  • Thank you so much.

  • when I cut my body out, it only shows half of me was cut, why?

  • @96FUZZ Without seeing what you are doing it's hard to tell what the cause could be....

  • @GIMPtricks I could show you on skype

  • @96FUZZ I don't have skype. You could go to gimpchat dot com and post some screenshots in the help section there. There are plenty of people there that can help.

  • jesus Chr.... you forgot to say "thanks for watching", i ♥ that part

  • I don't like Obama, but thanks for the tutorial.

  • obama sucks, he's a warmonger

  • Awesome tutorial! Thank you so much!

  • I have a problem; when I click inside the dots oround dissapear instead to look like they look like when you do it (that running oround thingy). Any idea what could be wrong?

  • @anjaaa7 Try resetting your tool options. Press shift and click on the square arrow in the bottom right hand corner of the tool options dock.

  • @GIMPtricks Worked! Thanks alot =)

  • This tutorial was awesome. Thank you so much!

  • thxthx

  • Obama sucks, and I can't understand you.

  • abama

  • She's from Holland, I recogniez her accent.

  • are u canadian

  • @weeeeee831 Where are you from?

  • @GIMPtricks canada lol

  • @GIMPtricks holland?

  • @asarta703 Douze points for the United Kingdom! ;-)

  • Yes..I did..I just tried it in windows, and did the picture in no time flat!.. But in Mac its different..Please figure it out for me in the future thanks

  • @leadsbar I did everything I can for you. I gave you a link where you can ask for more help. You are the one with the Mac, I'm afraid that it's up to you to figure out what is wrong. Good luck and let me know if you solve it. :)

  • actually i didnt...ive done this several times on my windows... like i said..its all outlined, but no image is showing..just a border of where the scissors tool was.. something is not right??

  • @leadsbar Check it one more time. You need to click in the middle after you've outlined it. Make sure you've got a selection, not just an ouline.

If that isn't it then I can only suggest to go to gimptalk . com and ask there in the hope that anyone else on a Mac can help.

  • I just tried doing what you said.. and it deletes everything... the image border is visible, but no image from background.. any other ideas. Thanks

  • @leadsbar That means that you haven't made a proper selection. Watch the steps carefully from where I join the fist and last points to where I hit delete. You missed a step there.

  • Love your tutorials!! BUT...I just bought a Mac, and when I hit delete...Nothing happens??? The background stays put.. Can you help me... It works great on windows, but Mac is like alien..Thnaks

  • @leadsbar Yes, I've heard that on a Mac the short keys don't work, or not the same. Not sure.

Instead of delete you can go to edit -> clear in the menu.

  • im having a hard time selecting, when i finish connecting it all and i go to click inside the image i end up having to start all over again

  • @melbells101 In your tool options, when you have the scissors selected go to mode. Next to it are 4 little red squares. It's probably set to the third one. You need to click on the first one, the one where when you hover over it says, replace the current selection.

  • @GIMPtricks thanks!! tht helped alot! :)

  • i would like to put 2 images together after cutting them, how can i do that ?

  • @cutegirlsema In the next tutorial I show it. The link to that video is in the description.

  • @dinkymarshall1 Watch the video again. I cannot explain it any more clearly in a comment then I do in the video.

Make sure to take it slow and you don't miss a step.

  • 3:51 consuela meximaid

  • @dinkymarshall1 You need to make sure that you've created a selection before you hit delete.

  • OBAMA IS THE DEATH TO AMERICA!!!!!

  • I VERY much like ur tuts. U R precise in word and in showing it well slow enough to yet understand everything while watching the vid.

Other users vids I have to pause and rewind because they speak and show far too fast and at the end it took me much more time than like u being a bit slower in the first place.

UR tuts are so very effectiv in use for myself.

    Thank U.

  • @TheTrueResponder You're welcome. And thanks for the compliments.

  • I try to merge the layer down of a background like wha u told CriisyBabes to do but when i merge the layers the image is gone it shows the dashed lines i made around the image that i cut out but thats all how do i fix it? also is there anyway i could add photos to it?

  • @famke1janssen You need to deselect first by going to select -> none.

After you've opened your background as layer you need to move that layer down in your layer dialog. I suggest you watch my gimp beginner tutorial to understand how layers work.

  • haha nederlands zeker?

  • what screen recorder do you use?

  • @theenigma1230 actually sir, I am intelligent. 4.0 GPO. So go ahead. Comment on this. Waste more of your life. And I bid you good day.

  • I do exactly what I have to do, follow all steps at time but I still delete my whole image instead of the background, Do you know how I can fix that?

  • @Kleineman15 You somehow haven't made a selection before you press delete.

  • How do i acually put in a different background. i've cut it out but how do i change the background?

  • @CriisyBabes

Open the background you want to put as layer (file -> open as layers) and move that layer below the cut out layer.

  • God,ty with this i hate cutting in gimp,it anooys me alot..

    PS: Love your accent :D

    PPS: Transcribe Audio WIN!

  • nice gray hairs obama. worried about something??? democratic a-hole

  • great!!

  • love the way u say obama

  • You are awesome!!!! Thanks for the awesome videos!! :D

  • Thanks for the tutorial. Very helpful for those migrating from Photoshop to GIMP.

  • This is so much easier than reading HELP. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!

  • is there any way to keep a little bit of the original picture as a sort of border around the part of the image you're trying to cut out?

  • @CUcumBerJUiCE04

Go to select - grow before you press delete.

  • @GIMPtricks thank you!

  • Thanks! This is the best Gimp tuturial i've seen yet!!! I can't wait to watch your next video.

  • @junebug2809 Thank you!

  • Thanks !! Its going to be very useful to me !!

  • My background didn't clear.

    How come?

  • @iArtalien

    Go to edit- clear.

If that doesn't help watch the video again, you've probably missed a step.

  • thank you so much! How should I save the image, sorry I didn't understand? save as? JPEG?

  • @frannol NO PNG

  • thank you so much!

  • thank you so much for this tutorial! I don't know how to use image editor except Paint and your video is very helpful.

  • thanks

  • Thanks. This was what I was looking for. I, however, saved it as PNG so I can put my picture with no background on my video editor.

  • thanks, but if i make a point in a wrong spot how do i delete it?

  • @asdcvbert You can't but you can drag it to the right spot.

  • @GIMPtricks Hi, I did all this and I wanted to copy and paste the cut out image to another image open in GIMP, and when I paste on the other image, all I see is a gray outline of the shape of the image. Thank you, please respond.

  • @GIMPtricks Never mind! Problem solved! I was also wondering, how do you stretch images to fit certain areas? All I know how to do is move them, not stretch the length and width.

  • @robobobo771 With the scale tool in the tool box. But if you stretch an image the quality will suffer.

  • mine has the alpha channel but its grey and unusable, how can i add it?

  • @MusicFanOF80

That means that your image already has an alpha channel and that you can skip that step.

  • @elcubano97 p.s. Or did you mean that the background isn't transparent when you delete? In that case you missed another step. Anyway, just watch again. :)

  • @elcubano97

Watch again, you missed a step somewhere in between 2:35 and 3:10

  • Hey i have a problem when i cut it out and press delete instead of cutting out the image it becomes the couler of my brush?

  • @neji243243 sorry not that problem the problem is when i finish cutting select where i want to cut i click the middle just like you but instead of cutting everything around it it only cuts out what i selected so for example instead of cutting out everything outside obama it cuts out obama can you please respond as soon as posible beacause i need this for my project toworrow Thank you and have a nice day :)

  • @neji243243

Think you may have forgotten a step. Go to layers - transparency - add alpha channel. This way you add transparency to your image and the background will be gone when you press delete.

  • @GIMPtricks Ya i forgot to invert, Thanks :)

  • Also, you should check the "Feather Edges" option to get the smoothest and best looking edge on a selected area.

  • if you're on a mac press backspace...

  • @SamMcAlpin That's good info. I was told short keys don't work on a mac.

  • @GIMPtricks

... Of course shortcut keys work. instead of ctrl+(key), its cmd+(key).

  • it wont delete when i press the delete button it dont do anything???

  • @videogamerevie81

    Try going to edit- clear.

If you're on a mac (Is that the case?) the shortcuts won't work.

  • @GIMPtricks actualy im on pc but it worked so thanks.

  • OH MY GOD.

It will not delete my back ground, it deletes the whole thing!

    what do i do??

  • @JEROMEdBEAST

You read back the older comments. :)

ryanshecklercute had the same problem, just read my answer and let me know if that doesn't solve the problem.

  • very well done easy to follow GREAT TUTORIAL i was so confused on how to use the cutter tool thanks a mill

  • @pleasurebabi89 You're welcome.

  • This is a really good, clear, concise tutorial - explained very well, I have been through many (tens of tens) tutorials on gimp and this has to be the most easy to follow (picked up 3 new tricks just from this one tutorial) - well done and thank you!

  • @TheDianeBond Thank you for your nice comment!

  • Comment removed

  • @frankvanderholst Misschien moet iemand zijn Nederlandse spelling en grammatica wat verbeteren.

  • @GIMPtricks Even ter verduidelijking. ;-)

  • ... Lol... my computer crashed when I copied the image to gimp...

  • when I press delete in order to delete JUST the background it deletes me everything.. and the crop area....?? (sorry for my bad english) pls can u help me???...

  • @ryanshecklercute

Make sure a selection is created. You have to click on the beginning point to close the outline you've made and then,( it may take a few seconds before you can do this) click on the middle to create the selection.

Look closely at the cursor in the video.

  • how do you add a different background to behind obama or and cut object or move the selected object to a different background?

  • @bjlj998 I have a follow up tutorial where I do just that. Just look through my channel , it's the video that as uploaded straight after this one. :)

  • Oh, I just noticed, it's the second video responce to this video.

  • Photoshop is the best one .... am i wronng ?

  • Depends on what you're using it for. But overall yes. For making cut out like these they are as good as each other.

  • Obama's Hair is Unselectable......LooooL

  • this shit didnt help me at ALL

  • Are you using Photoshop? This is a different program, called GIMP.

  • @GIMPtricks not to be a smart ass but i think i know what im using why would i come to here if i wasnt DUH IM USING GIMP!

  • @przlilplaya4eva

Because it says (Magnetic lasso Photoshop) in the title and lots of people don't know what GIMP is. Then you said that this simple very straight forward tutorial didn't help you at all so I jumped to the wrong conclusion.

The scissor select tool doesn't work on all photos, only ones with a contrasting background. Maybe that's why it didn't work for you?

  • Thankyou SO much, i'm new to GIMP and this tutorial has helped me out with the basics! ;)

  • Hi, again thanks for all the videos - great for an absolute gimp-amateur like me :)

Can you tell me if it is impossible to delete a note once it is made with the scissor tool? I find it very frustrating to make a small mistake after scissoring for a long time, and I can't find out how to undo the last note?

    Keep up the good work!

  • You can't delete a node, but you can drag it to a spot where it fits on your cut out.

  • Thanks for the quick reply!

Ok, thats a shame, 'cause it seems that some nodes dont want to be draged where it want it to :(

A smart but very annoying tool to work with :)

  • what is the version of Gimp ur using?

  • sometimes when i had finished connecting all the points instead of the selection icon appearing a minus sign or - would appear and it wouldn't select the image. why?

  • Look in your toolbox. Make sure that "substract from the current selection" isn't selected in there.

See my video on how to make a text balloon to see what I mean. I use "add to the current selection" there when I use the lasso tool in that video. Hover over the icons to see what they are called.

  • Add Alpha channel is not available for me to select , I did everything you did, I linked and clicked in the middle and decreased the size

  • If add alpha channel is not available that usually means that there already is an alpha channel so you can just skip that step.

  • tnx

  • when i click delete on my keyboard, the image i want to stay, goes away with the backround. did i cut the picture out wrong? i did all the steps correctly.

  • Are you sure you made a selection. After you've closed your outline that you've made with scissors you must click in the middle. It can take a while before you are able to click.

Watch carefully from 2:22 and on

At 2:52 you see the cursor change. When that happens, click in the middle and it should make a selection.

  • If it's greyed out in the menu then it means that it's already there so you don't need to worry about it. Just continue with the tutorial.

  • okay,

    thank you for the help.

do you know a program who do the same thing as gimp, only on videos.

  • No I don't. A lot of people use Adobe fireworks or Sony Vegas but I wouldn't know what they can do exactly as I don't use them.

  • Sorry, I meant Adobe After Effect (I think, am not sure now anymore. lol)

  • when i try to delete the background it will not go away. Its stays. I'm really angry.

  • try edit > clear

    or

    edit > cut

  • whata shitty picture to cut out..

  • Actually it's a very good picture to cut out. It's high resolution, it has a contrasting background and it's placed in the public domain so I can use it without violating copyright laws.

If you want a political discussion, you're in the wrong place.

  • ahh thankyou so much, this was VERY easy to follow (:

  • hey thanks a lot. I have been using photoshop for a few years and this was my first successful gimp tutorial it felt good lol. I am now learning and I can only get better. thanks again

  • You're welcome.

  • wat version of gimp is this???

  • version 2.6.7 (the latest stable version) with a theme used (see my video Installing gimp themes on windows). That's why the buttons may look a little bit different.

  • If it's something that's in the video, can you tell me the time when it shows in the video? I'm not sure what you mean with little round selection icon. :\

If it's what I think it is, then you probably just need to wait a while. It can be slow for me too.

  • :s

every time i try to delete the background the whole thing goes poof.

  • And what do you mean with "the whole thing"? Something in the image or gimp itself?

  • the whole image.

  • Make sure that the marching ants selection line is made and inverted so only the background is selected.

If for some reason you do not have that selection then you will delete everything.

  • thank you so much that was great, p.s. I love your voice, I think it's kinda sexy ;)

  • what version of photoshop is this because my layout is different to yours plus I dont have the transparency option in the 'layer section

i have photoshop cs2 and have prevously installed sc4 but still dont see the option or scissor select panel

  • This isn't photoshop. It's GIMP. The scissor select tool in GIMP is the equivalent of the magnetic lasso tool in photoshop. Good news is that GIMP is a free alternative to photoshop. You can get it at gimp (dot) org.

  • oh haha, I thought gimp was just a user name you choose for yourself! :-)

I will download now and try your advice once again, Thank god I only have the trial version of photoshop.

  • It will be a bit of getting used to if you are used to photoshop, but you will get the hang of it after a little bit. :)

  • 0:28 Interactive boundaries must be dicked? O_o
