  • Wow, great playing! Not familiar with the song, but you sound great!

  • Amazing Job. I enjoy all of your videos. Wish we were in a band together, we like similar tastes.

  • @blackholeproductions

Thanks for watching! Maybe we could jam someday.

  • i never knew that ian paice use double bass since now...

  • may i ask you how you get that fat ´clicky´ sound out of your bassdrum? how many microphones on the bassdrum and how do you place them? also, what equalizer settings do you use on it?

a lot of questions, but i hope you can help me :P

  • @Frenzieddrummer

this recording has the bass drum reso with a port the size of a cd. Place the mic inside about an inch and point towards the beater impact point. Two mics are used when we don't have a port with the batter side 180 deg out of phase. I use no eq or processing, keep it a straight signal. Play with it after it's been recorded if you want.

  • but your "personal" Fireball.

  • @Luiginoy

but you didn't read this video description

  • @GrooveDrummin Yes! But wasn't a critic

  • Solid, steady, groovie. You cant ask more from a drummer.Btw please inform me about your snare. Its 14x6,5 but what model?

  • @McJohnGr

You put a big smile on my face :) This snare is an 8x14 - maple coliseum (LS484)

  • Groove you are by far one of the best and most skilled drummers and musicians on youtube... DO you think Double Bass is a bit overused and overratted in todays society

  • @H1GhVoL7aGe

Thank you for those kind words! Double is definitely overused. I come across many drummers who can't play my kit because there is no double pedal...I always laugh when I tell them you don't need it :)

  • @GrooveDrummin

Lovely work! Enjoyed you comment about double pedals being over used. I have been playing for nearly 30 years but I was starting to feel embarrassed by only using 1 pedal!

  • @GrooveDrummin Actually a drum set is Hi Hat - Snare - Bass drum but every drummers also use toms and other cymbales right ? I mean, yes, double pedal isn't ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY for drummers, but you can do so much cool thing with it. I'm not speaking about playing 16th note on 3000bpm, also the double isn't used only in metal, but there's so much cool groove you can do with it. With all my respect, I also think you're the grooviest drummer on Youtube. ( Sorry for bad english, I'm Belgian )

  • Lovely but the empty bits without much drums are less interesting without the music, but the fills n stuff you do suberbly

  • "I'm kinda pulling it off from memory. Hope I didn't mess it up too much" WHO CARES! This is awesome!

  • Nice work as always Dan!

And for all of you saying that Ian Paice did this with one pdeal...It's now widely known that he borrowed one of Keith Moon's bass drums when they recorded this song in the studio (The Who were recording in the room next door!) and DP also brought an extra bass drum along when they played this song live - just search for "Deep Purple - Fireball (Live)" and you will see some nice black and white footage from 1972 of Ian using two bass drums!

  • Evil kick you got there xD

  • you're so talented, how many years have u been playing for? I hope one day i can learn to play like you

  • Wow very clean!!!

  • Hey DZ, when is Ludwig comin' out with a world class, state-of-the-art , "the-shit" bass drum foot pedal? You know what I mean?

  • Kick ass!!!!!

  • hocam tebrik ederim.çok iyi kulağın var.

    saygılar

  • Real drummers use single pedals..lol..jk..nice chops bro..:)

  • Brilliant ! Thank you . Ian Paice - Fireball - Double Bass . Paice and Bonham are my heroes ! Keep up the good work .

  • SEE? Canadians ARE the best!! Great drumming too!

  • Man, can I ask you a favour? Can you tell me if you think that your Iron Cobra Rolling Glide is really good to play something like Ian Paice and John Bonham?

Thank you man, greetings from Sicily.

  • @ChrisKiffmayer

I tried the IC and it is a good pedal but you are stuck with one cam. I like the Pearl Eliminator better...more adjustments, change cam easily. I preferred the rolling glide over the power glide on the IC...smoother stroke.

BUT...foot technique is more important than the type of pedal. Technique is what will get you closer to play like our heroes.

  • @ChrisKiffmayer

    Greetings from Canada

  • @ChrisKiffmayer play bonham with double bass is a sin

  • @toolboxdam I know man... But I didn't know what to do. By the way, in these months I've increased the exercises with the single bass pedal and it's going now. But anyway you cannot play this song with a single one.

  • @tevisboe234 Ian Paice used two bass drums to play this song.

  • @ChrisKiffmayer no way only one bass drum pedal

  • @mrcatweazle1 I wouldn't be so sure... Search for "Deep Purple Fireball 1972 Europe" and tell me what you see.

  • Great drumming man!

I went to one of Paice's clinics and met him in '99. What a modest man! At the clinic he described how he tried to play fireball with one pedal. He said he could get the speed but couldn't get the power, especially maintining it through the song. The Who had been playing in the next room. He grabbed one of keith Moon's bass drums. He used one premier kick and one ludwig kick, both 22", and as they say, the rest is history!

  • Awesome...

  • hfranke07 - this is the one song that Paice used double kicks. As I understand it the Who was recording in the same studio at the time and he actually borrowed one of Keith Moon's kick drums for the song.

  • Hi! Man, your drums sound perfectly! I like that! You are a very talented drummer too. Thanks for the show, how to play this great rhythm from master drummer mr. Ian Paice! Bye, maestro! :)

  • Great playing man, sounds just like it

  • Double kick? I think he played the Ludwig Speed King pedal...... one pedal.

  • @hfranke07 two speed kings and two bass drums. (only for this song)

  • @GrooveDrummin Correct. He took the other bass drum from Keith Moon's drumset that happened to be near by.

  • @GrooveDrummin but now he plays with pearl eliminators and a bass drum...

  • @GrooveDrummin :Yeah! Ian Paice said he used 2 bass drums 'couse he was able to play the riff with one pedal, but not for all the song, so he used 2 bass drums. Now uses a double pedal.

  • Great Playing but dosen't Ian keep the double kick going all the way though? Yeah i think he does.

  • very nice =)

  • moi jdi c bon ski fé

  • Is that the ludwig classic maple snare drum 6.5x14 snare?

  • that's a ludwig classic maple 8x14 (LS494). Ludwig calls it the "colliseum"

  • (LS484)

  • you have a great sound i wonder how you make your bass drum get to sound like that i always wanted mine to sound like that

  • Great playing

  • Sounds great!

  • As a drummer, how would you compare the styles and overall ability of Ian Paice and John Bonham?

  • Your bass drum sounds pretty cool. How do you tune it and how do you mic and record it? Damn good playing by the way! Cheers!

  • Thanks, this one here has the kick tuned loose reso with 5 inch port, loose batter (ps3). No internal dampening. Mic inside pointing towards beater. No eq, no fx until mix down. Even then only a little 65hz and 6k boost and slight compression. Thanks again!

  • didnt ian paice just used only one pedal?

  • @rodolfo1673

No, this is the only song he uses double bass drum. (Think this is the only one...)

  • mAN i just discovered you

    what can i say !!!

you are awesome..already fav;d one video and sub'd and now watching the others

  • Thats awensome mate. keep on. DP (Y)

  • paice don't use duble pedal suck

  • Paice used a double base kit for Fireball

  • how else do u think he did it dummy? he used one of keith moons kicks to record the song and he now has a double pedal

  • hallo Dan... you are like a machine.. when i her you play, i always have a big smile on my face.. i love deep purple, and you Dan play the drumms so right.. keep up the good work.

  • Comments like this put a big smile on MY face! Thank you!!

  • Not bad. Constructive criticism - when you play a fill with your hands, don't drop your feet. Do something, otherwise it's almost like "dead air" underneath. your right hand is stronger and hitting harder than your left. emphasis should be on your left hand and eveness, on the snare.

  • I'm really enjoying your drumming here! And I really like the songs!

  • gr8

  • Can you swing or play jazz?

  • yes

  • wow man!!! you are great!!!! the sound is good!! Viva Mexico!!

  • Very nice job.Great choice of song.

  • I think your memory works fine ...

Somewhere I read Paice himselfelf tell that he used two pedals on the original track, simply because it sounded more powerful. I'm playing it with one pedal, it's not that fast, but it's not a good idea ... something is missing ...

  • Inspiring :)) I think I'll buy the Iron Cobra Rolling Glide.

  • Thank you...Try the Pearl Eliminator before you buy the IC. I traded my IC for the Pearl and like it better.

  • sweet...your pretty good. I went to an Ian Paice Drumclinic, and asked him bout this intro....He showed us, how he played it, WITH ONE BASSDRUM PEDAL! He's insanely good....but with 2 its also a pretty clean job....way to go..

  • Thanks....that's wicked !!

  • @philhoelke

He used TWO BASS DRUMS he borrowed one from Keith Moon just for this song.... read the biography

  • @H1GhVoL7aGe

yes that's true - he used two pedals in the studio, but not live!

  • it's awesome!and it's really great sound

  • I love you!!! you are Amazing!! I love you!!

  • You wrong: during all the song he use Ride and the two pedals... He doesn't use the Charleston... :-)

  • yes, that's correct...i wasn't aware of that until after I made the vid. I haven't heard the song for at least 10 years.

  • You are right, on the record he used two drums. He admitted this on a drum clinic I attended.

  • What an genius Ian Paice is: makes the people believe its two drums with the foot.

  • Yes, for sure, a genius... but he does use two bass drums specifically for this song.

  • This is what I call skill!!!

  • very good!

    nice snare technique!

  • Like your style matey !

  • I used to manage the Drum dept at Manchester PMT. They're are are expensive but well worth the money the Iron Cobra's. You cetainly do them justice, nice clean, confident style ! Great !

  • by far one of the best drummers on youtube!

  • super play man! you are really good!

  • Hey you're really good! Keep it up!

  • hmmmmm

  • wow...you rock...:)

  • I love the way your timing isn't like a click track as Paice's was. The constant fluctuation brings the mood of the drummer out.

  • Good point. Ian Paice in rock drumming was and is so on-point that it's almost obscene, no matter what he was doing

  • My son is just starting on the drums - this film is a great inspiration to him. Thanks for posting it.

  • No words can describe the absolute awesomeness that is your playing. Brilliant genius is probably the closest description of your skill. Amazing.

  • Wow, thanks for your kind comments. I really appreciate it!!! Thank you!

  • Hi, This is fantastic, it really swings! Your other videos are great too. Sensational playing...

  • dude thats very good!! but like John Bonham, Nico Mcbrain...ian Paice also uses a single bass drum!!!!!, ohhh by the way..Ludwig speed king!!!

  • Thanks. Yes, they all use single kick but Paice had his roadies bring in a second bass drum exclusively for this tune...and the speed king is a great pedal but try out a new Pearl Eliminator, much better pedal.

  • Thanks. Yes, they all use single kick but Paice had his roadies bring in a second bass drum exclusively for this tune...

I only found this out when I got scandanavian nites a few years ago. The cheating bastard! - no probs it just meant my BD was not as slow as I thought!

  • wow brilliant drummer

  • DZ, your stuff is FANTASTIC! I've been playing about 4 years longer than you, but I'm not even in your league! Wish I lived near you, I'd pay you for lessons!

Easy for people to criticize & say do this, dont do that, etc, but I think you're right up there with the greats... Buddy, Neil, Aldridge, Ian, Torpey, & the likes. The only diff is, you're not as famous! :)

Your chops are world class, dude! Guess I'm gonna have to suscribe to your channel! Keep up the awesome vids, bro!

  • Thank you, Thank you! I am truely honoured to hear your kind comments. Hopefully, I can get more recognition through YouTube...it is very exciting to hear all the positive comments from everyone. I have always been about the music and not the fame or fortune. Actually, I turned down many bands because they did not do it for the music but other things like, girls, money, etc.

  • very good

  • This video has 12x14 but I prefer my 10x13 for a rack tom.

  • what are the tom-tom dimensions on your kit?

  • rawr

  • Great playing dude, and awesome kit / drum sound / mix / everything!

Are you leading with your left foot and playing the off beats with your right?

That's the way I play this song too.

  • Thank you! Yes, that is the way I'm playing it. Thanks again.

  • Dig it!

  • Of course he didn't! :-) He used a double bass setup live - check youtube

  • Not quite right but a damn fine job. The very first figure is a tom tom triplet. also aren't you cheating a bit by using a double pedal. I believe Ian did on a single pedal.

  • wow

  • Good work.

  • Nice sounds

  • sos muy groso.

los mejores bateristas de todos los tiempos por su gran trayectoris e historias con sus bandas son: JOHN BONHAM Y IAN PAICE.

  • cool kit and cymbals!

    keep rockin´

    Francisco- Lima-Peru

  • nice! the first couple measures of the intro are wrong, its only the second half. other than that its comepletely perfect.

  • I've got the Iron Cobra too it's so amazing. it's my first double bass pedal and i'm so glad to have it.

    very good drumming btw.

  • very and really good.you rock.

  • im waiting u to play burn cover from deep purple.

  • no one can do it like Ian. He did it with a single pedal. Insane!

  • Ian used two bass drums on the album for this one but would have the second kick removed right afterwards.

  • double pedal is cheating haha he originally did it with a single pedal! not that i cn do it like lol

  • Actually, Mr. Paice's roadies would bring the second bass drum on stage for this particular song.

  • On the recording he actually used one of keith moons bass drums. he could just get the speed with a single but he couldn't get the intesity

  • no ,he used 2 bass drums ,watch the dvd live in Denmark 1972.

  • spot on

    watch?v=tbYj71g1QQQ&feature=related

  • ye he used two bass drums to get the power but originally he used a single bass drum n then on the actual recording he use two

  • Ian Paice used one of Keith Moon's bass drums when they were recording this in the studio, alongside his own kit, as The Who were recording at the same studio!

  • 5 Star'd, was good. Would have been better if you'd put a Fireball track with no drums over the top of it.

  • Hey, yeah! Really nice drumming. But the mix sucks ass: can't hear ride and china at all.

  • I like your tune!!!!!!!

  • hey great job man

    really nice

  • Also, the only other Purple song with double bass is "Hey Cisco", off the 1996 album "Purpendicular", with Steve Morse on guitar. The album itself is a beautiful piece of work from start to finish, with every track being unique and exciting. Same goes for the follow-up, "Abandon". The two successive albums after that, "Bannanas", and "Rapture Of The Deep", didn't fare as well, possibly because Jon Lord dropped out, and was replaced by Don Airey.

  • If I'm not mistaken, on the record Paice maintains the beat on the bell of his ride cymbal, and maintains the double bass pattern throughout the song, not switching to hi-hat and single pedal during the verse part, as you're doing. Am I wrong? I've been listening to their music for 35 years now.

  • Yes, half right. I got around to listening to the album aftr a few years and the ride remains the same but the double kick has a different pattern, still double kick, but not steady 8th notes. I did neither in this take but the single kick I did had the same feel. This was a spur of the moment kind of thing...trying out the new Iron Cobra. I will probably redo it for accuracy.

  • man, you have THE sexiest sounding kit ever!

  • correct...thanks

  • great passage at 0:33 and 0:34

So the intro of Fireball has been done with double bass drums but not all the song?

  • and where the guitar solo is their is double bass

  • Wow! I enjoyed that!

  • I think I read the interview on drummerworld but Paice has definitely said that when they recorded the intro he borrowed a bass drum from the next door studio - so it is two bass drums on the record - and the bass drum belonged to Mr K Moon.

  • That's right.

  • Thanks for the tip.

  • Hey, I noticed when you go double pedal, you don't bridge? You should look into bridging.

  • Never heard of it before. Please explain.

  • Bridging- It's when you place your foot in between your bass pedal and your hi-hat pedal.

Therefore causing your hi-hat to keep time while your shredding your doubles.

If you don't understand I can try to explain a little better. :)

Btw big fan :) Keep up the god work :)

  • Oh Yeah, I know what you mean now. I haven't done that in a while :)

  • I'm telling you...It's a good habit to get into!

  • Great job, i just got the Iron Cobra pedals myself and they're awesome.

  • double pedal is good for this, well done, but alot of improv :P even if it isnt fun to copy it perfectly, i took the time to.

  • Thanks, Deep Purple's middle name was improv. Get a copy of Purple's DVD "Scandinavian Nights". You'll see a roadie bring out a second bass drum and you tell me if this live version of Fireball is the same as the album ;) Killer DVD btw...

  • i don't use a double pedal for this song. do you think it's necessary use double pedal or i can play this song with single pedal?

  • If it sounds right it's not necessary but those are 16th notes and you may find it easier to use a double pedal.

  • how the hell do you do that? two bass drums right?

  • you make it look so easy....how you get so good?

  • practice, practice, practice...which I haven't done much of lately.

  • ha sounds like a pretty logical way to do,my only obstacle is getting a set to practice on

  • Yeah, get some sticks and practice on a phone book, the rebound is close to that of a drum. That's what I used to do when we were on the road and couldn't practice on my kit.

  • ha alright,thanks man

  • well done

  • Thanks

  • nice i have the iron cobra power glide :D! i love deep purple too good job!

  • The IC is definately the best pedal I've had. Thank you!

  • UPDATE: I traded in my IC for the Pearl Eliminator and there is no looking back. I strongly advise trying one!!
