  • You are really closed-minded. If Glee brought some people here, it isn't a crime. I think that so many people are so proud to know Broadway without Glee. Personly, I know this song before Glee but I accept and respect the people that discover Patti Lu Pone by Glee !

  • C'mon, guys. Does it really matter if Glee brings people here? I mean, at least they're here, right? Obviously, the Glee version of this song isn't as good as the Lupone version or the Merman version or the Bernadette Peters version, but it doesn't have to be. Just enjoy the glory that is Ms. Patti Lupone.

  • Disappointing to see how many people come from Glee...

I grew up to this musical. Shut up.

  • @iSingTheChanges Well I didn't so I think it's a wonderful thing that a show like Glee can educate teenage kids who lack musical culture these days and who listen to nothing else but Gaga and Bieber

  • @iSingTheChanges Glee is a freaking nightmare.

  • Kurt whipped <3

  • I am sorry to say.... Every time I hear Ms Lupone sing a song after I hear Bernadette Peter's version, I can't help but feel just a little bit disappointed :\ This entire thing just seems like she is saying "I am performing now."

I don't know what it is! I just NEVER enjoy Patti's performances... and its not for lack of trying... believe me!

  • what's up with that comment about glee getting 200 plus thumbs up? wanna hear somethin' worth that many thumbs up? PATTI LUPONE STANDS FOR BROADWAY.

  • @ariaaspromised neh, this comment doesn't desrve lots of thums up. Don't be so pretentious.

  • @phylosaccount don't be such a downer!

  • @phylosaccount I think it's great that a show like Glee brought such wonderful musical pieces to the mainstream culture,it introduced kids and teenagers of our generation to something other than Bieber and Gaga and I think that's great, they're doing a marvelous job...that's why many thumbs up for Glee :)

  • Born to sing this role

  • Thumbs up if you aren't here for Glee -.-

  • Dream: Have a Tony Award presented to me by Patti Ann LuPone. ^_^

  • Funny... This and the stars of Wicked introduced me to Glee, not opposite-wise... [: Chris Colfer did do a good redention of this song, though. ^.^

  • @IDontShine423 same here. I had Wicked Gregory Maguire wrote and then I saw the musical for my birthday. Then I heard that Kristen Chenowith and Idina Menzel appeared on Glee and I was hooked!

  • @IDontShine423 Who is chris colfer?

  • @JonesChaplin91203 The gay kid- Kurt- from Glee?

  • Chris Colfer did a really great cover of this

  • I just adore Patti LuPone, because of Glee xD

  • I love this version alot better than Bette's version!

  • I have just managed in the last ten minutes to fall head over heels in love with Patti Lupone! Her voice is amazing!

  • Chris Colfer's rendition is much better in my opinion! :D

  • @jammyjamjamjam1 i agree in terms that i looooove chris' voice, but patti lupone will always own this song. <3

  • @jammyjamjamjam1 but its way different so you cant really compare them on which ones better

  • Both the Chris Colfer version and the Patti Lupone version are lovely. Alright, it's settled.

  • @tuwbrjj Listen, I know it's a matter of taste, but how the hell can you compare them? T__T I mean, I know Chris Colfer is really talented and he's got a great future in front of him, but hell, this is Patti LuPone. 30 years on Broadway. Chris Colfer is incredibly talented, and a good performer, but he's just a kid at last...he ain't got her experience, her magic...he will have it, I don't deny it, but you can't make a comparison between him and this pillar of the entertainment world!

  • i watched all the other versions of some people trying to find one that was as good as chris colfer's.....this was the best besides his....but it's still not as good....

  • so, no idiot motherfulker trashtalkers here, just 2 performers who know what they're talking about, and you just seem like an irascible person who wants to get into something theyre not a part of.

    P.S. You spelled disappear wrong

  • @Mercury0204 @Rachster86, I agree with Rachster86, i didn't mean for it to sound so terrible and slang(was a bad day), i actually do apologize, but me being a performer myself I was qualified to at least share my opinion and my witness of what I have heard personally(Rachster may be right about live performances, I sadly haven't seen one) but regardless, YOU Mercury0204 obvi have no idea what your saying. We never said we could sing better, and as a matter of fact, i was DEFENDING the video

  • @LeShawnasBiggestFan I totally get it. I've had bad days as well. :-) You do have every right saying your opinion and I do honor everyone's opinion. For the record, when I was responding to you, I was just stating that you didn't know all the facts about me to formulate a full opinion which is why I responded in the way that I did. I hope I didn't offend you and that there are no hard feelings on your side. I know there aren't on my end. Hope you have many more good days than bad in the future.

  • @mercury0204 I am on youtube, I'm not talking trash, and I'm not an idiot. I was just saying my opinion as a performer myself and as an audience member when I was lashed at. Excuse me for defending myself. I wasn't trying to say that I am better then anyone else as a person on here. I'm not. I just said to Leshawnasbiggestfan that they were wrong about me.I do know what I'm talking about and I do have an opinion. If you actually got to know me, then you would know I'm actually a nice person.

  • @LeShawnasBiggestFan, 5. I'm no one but me. I didn't say my opinion to be mean or to make you think I'm a bitch. I'm not. I was just stating that if you are a professional singer/performer, you shouldn't be going out of tune period. I don't care who it is. I would say this about anyone. 6. You clearly don't know what you are talking about because it's not just when she starts it's the entire note and I've heard her sing live when she has done complete phrases out of tune. Hence my opinion.

  • @Rachster86 @LeShawnasBiggestFan lol both of you idiots post a video of yourselves singing and let's see who's better. Shut the motherfuck up. trash like you people on youtube should dissapear

  • @LeShawnasBiggestFan, you are so funny starting a fight with me on here. Here is where your logic is flawed. 1. I've been singing/training my entire life with professionals. 2. I'm a professional singer/performer myself. 3. I'm a professional voice teacher and have been teaching for over 9+ years. 4. My specialty in singing myself and in teaching my students is singing with a mix that sounds like a belt. So the fact that you think I don't know what I'm talking about is laughable.

  • She goes out of tune on all the long big notes in almost every song. It's soo annoying. She's a great actress and performer but come on people! If you go out of tune at all then you don't deserve to be on Broadway in a musical. Just because she has a big voice doesn't mean she is a good singer. Good singers can always control their voices to at least stay in tune. She has proven time and time again that she can't. Sorry but singing out of tune is one of my all times pet peeves.

  • @Rachster86 Bitch, back the fuck up. Who do you think you are calling out Patti LuPone? You try and do belts like that, ive been singing all my life and I know what I'm talking about. Her crescendo is spot on, her vibrato is impeccable, and her belt is fantastic. You obviously don't know the deeper part of singing, just that you hear she starts a half step below some of her big notes. Take your pet peeve outside, and put a leash on it so it doesn't bite anyone else in the ass

  • @Rachster86 Yeah actually I agree- I prefer the Glee version of this- and the Glee version of I Dreamed A Dream from Les Miserables- but her voice is kinda ok

  • Whoa, Just saw Kurt sing this on Glee. What a fantastic song! I love it!

  • Like this if Glee brought you here.

  • I can't wait for Kurt to sing this...I just realized how many songs he sings that are sung by Patti LuPone.

  • @AnimeVampire1324 Yes, but his solos are the best. Broadway songs are perfect for him.

  • @carol3793 Completely in agreement with you:)

  • @AnimeVampire1324 I want to hear some "Sweeny Todd" on Glee!

  • @AnimeVampire1324 Well it's Kurt's favorite artist :) and YES Glee brought me here

  • omg Lupone you suck....if I want a dude singing , I'll find a dude

  • @LearningPatchPal

What are you talking about? "Dude?" She is an Alto belt, sounds nothing like a man.

She just was not all that great as Rose is all.

Best way to make a gal feel like shit- tell her she is a dude.

    Nice going jackass.

  • Good voice!

  • This woman sounds totally retarded. I am laughing my ass off listening to this. She is as subtle as a tsunami. All I hear is The Patti LuPone Show starring Gypsy. I do not hear Rose at all. I can actually hear the click, click, click of the wheels turning in her head as she sings this. And for those of you who say you had to see her live...I did. Both at City Center and on Broadway because my dear friend played Tulsa in both productions. She is awful. Period. Bernadette needs to mentor her.

  • @KellyBevel you sound absolutely stupid, kid. If you don't at least respect LuPone, you clearly have no training or respect for the theatre. How dare you? I love Bernadette too, but she surely doesn't need others to put Patti down just to bring her up. Both are legends of the stage.

  • @RebbieFan

Oh for gods sake, put a sock in it.

    "How dare You?"

Is LuPone your mother or something?

  • @ugha323a What are you upset she got all the good parts cuz her belt is stronger than yours? Mind your business & happy new year.

  • @ugha323a TY Dear, thats my hubby

    :)

  • @RebbieFan

You have not seen me perform, sir/maam.

I challenge ANY of these to go do the Forrest Theatre in Carmel Ca.

It is a 1500 seater that is OUTSIDE in 57 degrees with fog, which is where I played Annie Oakley, also where Judith Anderson, the best Medea ever played, and an array of huge talents that we will never find again.

I simply critiqued Ms LuPone. I gave her appropriate comments. I didnt 'compare', you did.

whats the matter? Cant take someones critique that is accurate?

  • @ugha323a Alright alright, I guess that was a cheap shot. I'm a performer as well & I know better. I just didn't like the whole "put a sock in it" like I don't have a right to speak thing. What can I say? I'm a LuPone lover. Meanwhile, the videos of you singing are actually wonderful.

  • @RebbieFan

Thank you and now I will watch you as well.

I DO like LuPone, I loved her when I saw her in EVITA as a kid, growing up in NY.

My grandmother got really super sick in the late 80's and I accepted a part at the St James theatre for the role of Vera in MAME, and had to turn it down, because family always came first. Now, I am in my 40's and voice very strong.

I also got accepted at ACT in S.F. for scholarship, but that was at the same time as massive sickness came to my Nana.

  • @KellyBevel

The audience at the Encores production at City Center was ridiculous... during "Small World," the audience was practically not even letting her get through a line without laughing. She hardly had to do anything. It was "let's sit down and watch Patti LuPone play Patti LuPone doing Rose." Totally ridiculous. I'd much rather have watched her actually try and play a character instead of a caricature of herself as Rose.

  • @rlee1976

I am not a fan of LuPones because of what you just said.

She was EXCELLENT in Evita, though. I was young when I saw it, but she was great.

Too much of a big head now.

  • @ugha323a

I totally lost respect for her when her comment to the crew telling her to hurry up during her Tony acceptance speech was "Oh, shutup, it's been 29 years!" Ok, I get it Patti, you were in a bunch of shows since Evita. But so were many legends in the generations before her time. And not one of them were so bitter as to act as if they are entitled to the award in some way or other because of the length of time and amount of shows they were nominated for in between awards.

  • @rlee1976

All of the other Tony Award winners acted GRACEFULLY, this one lacks grace, pinache, and poise.

Merman, Goulet, hell, the list goes on and on of the talent that is SO lacking today. Being humble makes a star charming.

NOBODY is 'entiltled' to anything-we are Americans and WORK for accolades and should act accordingly, even with humility when receiving 1.

I have won many theatrical awards, you can visit my page:) I quit for my Nana, she was very sick for 11 yrs, & needed me :).

  • @rlee1976

she was joking, everyone laughed. It was charming when she said it's been 29 years. Get over it.

  • @rlee1976

yeah, that's the mark of a bad performance alright. I hate it when an audience laughs at all my laugh lines. I heard they gave her standing ovations every night and kept it up for 20 minutes on closing night. Oh yeah, and all those tears during the lead up to "Everything's coming Up Roses"..... jeez, ouch that hurts. She must have really sucked.

  • @KellyBevel

BTW tell your friend I loved him as Tulsa. And he's super-cute too!

  • @rlee1976

The "Tulsas" are always super cute, and super.....uh....happy ;)

I played Tessie Tura in 1988 in NY. It was fun.

  • @KellyBevel

    I agree 100%.

Nothing like Ethel Merman, Daly, or Liza as well.

I saw her in Evita, she was a standing ovation, but this one, she thinks she IS "Broadway", This show was written for Merman, NOT LuPone, she has too much of a BIG FAT HEAD now.

Sad.. when that happens to thespians.

  • @ugha323a

Hmmm, interesting. The man who wrote the show had nice things to say about all the women who did the part, but his opinion was the Merman couldn't act and when he wrote about directing Patti Lupone in the show, half his book was a huge valentine to her. She was clearly his favorite actress for that role.

Ps.. his name is Arthur Laurents, buy his book and eat your heart out.

  • @teeseLW

When you have a voice like Merman, who had plays written for her voice, its far more important that being a weak actor. The song is the center of attraction in a Broadway play. The story line is filler.

  • @TheWWWJTFORG that's not how it is anymore. book comes first, songs come second. but take that knowledge 100 years in the past to ziegfeld and you'll be right!

  • @TheWWWJTFORG Well that's one (weak) definition of what defines the appeal of a Broadway show. The story is, to a certain extent, filler. But if you can't deliver song's convincingly, if all you can do is belt out songs with the emotional sensitivity of a sledgehammer, well then maybe you should just be singing at a cabaret, instead of being on Broadway.

  • she needs to be more animated her speaking is kind of boring and when she holds out her notes and her vibrato shows she like changes keys or something and that drives me CRAZY like listen to this 0:34 !!!

  • i like her vibrato but Bernadette peters is still my favorite

  • Neither did Merman!!!She lost to Mary Martin for SOM

  • Merman did not win either! She lost to Mary Martin for Sound of Music...She ws overheard in the audience saying "ya can't buck a nun!"

  • awesome performance. I personally like Judy Garlands version the best

  • doesn't beat bette's version

  • Patti..I luv you!! You are the best!! You got it going on, girl. None like the Patti!!

  • Patti....I luv you. You are the best!! You got it going on, girl. None like the Patti!!

  • This has to be one of my favorite songs -- sung by one of the best. Ok, the best. Thanks for posting this video.

  • When she sings "Goodbye to blueberry pie..." I love her. No one shall compare.

  • i seem to have missed bette midler so she would be number 4 and the rest move down one.

  • @ricmarc what about Liza??

  • she never played the role.

  • plus you really need a voice for this

    have you heard Liza recently?

she sounds like Daffy Duck on speed

  • @grai LMAO

  • Great voice!!

this is like the 60´s when you hear a beautiful record!!

I´m hearing this tune and boy I like it!!!!

  • ITS TRUE the actual recording is high quality some how

    better than others

  • 1. pattie 2 tyne 3 angela 4 ethel 5 bernadette 6 the mish mash from the movie

    patti is the best rose

  • I totally agree... I dont honestly think Ethel Mermans voice was right for this role, and Bernadette was really really bad... which is sad cause shes my favoirte Broadway diva

  • @Evilqueen1985 Actually, the score (and indeed the entire show) was written specifically *FOR* Ethel Merman!!! As for Bernadette Peters, did you know that Arthur Laurents HIMSELF was a huge fan of Bernadette's performance as Rose? (despite not liking many of Sam Mendes' directorial choices).

I've seen both Patti and Bernadette on Broadway, and Bernadette's Rose was infinitely more sympathetic; she was indomitable AND vulnerable simultaneously.

  • @Rapture1987

Exactly, Queen, this IS Mermans show, although everyone now will tell you that Merman was loud and obnoxious, I think she was FABULOUS and I love to imitate her :D

  • @ugha323a I totally agree. It's Ethel Merman who paved the way for belters in Musical Theatre (that includes Patti LuPone, needless to say!!) Merman provided an alternative to the Soprano Ingenue leads, and proved that "brash" Belters could carry shows as the Female Lead too (no one would have believed it, at the time).

  • See my page!

    Hell YEAH!

Merman IS the champ and queen of Broadway and will ALWAYS be.

I played Annie Oakley, and the director asked me to copy Merman as much as possible, because that is all anyone remembers.

So, why TRY to follow who did it best?

NOBODY alive can out belt Merman with sounding BIG, Bold and fantastique!

She WAS Broaday, and people that are female/belting thespians now, ought to THANK GOD that she even existed, if it wasnt for her, these foamdomes would NOT exist!

  • I love Patti Lupone she's always so energetic. =D

  • Patti LuPone won a Tony for her performance as Madame Rose. So did Tyne Daly. So did Angela Lansbury. But Bernadette Peters did not win a Tony for her performance. Enough said.

  • Who cares? At least she was nominated.

  • Neither did Ethel Merman. What do you say about that?

  • totally with you on that, BUT 2003 was also the year of Hairspray... that show stole everything.

  • @jimthewriter have you learned anything about the Tony's through the years, ESPECIALLY this past years? Enough said.

  • @jimthewriter

Yeah, Bernadette Peters as Rose? Were they joking or what?

Ethel Mermen, imo, did this sing better than anyone ever.

I LUV Tyne too, she had a great character in REAL life, I met her.

Angela Lansbury can act all of them straight off the stage.

  • @jimthewriter Thought that I was the only one who thought the same thing.

  • A brilliant performance. Patti LuPone is a legendary Rose.

  • If I wanted to sing 16 bars of this song, about how long (minutes-wise), would that be?

  • Ud have to find out. its 16 four counts. Just count to 4 16 times. Like 1 and a half minutes thats usually where i cut it. Anywhere between 1-1.5 min is good.

  • she is so amazing

  • Patti LuPone is Broadway Legend. Sooo....amazing. I absolutely love her as Mrs. Lovett in "Sweeney Todd in Concert," and her Evita is simply brilliant.

  • I'm all about Bette Midler in the movie. Tho Pati is certainly awesome.

  • I saw it closing night on my birthday....unbelievable.

  • saw this play and shes abosolutly amazing!!!!

  • i just saw it omg it rocks!!!!!!!!!!

  • She does not yell. She sings awesome.

  • personally, i don't like this version.. i think bette midler is waaaay better!! she gives mor emotion. and patti yells.

  • Okay, for starters Bernadette Peters production of Gypsy was NOT a commercial or critical flop! Bernadette's production ran 1 year and I month, Patti's will run a little under a year. If Patti's was more successful, it would not be closing a month sooner than Bern's did. Plus, Bern got rave reviews from USA Today, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Playbill, the list goes on and on. She got a standing ovation at the Tonys just like Patti did AND her Gypsy cast recording won a Grammy.

  • Gypsy is closing because they'd have a hard time replacing Patti. Not because it's not as successful.

  • why is patti leaving?

  • personally, i think they are BOTH amazing, but they have different voices and a different take on the role :)did u see a run of it?? i wish i did :(

  • When is it closing? I want to see it! :)

  • It WAS closing March 1 but you know how the economy and what not is not allowing people to see broadway shows as much, so now it's closing January 11. I'm so upset I never got to see it.

  • Times are hard if a Patti LuPone show(or even Gypsy, for that matter) closes early!

  • i think the cast recording for patti is better and i thought that patti was better when i saw it on broadway... but still its gypsy's 3 time on b-way,and the roses have been: ethel merman bernadette peters and patti lupone! it couldn't get any better than that!

  • Gypsy's FIFTH time on Broadway. You left out Angela Lansbury and Tyne Daly

  • I personally love Patti's rose much better then Bern's. I love Bernadette Peters with all of my heart, but this role was Patti's best I believe. Both are amazing though.

  • I see Gypsy every Sunday matinee, front row seats and I got to meet her last Sunday. It was great. I have been the professor several shows and I have the pieces of paper she throws and the apples. I think I'm going to put "Professor" in Gypsy in my bios for kicks.

  • That was one of the best recordings of Gypsy I heard and this is going by youtube...I'm sure she's great live.

  • I saw Patti in "GYPSY" this past Wednesday evening, at the St James Theatre on 44th Street... simply BRILLIANT show and performance from Patti AND the entire cast of this marvelous show!!! I thouroughly enjoyed this show; truly a highlight of my trip to Manhattan and New York City. I'll never forget it and remember it fondly :)

  • hey everyone! guess whos reading for pop on the recording. ill give you a hint. hes really old and he wrote and directed a hell of a musical! i thought it was nice that they snuk him in.

  • i thought pattis version of aome people was a little... too much. Of course shes still my favorite.

  • How is it too much? It's perfect...SHE IS GOD!!! I saw it last Sunday.

  • If you thought it was too much you should see liza minelli perform it...

  • oye vey, liza minelli sang this?..now that would be over the top

  • monrocsol, im not saying shes bad at all i was replying to nycagents comment because he said she was boring and dull...ive seen gypsy and it was the best show i ever saw!!

  • i gave you a thumbs down but now i take it back. lol.

  • I don't like how she hits that high note on "Rose" at the end of the song. That note should be reserved for when she sings "Rose" at the end of the song's bridge, or what's called "Seattle to Los Angeles" on the new cast recording. That's the way I have directed it, and the way I think it sounds best.

  • I'm gonna see this with her again, I'm soooo excited, I'm probalby gonna get the album.

  • i loved her in this role i saw her too!

  • capital P, buddy.

  • im sorry your all gonna kill me but.. Patti is a better mama rose.. but in Some People .. bernadette actually has a better version.. Pattis version is just too much of a concert verion .. its just tooo much... its too patti not enough Rose... and ive heard other live recordings and its the same...

  • I agree with you, and I'm someone who thinks Patti is brilliant as Mama Rose and Peters was, well, let's just say a hue flop. In her, Patti, defense though, when you see hr acting live with this song it is much more compelling...

  • Merman's "Some People" is on the slow side, which is odd because that's the way the song was written by Jule Styne. In subsequent revivals it has been sped up, and I think works better. Merman's version had the passion though, that no-holds-barred mentality that is the force behind Roe in "Some People."

  • which is why she won a tony for her role as rose...because shes boring and dull right?

  • you don't know what you are talking about. Go to the show and you'll be nailed with Ms Lupone's Rose's Turn. A torrent of a voice!

  • dude thats like the dumbest thing to say ever!

out of all people shes boring?

    shes crazy amazing!

and one of like the funniest people ever

  • NO! how could she be boring if she won the tony. i saw this musical a few days ago and she was AMAZING!

  • I agree. Anyone who criticizes Patti is either deaf, blind, tone deaf or just plain stupid

  • As much as I love Patti Lupone, I don't like anyone who says that someone is beyond criticism. We have our preferences, your preferences are not any more right than anyone else's. No one is beyond criticism, be it God or Patti Lupone.

  • I loved her in Evita and I love her in Gypsy!

  • Patti's voice never translates quite as well to recording... she's always much better in person. Still, even with a few questionable notes, the tone of her voice here is thrilling as always.

But if you're able to go see her on Broadway, do it. She's just captivating.

  • Not

  • Thanks for your reply Patti.

  • LOL!

    Just my POV.

    I wish I were PATTI!

But Patti was NOT OUT OF TUNE. let's take a vote! checking out the 0:40 area.

    It's fine!

  • Okay. Here's my vote. She's out of tune. "But IIIIIIIIIIII at least gotta try. The "I" is at least a half-key sharp -- too high -- than it should be.

    Have fun voting. :)

  • okay, yeah there is something funny with that note... I just thought the vibrato tht carried it up a bit...

    hmmm listening some more ...

  • i love bernadette but omg not as mama rose her voice is OVERLY nasily to be singing this big.

  • AHHH i need this recording!!!! haha i saw it twice last weekend and im going back jul30 and seeing it again and again! GO SEE GYPSY ITS AMAZING ITS PATTI!

  • This version is actually a little bland compared to others... that ive heard in the past...

  • SPIDERMAN THE MUSICAL!!!!???? Shoot me now! >.>

  • Her Tony speech was hilarious. "Shut up it's been 29 years!" Lol, I love her, and her voice.

  • the great thing about this show is that the cast is FANTASTIC. i mean the original material is amazing too but the cast just brought it up a step higher.

  • Patti Lupone shined in this role that, from some others I have heard who have done it, surely have not done. Patti is a true star of Broadway and even my friend who went with me, who doesn't like musicals, was amazed at how wonderful this revival of "Gypsy" was.

  • I dont have a problem with flashy and glitzy sometimes it's just what you want like i love phantom and hairspray and wicked but i dont think that patti belongs in a show like that. She needs material not glitz thats why shes so great in concert versions of shows. Shows nowadays are pretty lame but to tell you the truth it's what people want.

  • you're totally right... i mean come on shows like they're making a Shrek musical and a Spiderman musical... SERIOUSLY! theatre is really dying :'( it is so sad and if you think about it, most of the shows on right now are either a revival or based on movies.

(gypsy is an exception.. :P i mean i got to see patti lupone, laura benanti, and boyd gains!)

  • finally someone who has the voice for the score..... no offense to the other roses but the BIG voice is essential
