I was a kid in the second grade; we had a test where you had to choose which child was dirty; the white boy or the black boy. I had to ask my friend David Kirksey (whose skin color happened to be a dark brown) what he thought the answer was. He said trust me the black kid, we both found this type of question at that age to be quite disturbing, when you have no sense of racism.

Whenever I saw Bil Cosby on the morning talk shows I always figured, "there goes the comedian talking about issues he has no expertise in. He should just stick to comedy". I had no idea who Bill Cosby really is. Now I'm a bit insulted by the way Family Guy portrays this guy. Like a fool who knows nothing about nothing, and completely uninformed about everything. I just found out this man, Bill Cosby, appeared around the Detroit area to bring attention to the failing and dilapidating School Systems there. He even made a few Truancy runs to confront the families of missing students (with non-health issues). He knows that his appearance won't bring immediate change, but rather awareness (which is always a start). He himself knows how tough it is out there, b'c HE was a H.S. dropout. So I say STOP HATING and start APPRECIATING and PARTICIPATING!

You will find my friend that most Jews (BUT NOT ALL) will consider themselves a universal Race of people, not mearly a Religion you choose. That's why when problems arised in Ethiopia, the Jewish people there were allowed to be airlifted to Israel and granted full citizenship. I never said Ennis Cosby was killed by a black person- I said he was a victim of Street Violence, OF WHICH black youths are largest perpetrators of. Think of it this way: If a White person's child was killed by a drunk driver whom was Black. Discovering that Whites are actually the largest perpetrators of D/D this person goes out and urges Whites to stop. A White person telling Blacks to stop D/D would not go over- no matter how meaningful, agreed? So the White guy hits up his own race. It's the same principle with Cobsy, only it's violence and he happens to be Black. Like I said, if I wasn't concerned- I could keep my mouth shut and smile.

"Help your neighbors..." is an honorable thing to do, however at the same time we must be concious of our shared history and its effect on our society, be this as uncomfortable as it may be sometimes; not to wallow in feelings of injustice and anger, but to use it as a learning tool to better help our neighbors/strangers. Though it's wrong for policians to maniplate race, Bill Cosby spoke to the problems he saw in society and it was through his comedy that people were actually willing to listen.

2. If the majority of the people in a poor neighboorhood are black, it follows that the majority of the victims, proportionally, end up being also black.
3. Jewish holocaust in Germany began with legal discrimination around 1933 to actual violence and killings between 1939 and 1945. This was a period of roughly 12 years of crimes perpretrated against mostly one generation. I think (I'm fuzzy on this) this only occurred in German occupied territory.

4. The Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade occurred over a period of 4 centuries (about 450 years). You end up with GENERATIONS not 12 years. By the time these slaves were freed, you were looking at a history that lost a lot of the culture and tradition of its original people. Finally, it was only very recently (as little as 50 years ago) that FULL rights were accorded. Let's not count the years that there was no enforcement.

Do not compare the history of the Jewish holocaust in Germany and slavery in the West for reasons I previously stated. They had different origins, purposes, length of time, etc...
To get back to the original point, poverty is indeed a legitimate factor in the violence youths perpretrate on each other. See points 1 and 2.

Why not compare the two? Did the Jews not lose MORE peope over a Shorter time? And did not the JEWs have to struggled with less or nothing at all to make a living when they fled to other countries? Were Blacks not poor before the Civil rights movement? Were they not denied opportunites for jobs/education in the 1860's -1960's? So what happened after the Civil Rights when they did get SOME equality? They weren't killing each to same degree as they do today. Explain that one!
