"Why is the US more religious than other industrialised countries?" Personally, I think one reason is poor education. Poor school education (some schools still teach creation science!!!) and then extremely expensive tuition costs for further education means that the education standard is unfortunately low in many parts of the US. The more educated a person, the more open they become to the idea that science trumps archaic books of fiction, but not every kid gets that far!

@littlemckay It's going to take a boost in education and then another generation or two to get a better religious balance. That's just my two cents. And I'm talking from experience: I went to school in the US and upon moving to UK, I was told I'd have to be put back 1-2 years to compensate (thankfully I was a dweeb who did a lot of extracurricular study and passed the tests so I didn't have to do that).

I think it's interesting that you make excuses for Obamas religious beliefs, and your grandmothers religious beliefs, but Ron Paul doesn't get the same leniency. There's myriad reasons to want to slap Obama in the mouth, and there's a fair number on the actual left who feel the same. Obama is the most religious president we have had since Carter. He named his autobiography after his favorite sermon. he regularly quotes religious passages in speeches and uses New Testament examples in making his case for programs.

@csaver Don't think so. Lot's of european country have laws addressing freedom of belief, in much the same terms than US 1st amendment. But, except right wing extremist our polititians don't play with religion in politics anymore. Because religions have screw us over since the fall of the roman empire.

US polititians play with religions like T. J. "King" Kong (Dr Strangelove) riding an atomic bomb like rodeo cowboy ... people follow & are religious. At the end it goes Kboom.

The United States has been a swirly melting pot of ideas with no official guide from up high, so while European religion stagnated, American culture has been intensely religious.

Though I agree w/ most of what you're saying, I don't think only religion is responsible for atrocities. Take what you said about the head-cutting, psychopaths do just that and ironically enough, they're not motivated by religion. Even Hitler himself was driven by a personal outlook on life and what he thought was the source of society's ills, not religion per se.

Dude, that's nothing. On the street I live on, there are 2 churches side by side and another directly across the street from them(one baptist, one pentecostal, and one presbyterian) . And that's just on my street. And my city is very fucking small. A population of just under 5,000 people. Here, there are over 325 listings for churches and other places of worship. It's both sad and pathetic. You can look it up if you want, Hazard Kentucky.

That's so sad that you seem surrounded by religion so much, I think I could count on one hand the amount of people of my generation that were ever religious that are friends of mine. The norm in the UK is to be athiest as far as I'm aware.

Also from what I've seen the candidates for the US election seem quite shocking, I feel sorry for politics. I remeber being so wound up that here in the UK we even allow religious people to get anywhere near politics. Great videos btw :)

Thanks for answering my question. I live very close to roughly 8 churches, and in my 13 years of being a working stiff, I've only came across 2 people I know who are atheist. It's always been a challenge to 'hide' my atheism as a professional, as it's been the reason I've been fired before, and the reason I've been alienated to the point of quitting before. Most of the people I know are devout christian. The internet is a respite from being forced to be what I am not. Keep up the good work.
