wow if that rubber fails going down the road and it grabs that shaft, your transfer case is gonna blow,i had that happen with the electronic system on a exploder.it tried to engage it and it bombed the transfer case.
Anyone know of a good video on how to tear this iwe system apart at the wheel and replace it so I can get my 4x4 working again, I've never been so frustrated with a vehicle as I have been with my piece of shit 2004 F150 FX4, if I can't find a good video on how to fix it I may just light it on fire and collect the insurance money lol
@burnedchicken2, That's what is happening to my 04 as I type. I'm not even through paying for my truck yet and to put icing on the cake I'm being laid off of my job. No funds to fix my 200+$ problem.
TERRIBLE design - my 2006 f150 has had the iwe solenoid replaced twice. When it fails, the front drivetrain gets spun by the wheels. I drove a couple thousand miles w/o knowing it had failed. This destroyed the transfer case and hubs. (truck has less than 50k miles). This system should fail to 2wd drive, not to locked! I've had many other problems, and very poor service. I will NEVER buy another ford truck.
Vacuum is not the way to go for a 4x4 system, leak and will not work.Ford's 4x4 systems are expensive to fix and complicated.GM's system is simple and easy to fix.Just had a customer take his 2006 Ford to the dealer for the 4x4 system problem, computer took a dump
what they don't tell you is moisture can migrate down that vacuum line and corrode the inside of that diaphragm...and prevent the locking collar from working properly. That amounts to grinding the heck out of your wheel hub.....
ford has never even apologized for their defective 97-2008 triton engines which can blow sparkplugs out the engine and catch vehicle on fire, a major loss of money !!!
this isnt a new idea, its just better than the old lockers. It makes sence to free up the front tires. especially in the winter, you will have more traction on the front end.
i had my ball joints change on my 2006 ford f150 fx4 and on the left side i can hear a ping type of noise can it be that the locking power is no good ????/
i had a Toyota with a ford motor 302 v-8. piece of shit couldn't hold up to the power. twisted drive shafts, blew rear ends and transmissions best part about was the FORD MOTOR!
@FRDMAN27 if ur Toyota had a ford 302 V8 in it it wasn't stock. Thus parts weren't 100% compatible but cobbled together to create a fit. The Ford 302 motor was a good motor but was not made for the Toyota. Im guessing it was an old school tundra which was a 9/10 compared to a full size and was not made to have a 302 in or it was a Tacoma go figure why you did what you did. Lastly "Twisted Drive Shaft" how many burnouts, dumping the clutch you do its pretty easy to twist a drive shaft that way.
SO fitz, you have tracked down a total of 15,620 known vehicles that were repaired due to recalls/issues. That is out of roughly 400,000 current model Tundras that have been produced. A recall rate of 4 recalled vehicles per 100 vehicles produced.
That my friend is an incredibly good number, and yes that would indicate reliability, thank you for proving my point. Let's take a look at Ford's recalls on the 2004-2008 F150.
DETROIT, May 29 (Reuters) - A glitch in Toyota Motor Corp.'s Tundra pickup truck has caused 20 engine failures and forced it to track down other trucks at risk for the problem, the Japanese automaker said on Tuesday.
Toyota said a flaw in the camshaft in a limited number of 5.7-liter, V-8 engines installed in early versions of the Tundra has caused the engine component to crack and fail.
DETROIT (Reuters) -- December 14, 2007 -- Toyota Motor Corp said on Friday that it is recalling 15,600 Tundra pickup trucks in the United States because a rear propeller shaft may separate at the joint.
Fitz, you are wrong once again. Ford actually has the largest recall in automotive history, it's not even close. Their recall for the cruise control switches absolutely obliterates any other recalls in the history of automobiles. That recall covers over 10,000,000 vehicles. I find it funny that you think Toyota has had a recall larger than that... no one has even come as close to being that bad!
"But what is the excuse for the worlds greatest auto maker to have recalls period?"
So you are saying that Toyota shouldn't recall any vehicles ever!? How stupid are you? I just proved that the Tundra has a recall rate that is nearly 1/10 that of the F150 and you respond with... well, they shouldn't have any recalls at all!
"Fords are suppose to be "junk", right? so you would expect them to be recalled."
I am not following your arguments... does this mean you agree with me? The fact is that the current model Tundra's recall rate per 100 vehicles was nearly 1/10th of that of the F150's. That sir proves my point, you have ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to argue against that. You have been wrong in nearly every post on here and your arguments are that of a 5th graders.
You don't understand sarcasm i guess? Also you were wrong when you said earlier that 2008 f150 was the same as the 2009. the 2009 was completely redesigned. The recall was for Toyota as a whole, not just the Tundra.
It's funny that you call my arguments that of a 5th grader, but it's the younger people that prefer imports and pretty much hate American culture. Most of the people i see driving Tundra's are non English speaking immigrants. Not being racist, but that's what i see.
Fitz, when did I ever say the 2008 and 2009 F150's were the same truck? I never once said that. What recall are you talking about? Toyota did not have a brand wide recall covering all their vehicles, that is completely asinine. It is common knowledge that Ford has the largest recall ever in the history of automobiles, it is also common knowledge that the Tundra has a lower recall rate than the F150.
As for your last comment regarding Tundra ownership, you once again showed your ignorance.
The F150 has the least HP per L, the worst fuel economy per L and has lower quality/reliability ratings. It appears to me that all the efforts put into this 4wd system were incredibly wasteful.
wikiwikiwildwest.....Post a link to where it says F150 has lower quality/reliability ratings. 1997-present ford has 1 of the best quality/reliability ratings of the big 3.
wikiwikiwildwest..The 2009 f150 is a new truck that will be higher in quality and reliability than Chevy or Dodge and will match Toyota. The 2009 fusion is tied with camry in Overall Initial Quality 5 stars. And Accord only got 3 and a half. Looks like toyota and honda are the ones who are slipping.
Is that according to you fitz? Because JD Power has not rated the 2009 vehicles yet. Furthermore, how exactly will the F150 beat the perfect score that both the Tundra and Silverado achieved when absolutely nothing has changed on these vehicles from 2008 to 2009?
wikiwikiwildwest..Quality ratings are different for different models...the f350 has a better rating than the f150, but the f350 has a higher rating than chevys 3500 HD pickup. Ford is still improving it's lineup, The fusion hybrid is already being talked about by atuo experts, as being better than anything coming out by GM and toyota.
The Ford Superduty's received 2 stars out of 5, they received the worst ratings of all the trucks rated by JD Power. Where are you getting your info from fitz, clearly not from the JD Power website?
Additionaly how is Toyota "slipping" when in the two instances you provided you clearly stated that both Toyota vehicles received the highest possible rating?
wikiwikiwildwest..I was talking the 2009 FUSION, the 2009 model is listed at jp as well as the 2009 ACCORD and CAMRY. So if the accord gets only 3 1/2 stars, The fusion is tied with Toyota in quality. Look it up, it's fact.
I believe Toyota and Honda are very overrated in reliability, and cost more to repair. I have a 1995 f150 with 450,000 work miles on it. No Toyota will last that long, unless you just commute back and forth to work. But when you abused them, they will fall apart.
I realize the Fuzion is listed... but this board is not about midsize vehicles. It is about large trucks, and JD Power has not rated large trucks for 2009, that is also a fact, and one much more applicable to this discussion.
That's great that you have an F150 with an odometer that says 450,000 miles. How many things have been rebuilt on your truck?
Please, answer my question regarding your comments on Toyota "slipping" in quality (1/2 ton trucks... remember).
wikiwikiwildwest..I've rebuilt nothing on my truck, same motor and same tranny. Maybe i'm looking at wrong year. But if toyota is so great what with all of recalls on the tundra. Remember according to toyota fans fords are suppose to be junk, so why the recall on the tundra a "superior built truck"?
really all the electronic/vacuum disconnects no matter the manufacturer have proven to be unreliable at times, as well as the unit bearing which has proven to be more troublesome than the old style opposing tapered bearing system, and manual hub lockouts. i'd rather have to get out of my truck and lock the hubs and pull a stick to put in in 4x4 and know its going in/out of 4x4 than any pushbutton/knob. i'll stick to my real truck thankyou
my 99 ranger has a vaccum system, It is such a good system. Until it leaks, partially engages 4x4, and chews off the splines when the hubs disengage under load due to the leak. I was so pleased, I took off the vaccum hubs and replaced them with aftermarket manuals. Can you sense the sarcasim.
I work at a ford dealer for a co-op, i've already had 3 different trucks with the same problem. The solonoids fail, the hubs seize up if you don't use them like once a month. Its a good design, but its not good if you don't use it.
why don't you check out my Video of me offroading my 2004+ F-150. I've replaced 2 IWE hubs, one happened that day, it's an okay design and is very simple to understand, but oftentimes you will have an IWE solenoid failure, blown fuse, vacuum leak etc. and the IWE's will lock, this causes your hub to fail on the street and you may not realize until you take it offroad.
wow, thats a vacum gun and its a vaccum diaphram. its very simple and very cheap technology. old and proven but used in a new way. if it breaks its just a matter of replacing some rubber. i dont know how ford does it. the things they come up with make me scratch my head sometimes. its just wierd.
He said it perfectly, "It's a more expensive way to build it" So when it breaks they can get more money from you. I have been looking at these cardatavideos and wonder why they only compare to Chevy in a select few categories???? Probably because they know chevy is better.
P.S. I love how only two people in the audience drive 4X4's such a great group of critics
