If you buy the black expanded foam you don't have to put black silicone on the back, it's a little more pricy but it come in bigger cans and kills to birds with one stone
@sexiilicous1 I used one whole can of foam for the background but started to run out near the end. I would say it's probably best to use the silicone to hold w/e you place on the background (I just did what many others did in their build logs which is to use silicone). My tank is a 18x18x24. No this can not be removed but if you want a removable one i believe many people use egg crate (I think that's what its called)
