To me, no engine comes close to this beautiful sound, maybe only the Ferrari 412T2's V12, but mid 2000's V10 were the best sounfing engines ever made. Today's 18000 rpm limited V8 engines are a joke
@SiulF1 IMHO the 90's 3.5liter where even better, like the renault that's somewhere in the sugested videos. From then onwards the engine's sound became more and more high pitched and metallic. It's rather annoying.
@McLarenMercedes I have listened to the BRM V16 before and it's true that it has a quite particular sound but I still prefer the latest V10. I went to a A1GP race back in 2005 and there was a historic F1 race. I don't remember all of the cars that raced but I do remember that there was a Lotus 79, a Matra V12 and a Renault RS01 so tere I cuold compare different all kind of engines. On another occation I went to a demo run of a McLaren Honda MP4-5 and although those 3.5L V10 sound great...
@McLarenMercedes ...there's no comparison to 2004/2005 engines. When you listened to them coming out from the last corner shifting up to 7th gear in the main straight, it was like a best was coming. Especially the Honda V10. This engine was louder than any other. I think their V8 was louder too.

Honda has lost it in recent years. The most performance based car they have left is the Civic Si/Type R. Its a great car, I own the Si, but Honda needs to go back to its roots fast.
Honda will cease manufacturing the Civic Type R, the last hope for the Honda freaks in JPN at the end of this August, which means at least in the Japanese market, there will be no sport car made by Honda. CR-Z? That doesn't count.
Dear Honda. Please bring back the passion. You are not a mere automaker!!

This would be awesome to drop in an s2000 and blow the doors off the 599gtbs and murcielagos of So Cal but you'd probably hafta rebuild it like every month.
Honda were the first I believe who designed the short conrods and engine block to increase revolutions and now they are out of FORMULA 1? That sucks hard!
I'm thinking they use the onboard shifting and acceleration data and feed it in. If you listen, you can hear the engine rpms wobble a bit, I THINK thats from the drivers foot bouncing around on the foot pedal while going through bumps and rumble strips.. dont know, Just thought about that though... maybe be why it sounds like its jumping :)..
@KILLERBJDMEF8 nah man take the K24A block and custom cast your own block using the design to make a 4.8L V8 with K20A iVTEC heads...500hp all motor easy
I love the sound its TOO COOL, however it needs a little help climbing back up to the higher operating range of the engine.. I can solve this problem.. Robert M.
man you can hear it accelerate off the line and get into the s's. If you play rfactor do like 50 laps at suzuka til you're smooth then lay down and listen to this with your eyes closed and you can HEAR the whole lap.
No. The Honda S2000 produced 241 HP stock. With some little modifications (c.a.i., exedy clutch, perf. exhaust, etc..., you can get very close to 300 HP... And its N/A, and only 2.0, and inl 4... So whats the problem with that?
Yeah, 10K later. Not worth it to still have 0 torque. Horsepower doesn't even matter until after 5250 Rpms..why do you think F1 cars never drop to that level...If you're running close to 300 horse on that 2.0, you've got 12.0+ compression, independent throttle bodies and just a huge waste of money when you could have something faster and better looking for less than what you spent.
Indeed, if it is the 2005 super suzuka spec V10 engine, it must have approached if not exceeded 1000BHP! Clearly 2003-2005 was the second most powerful F1 era after the 1985-1987 turbo era!
That engine just screams! I remember walking along the back straight at Indy and the Honda engine would shake the ground as the car passed. I loved how Honda would always push their technology to the limit!
I agree. Watching those CART Honda engines in the 1990's and early 2000's was a pleasure. Too bad Tony George and the IRL killed open wheel racing in America.
It was a pleasure seeing Honda compete with FORD, CHEVY, MERCEDES for American open wheel dominance. It was rumoured that the CART engines were pushing well over 1000 HP!
the real reason honda quit... the engine development freeze that restrict them from coming out with insane engine designs that push the limits like this one. great going max... i won't miss you when you go.
It's the global recession that forced Honda to quit F1. Honda lost 10+ billion dollars in 2008. It made no sense to spend hundreds of millions per year to stay in F1. Plus, during their last 2 years in F1, Honda had no sponsorships on their car, so they paid every penny to stay in F1.
Other teams, like McLaren, Ferrari etc, have big sponsorship packages to help cover the expenses of a F1 Team. Even Toyota & Renault is rumored to quit F1 after 2009.
However it retained its other racing business, for example in IRL and elsewere...so I believe that the most important reason for leaving were the poor results and not the recession.
I agree. Honda has a rich tradition with F1. It's a pity they left F1. Hopefully, they will return one day and have a real racing outfit run the team with less corporate oversight from Japan.
Too bad HONDA is now mainliy relegated to racing in the IRL ( a spec-series with only 1 chassis and engine package). Plus, the IRL engine sounds horrible and the drivers claim it needs more power. And the Dallara chassis looks ugly too! TV ratings prove that Indycar is a shell of its former self.
At the chinese gp 2005, both renaults had special one off 3.0l v10 engines that produced roughly 970bhp. This was the last race of the v10 era. I have to admit, rev limits are NOT F1!!! That's for all the other categories.
We've really lost something in F1 these days. The shriek of these amazing V10s makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end. Those weedy little 2.4 v8s are nothing compared to this monster!
These engines are almost at a 1000hp..!!! HONDA, is the only F1 team.. that has ever got close too 1000hp.. i believe these engines put out 960hp.. Simply, AMAZING.. HONDA, THE POWER OF DREAMS ! ! !
Bernie, mosley, mercedes renault and toyota are responsibles.
HONDA, ferrari and BMW was against these rules of single archtecture for the engine, the fucking weak limit at 19 000 rpm and this electronic control unit made by MLaren for everybody .
1) it dont matter about the ecu at the end of the day the map will be the same whatever you use so they could test with something they are used to and then put the final map into the mclaren ecu
2) this engine isnt revving more than 19400 anyway so the 19k limit isnt too bad but 09 will see a 18k limit which will suck.
Yes ... but 100 times more respect for the humans that strap themselves to the wheeled-machine that this monster powers! They are called FORMULA 1 DRIVERS !
Cosworth V10 was never the best, but it was always a good unit. Honda's V10 in 2004 and 2005 was the best in the field, while BMW and Ferrari had the best units from 2001 - 2003. Cosworht's V8 of 2006 was very good on the other hand (the first to rev up to 20000 rpm), but in terms of overall performance, it wasn't better than any of the other units. Remember, achieving revs that high results in compromises to bore X stroke, which results in compromised torque.
that's the Honda RA004E

Listen to the BRM V16 from the 1950's. Nothing in F1 has ever sounded like that before or since.
Also the boxer 12's used by Ferrari in the 70's sounded way more "Ferrari" than any 90's engine.
Also, Matra V12 was memorable, as was the Honda V12 from 1991-1992.
Type Senna McLaren Honda V12... Oh and please listen to the BRM V16. Those who have never heard it know nothing.

Now that Honda Racing is dead, will they continue to make F1 engines or are they done completely?
drummerfan277 3 years ago
I think they stop totally. They waiting for new rules with total liberty of research.
Not like the weak rules of nova days.
Now they are already in the futur, they the Hondajet who is the most microjet of the world !
And they have the FCX, the fuel cell car.
They are always in advance, but now in the sky
or with the hydrogen or the humanoid.
Formula one is a piece of shit since these fucking 2.4 V8 rules and single control unit made by mac Laren ! That is an heresy

The greatest engine tech feat of the modern F1 era. F@#K You Bernie for robbing the sport of its true essence.

Good speak mate.
Bernie, mosley, mercedes renault and toyota are responsibles.
HONDA, ferrari and BMW was against these rules of single archtecture for the engine, the fucking weak limit at 19 000 rpm and this electronic control unit made by MLaren for everybody .
All this shit is just business of dirty bastards.

1) it dont matter about the ecu at the end of the day the map will be the same whatever you use so they could test with something they are used to and then put the final map into the mclaren ecu
2) this engine isnt revving more than 19400 anyway so the 19k limit isnt too bad but 09 will see a 18k limit which will suck.

listening to engines as beautiful as F1 engines always brings a tear to my eye.

If you know Suzuka, you can sort of mentally visualize where the car is at, at a given time, just hearing the sound. :)

Is it me not being used to the V10's sound anymore or is this one revving more than usual? A little V12ish...

The Cosworth V10 spanked everybody (and the V8 in 2006) during its last season, Honda included.
Great British Engineering... COSWORTH RULES!
strange6 3 years ago
Cosworth V10 was never the best, but it was always a good unit. Honda's V10 in 2004 and 2005 was the best in the field, while BMW and Ferrari had the best units from 2001 - 2003. Cosworht's V8 of 2006 was very good on the other hand (the first to rev up to 20000 rpm), but in terms of overall performance, it wasn't better than any of the other units. Remember, achieving revs that high results in compromises to bore X stroke, which results in compromised torque.

思わずコースを連想しながら聞き入ってしまいました。さすがにセナ足音は聞けませんでしたが完動しました。
jyunichi3000 3 years ago
Err.. More like 800hp~850hp for the last of the V10.
Only one that made over 1000hp is the Turbo era's 1.5L V6 TT engine in 85~88
koukiR32 3 years ago
RA004E made about 960 hp, and for the Salt Flats run was in excessof 1000

looks like an easy 1000hp shows it right on the dyno

f1 would be much more interesting if the drivers have 2 build their own cars from their own garage
vivalarey619 4 years ago
no it wouldn't, it would be a 3rd rate sport if that were to happen
yomammaspoodle 3 years ago
Now if only I could put one of these in my s2k...
