buddy later said he knew he was a sitting duck. cale and ruttman both slowed down about 10 laps earlier and baker went around both. but it wasnt like buddy to slow down and let someone pass, that wasnt racing so he just kept his foot in it
amazing this reminds me of 2005. i had my own apt. and every tuesday at i think 9 or 10 pm., sun sports would have nascar classics. tuesday nights i had church meeting from 7 30 to 8 30. after that i went to steak and shake drive-thru and ordered two double cheese burgers, fries and a strawberry-banana milk shake. got home and watched the old race and stuff my face lol. good times.
@Crisgo3d Correct, after the primary car got totaled they didn't have a back up so the team had to go with the Pontiac show car.It worked out pretty well for them in the end.
When I moved to FL, this channel showed the old races and I was in heaven...those were the best racing days. Todays COT cannot compare. I still watch NASCAR today but it aint the same.
Buddy Baker was a great driver. He ALWAYS seemed to be in the action, throughout whatever race he competed in. However, I NEVER saw him actually WIN a major race. Baker always seemed to end up in the top 5, but I never saw him take the checkered flag. I'm sure he did win some races, but none of them ever seemed to be televised on a major network.
Thanks for posting!!! My parents sent me to this race from Michigan when I was 15yrs old... Cale was my favorite driver (looks like my dad) and could wheel a racecar.
Thank you so much for putting this up, Crocfan. You did a good job videoing. Even if it is off the TV, it's better than not being able to see it at all.
Awesome race! Cale winning in the older Pontiac, and Bill Elliott running second in the '82 "Thunderbrick" instead of the sleeker '83 model like Baker's #21. Ruttman had a great run that day in the Levi Garrett #98 too.

Cale was one tough son of a bitch. I read a biography on him when I was really young. That book made me love NASCAR. What a character.

I read someplace this was a Hardee's show car and they brought it back to being a race car.

Thanks for the info. As I said, Buddy always seemed to be in the thick of it.

In a Pontiac LeMans which is his backup car. His primary Chevy Monte Carlo was destroyed during practice.

That '81 Lemans was one fine looking race car.
Way to go Cale!

cale owed it to the team since he destroyed their primary car during qualifying. he gave that back up pontiac quite a ride
