You say you're not a knife maker. But those knifes look pretty good to me. I wouldn't be ashamed carrying them around. The gun blue was a good idea, I must give that a go. Polished non stainless knives are a pain in the butt.
Beautiful edged weapons and tools. You did an excellent job and I know down deep you have that warm surge of accomplishment and creativity that will always top a store bought knife. Well done!!
I didn't. the answer to your question is, first you heat them to 1500 F then let them air cool. That makes them soft. then after shaping, you reheat them to 1500 F and quench in any kind of oil. Then you need to temper in a over 500 F for 1 hour and let cool
Hey nice work, botice that compressor u got under the bench and the angle grinder hooked up to thw hose, how soea ur tank hold up with the grinder, how big ia the tank and the scfm. Im lookjng for a compressor
great looking knives abd great job for your first run. have you considered other finishes for the wood? I use CA glue for some of the pens i make, never tried wiping it on something thats not spinning on a lathe but im sure it would still work out, that zebra wood will look awesome with a shiny clear coat and CA glue is hard as rock when cured. Best part is it dries in minutes or seconds if you use Accelerator on it. search you tube for CA finish.
the best way to get it good and soft to work with is get it hot enough a magnet won't stick to and then lay it in a bed of hot wood ash, let it cool overnight.
any blade will dull with time, no matter what it is. Depends on what you cut with it. Put it this way, I skinned my elk this year with 3 knives I made. They got the job done. Check out my NM Elk video
@TRAPnHUNT I did blue before I put the handles on. The problem is with shaping and sanding the handles will take some bluing off so you have to touch it up when you're done.
I'm kind of disappointed that I isn't get to see the finished product of the file but I'm sure it would be a good multi-purpose weapon. If I ever make a knife then I will follow these guidelines.
You sir have done a great job in this video. My grandad showed me how to do the same thing with old saw blades. Made a full kitchen cutlery set with a filet knife and the one thing that was the hardest was experimenting with tempering because some knives you want to be flexable and others you want no flex at all. I'm trying to use old snowplow scraper bars now to make machetes and also some leaf springs. Thanks for the video!
i like u'r knives.face it,u got bit by the knife makin bug.lol. i don't polish my blades either.i like the rustic look.i was impressed that u used hand tools more, when i saw all the power tools in your shop.after i made a few knives i met a knife-maker down the road from where i live.he suggested i try some of his fancy power machines...bad mistake on my part.
11:04 ...Quit clownin' around, I'd call you a knife maker ! Great job on the knives, love the patina. Those ought to be great at skinning, will wait for some reviews of these knives...nothing like field testing you're own knife, good luck w/ the hunting sir !
You might not be a knife maker but you could have fooled me. I think they look great. I'm getting ready to attempt my first one and I hope it comes out as good as those did. Nice work.
If you want a lighter finish you can try beeswax or tung oil, I get dang good results from those.
Curious, did you anneal the saw blades then harden after you were done grinding on them? I imagine they wouldn't be very hard to grind out to begin with, never worked with saw blades as a knife steel. Speaking of, what kind of saw blade did I use? Purchase a new one or just salvage an old rusty one from a scrap yard?
@ jman432432 , I heated the blades in my brake drum forge until the blades were non magnetic. Then quenched in oil until warm. I wiped off the oil and put them in toaster oven 45min @ 400 degrees.
You drag the file backwards across your work, Which dulls the edge off the file. that is why you are spending so much time filing. you need to look up softening or anealing the metal .that makes it soft so it files real quickly. But pick up the file on the back stroke.
i would be so proud of them!

@jettastreetracer angle grinders use lots of cfm. Get a bigger compressor. You may get 30 seconds before it kicks on.
