I thought the same thing about AK's, good stopping power right!? It all goes down the tubes when you examine coroner's reports and the tumbling effects of bullets. An M16 bullet tends to tumble much quicker, once making contact with soft body material. Where as the Ak round is more likely to "punch through", leaving a cleaner wound. This effect, of the M16 round, gives it a lot more stopping power than otherwise percieved.
You guys don't realize that 5.56 (M4) ammunition weighs drastically less than 7.62, which the AKs shoot. The government did research on how many more rounds could be carried, and the difference was drastic.
@LakeMonsterToMo AK-47's aren't that bad. They're reliable...and powerful...that's about it, but if I had to pick a rifle for today's warfare...street-to-street (predominantly), I'd choose an AK-47. I would want a gun capable of dropping an enemy who's using opiates in one or two shots...not 4 or 5..or more as is the case with 5.56mm rifles. If I wanted accuracy, I'd take an M16...rate of fire: an M4...but overall, the AK-47 isn't all that bad.
@ShadowScope they are heavy, there ammunition is heavy, and there full auto (which they are designed for) is very hard to keep on target if not using conservative 2-3 round bursts....but hey its your preference if the situation arises lol
@LakeMonsterToMo I respect your opinion. The AK is only a couple pounds heavier and I understand how you'd rather have a lighter rifle so you can carry more ammunition. I thought the AK had a semi-auto function on the selector switch. I'm not an AK fan, but again, if the situation arised where I had to choose between an M4/16 or an AK in street-to-street, I'd choose the AK. I personally prefer the Barrett Rec7 or HK416. I've heard it's best to hold the AK horizontally when firing full auto.
@ShadowScope If I could have a mounted and zero'd in optic and possibly a rangefinder, then I'd absolutely choose an AK-47 instead of an M4 or HK416. As long as it's nice and accurate.
@UnRe4lSkat3r unfortunately they didn't show groups at 1000 yards... which is the real test of any 1000 yard prospective weapon. Anyway, all they did was reinvent the Barrett platform, and I would not bet a dollar that Sons of Guns outdid the Barrett team.
@ShadowScope The AK does have a semi-auto function on the selector switch. At least if you're talking about the AKM, which is by far the most common variant of the weapon. I'm pretty sure most 47s do as well, but I've never held an actual 47. Most people haven't. It's never preferable to hold a rifle sideways, they're meant to operate in the vertical. The HK 416 and other gas piston ARs really aren't particularly more reliable than the M4/M16, it's mostly marketing on HK's part.
@Nater245689 Holding the AK sideways was a joke. Its because the recoil of the AK is so high due to the 7.62mm round and while firing fully automatic, the muzzle climb becomes too much. So it's best to just hold it horizontally and fire so the muzzle "climb" sends it across the target...again...it's a joke.
@ShadowScope You would be surprised how many people think that you're supposed to shoot the AK horizontally while in the prone position. The 7.62x39mm cartridge really doesn't have that much recoil at all. AK's just have fairly high recoil for a given caliber due to their operating system. Shoot a 5.56 AK and compare it to an AR.

@bdurrance33193 To each their own. I've only fired a heavily modified AR-15 with 20" barrell (M16 length). I have no problems with it being used in close quarters, but if I had to choose between the 16 and 4, I would take the M4 for CQB.

What I say about the Gulag is that I believe criminals must be given the old treatment of forced labor (to a limit, of course) . Not to suck the living of us taxpayers. Second, the 5.56mm might be accurate but it's stopping power is minimum (compared to a real rifle caliber like the 7.62x51mm). The 7.62x39mm (AK47 round) does the job at mid range. The American made 6.8mm SPC is a good alternative.
My father was a Vietnam vet. He told me that U.S. soldiers used the M-16 till they got their hands on a AK-47. They would typically set the M-16 off to the side from that point on. He said the M-16 would jamb easily. The AK however could be dragged through the mud and fired with no issues. He told me the most important about firing the AK-47, was to let your fellow soldiers know you had 1. Or they might shoot back. I'm sure the M-16's design has improved a lot from Vietnam till now.

The AK's arent that bad, not as accurate as some of the other rifles out there, but hey its a beastly gun, can take a beating, and once you get hit by it, your probably not getting back up after the first shot
@darkman30200 - You should qualify that answer to the AK's - many of the AKs floating around the American market are sh*t, MAK-90's and cheap Chinese models. Genuine Russian AKs with a forged receiver and threaded barrels are a VERY nice rifle. I had one with tritium sites. Was a thing of beauty actually.

But i know from what i've seen and read, that its extremely durable, able to fire even if its flooded with water and filled with dirt or mud. I've even seen it shoot when the barrel was bent quite a ways to the left on a show.
@TeoZMuff313 Pretty much, its accurate to its limits and sometimes beyond, doesnt have much kick to it, and theres plenty of ammo to spare, helps that its extremely durable and reliable.
@usmcgunner58 I *had* a Russian AK (never should have sold it), Have a Mini 14 chambered 7.62x39, Mini 14 .223 and an AR15 .223, AR15 .243 and a Beowulf .50. - (and a few Remington 700's .308, 270, and .300 Winchester Mag). I'm VERY familiar with both rounds.

That being said, Just basically the AK has a LOT bigger projectile and with a soft tip or ballistic tip you are going to do A LOT more damage. A 30 cal 123 Grain vs a 53 Grain bullet? I have shot my share of Deer, granted never used a .223 (was illegal to use .22 Cal in MN until recently). Never had a Deer get up after my kids hit it with a 7.62x39 out of an old Chinese SKS. I like my .270 for Deer.

I spent 8 years in the Marine Corps Infantry, 4 tours of combat, wounded twice. Ontop of that, I was a CQB instructor my last 8 months in.I've forgtten more about small arms practical combat use than you could learn. I'm glad you've killed a few deer, I've killed terrorists.

ak 47's are known for their reliability in any situation and also the sound is different from typical American weapons which can confuse an enemy thats why they're using them
in that case, they are just drawing fire from down below. I would imagine aks of all varieties are plentiful in that particular AO. When the enemy shoots back, they can find the muzzle flash and use their rifles to take them out.

Vietnam, political, not tactical defeat. Gulf War, crushing victory. Iraq, seems like a modest victory. Friendly regime installed. Afghanistan, on going. I thought the same thing about AK's, good stopping power right!? It all goes down the tubes when you examine coroner's reports and the tumbling effects of bullets. An M16 bullet tends to tumble much quicker, once making contact with soft body material. Where as the Ak round is more likely to "punch through", leaving a cleaner wound. This effect, of the M16 round, gives it a lot more stopping power than otherwise percieved.

@LakeMonsterToMo AK-47's aren't that bad. They're reliable...and powerful...that's about it, but if I had to pick a rifle for today's warfare...street-to-street (predominantly), I'd choose an AK-47. I would want a gun capable of dropping an enemy who's using opiates in one or two shots...not 4 or 5..or more as is the case with 5.56mm rifles. If I wanted accuracy, I'd take an M16...rate of fire: an M4...but overall, the AK-47 isn't all that bad.

@LakeMonsterToMo I respect your opinion. The AK is only a couple pounds heavier and I understand how you'd rather have a lighter rifle so you can carry more ammunition. I thought the AK had a semi-auto function on the selector switch. I'm not an AK fan, but again, if the situation arised where I had to choose between an M4/16 or an AK in street-to-street, I'd choose the AK. I personally prefer the Barrett Rec7 or HK416. I've heard it's best to hold the AK horizontally when firing full auto.

@ShadowScope The AK does have a semi-auto function on the selector switch. At least if you're talking about the AKM, which is by far the most common variant of the weapon. I'm pretty sure most 47s do as well, but I've never held an actual 47. Most people haven't. It's never preferable to hold a rifle sideways, they're meant to operate in the vertical. The HK 416 and other gas piston ARs really aren't particularly more reliable than the M4/M16, it's mostly marketing on HK's part.

@Nater245689 Holding the AK sideways was a joke. Its because the recoil of the AK is so high due to the 7.62mm round and while firing fully automatic, the muzzle climb becomes too much. So it's best to just hold it horizontally and fire so the muzzle "climb" sends it across the target...again...it's a joke.

@ShadowScope You would be surprised how many people think that you're supposed to shoot the AK horizontally while in the prone position. The 7.62x39mm cartridge really doesn't have that much recoil at all. AK's just have fairly high recoil for a given caliber due to their operating system. Shoot a 5.56 AK and compare it to an AR.

Second, the 5.56mm might be accurate but it's stopping power is minimum (compared to a real rifle caliber like the 7.62x51mm). The 7.62x39mm (AK47 round) does the job at mid range. The American made 6.8mm SPC is a good alternative.

My father was a Vietnam vet. He told me that U.S. soldiers used the M-16 till they got their hands on a AK-47. They would typically set the M-16 off to the side from that point on. He said the M-16 would jamb easily. The AK however could be dragged through the mud and fired with no issues. He told me the most important about firing the AK-47, was to let your fellow soldiers know you had 1. Or they might shoot back. I'm sure the M-16's design has improved a lot from Vietnam till now.

Genuine Russian AKs with a forged receiver and threaded barrels are a VERY nice rifle. I had one with tritium sites. Was a thing of beauty actually.

But i know from what i've seen and read, that its extremely durable, able to fire even if its flooded with water and filled with dirt or mud. I've even seen it shoot when the barrel was bent quite a ways to the left on a show.

That being said, Just basically the AK has a LOT bigger projectile and with a soft tip or ballistic tip you are going to do A LOT more damage. A 30 cal 123 Grain vs a 53 Grain bullet? I have shot my share of Deer, granted never used a .223 (was illegal to use .22 Cal in MN until recently). Never had a Deer get up after my kids hit it with a 7.62x39 out of an old Chinese SKS. I like my .270 for Deer.
