This brings back such a memory. Back in 1984 the woman who turned me on the Chaka's music was a USN ensign who worked with my roomie on Okinawa. Ensign Finley was tall, curly blonde, with a fresh peach skin, and she could hit high all the same high notes as Chaka singing along to the album.
Agreed..studio version a little more true to the melody plus hadincredible high notes on "make your mark..." portion of lyric. (Stompin at Savoy has about 4 studio cuts--besides the live songs on there) I love Chaka, but cannot quite get into this version as much as the studio version from 83' --It truly had a 1950s feel, much like "End of A Love Affair" from the 1989 "CK" album.
@KwikTee I hear you Tee but listen again as if you never heard the original khan version. IT is scintillating. But I agree the original needs to be posted.
the scale she did from 4:20 is another reason why she's dubbed as a "perfect contralto voice"..each note in that descending scale is perfectly pitched!!! AWESOME!!!
torch song ....to all the torch songs and the romantics that sing them!

Can't compare anyone today to the greats.
The technology has people out there who couldn't hold a note to save their lives.
Things are never going to be the same.

I too prefer the studio version, but this is good too. Just my own preference. Who can possibly compare to Miss Kahn today? No one.
