Yeah, it has always really bugged me that people actually think that the conscious awareness of something can change something, as if you can just mentally control the matter in the universe by observing it, when in fact it is because you must interact with your environment to make an observation! :-)
The initial idea was the interference pattern you get in a double slit experiment that can be disturbed by being observed, but also whatever could be considered a particle target for the elusive Higgs boson.
