God, I grew up watching this show. My mom would serve me some cornbread and beans about halfway through. I can only gues but I'm guessing this is about 1971--but who knows? I was always a jerry reed fan. I miss him.
The drummer is Larry Londin; played on thousands of Nashville studio sessions; did many drum overdubs for Elvis in the late '70s, especially for Elvis' live albums ; he also played drums for Elvis live on occasion ('76, '77) when Ronnie Tutt had another commitment; Londin drummed with Elvis at his last concert ever on June 26, 1977
Paul Yandall! absolute great player, taste and tone (Jerry too!) playing a lovely early 50s tele!! Your right CRAP MIX!!! Guitar is way too high! but Pauls was (and probably still is!) great Tele player.
@JamesTKirkCobain Don't get me wrong--Van Halen is a great guitarist and all--but Van Halen isn't one of the four guitarists to ever be named a C.G.P. by Chet Atkins!
@jamminjohn I like Eddie Van Halen as well, though he's not my personal favorite rock guitarist...in all honesty, I can't even decide who is at this point. I don't know if you've ever heard it, but Eric Johnson has a song called "Tribute to Jerry Reed" and he is the only rock guitarist I've ever heard play that Jerry Reed-style to this day.
I've watched this video dozens of times ! I entertain myself wondering how many nights it had been since Jerry'd had a decent sleep. But for the first time tonight I noticed Jerry trying to fly under the radar with an "equipment readjustment " on national TV with his left hand at 4:01, then six minutes later giving Porter an Air Kiss towards his neck.("I know it and I love you"..smooch) This man is just hilarious. Teetering on the verge of chaos. I cannot get over him !
@deadhellfire: Yo confusin som kinda child abusin bandit wit the greatest Charles Edward Berry ! Know the facts and learn em well afore spoutin out yo ass !
so sick....man i feel foolish...where have i been.......i just stumbled onto one of my new favorite artist...and never was into much country but cash and nelson..but reed man hes fuckin dope not just him but the band......
@BadVizion I'm with you... Up till about 6 months ago, all I knew him for was Smokey and the Bandit. Since then I've discovered a world class guitarist, songwriter and overall entertainer. He's amazing
@BadVizion Yes. Jerry was sought out by Elvis Presley to do "promised land". Elvis wanted that "sound" on the song. The producer told him "jerry is a finger picker and no one sounds like him".
I thought that Jerry Reed was an actor? I didn't know he was a musician / singing. Didn't he do movies with Clint Eastwood? I liked him as an actor and now a musician as well. :o)
crockyoshighty: Jerry Reed was in a few movies, including all three Smokey and the Bandit films. In fact, he seems to be best known for his role in those films. Of course, Reed did the soundtracks for the two first Smokey and the Bandit films, but not the third.
Most people--including many guitarists--don't know how great of a guitarist Jerry Reed was...thank God that Chet Atkins, Eric Johnson, Brad Paisley, Brent Mason and a number of other guitar greats have recognized Reed for his music!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
That was great ! Real rock n' roll without the threat of the black man in it. That was just what the white parents wanted and jerry reed gave it to them.
Jerry always played out of a lot of wierd tunings, so playing straight guitar over his original style is exceptionally difficult. Very few guitarists, in my opinion, ever meshed with Jerry's pickin' fluidly. Chet Atkins and Jerry always sounded great together.
Southern white guys are more convincing than we are here (NY) and they're WAY ahead of the Brits. It helps to be surrounded by this music and the people who play it from birth.
brother i can allmost agree with you except for one thing im british i been listening to this stuff since birth and allthough alot of brits are way too ignorant of the music that truly gave them shit like metalica i really think its not nationality as much as ignorance i mean i feel like an alabama banjo picker and i love this music
Before making his own hit records and starring in movies, Jerry Reed played guitar on records by Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Bobby Bare, Dolly Parton, Elvis, Ringo Starr, Joan Baez, and many others. Thanks for the memories of Jerry & Porter.
Same question as jimmybusk: Do you or anyone have the clip of Jerry doing the country medley instrumental from this show?! (medley starts with an instrumental of "I never promised you a rose garden, if I'm right"). If you do ..,PLEASE ,PLEASE post it!!! I can't get it out of my head...it's beautiful.
