  • Oh.. I hoped Lincoln was coming out soon, it's due out in Dec 2012! I'm going to be looking forward to that for the next 11 months. : )

  • holy crap he really does stay in character off camera.

  • i dont get it, this seems to be perfect, where's the blooper?

  • lol 2:07

  • I love how he makes a troll face at 1:52.

  • I love how DDL plays Americans better than any American ever could.

  • When DDL offers you a glass. You bloody well take the glass!

  • man i Personally think the Daniel Plainview look is the one DDL should go for permanently

  • he makes me proud to have the name daniel

  • Comparison to other actors is not relevant.

  • @MaddenManification very relevant, for a true actor that was an outtake. broke character for a single second

  • this may have been the hardest movie to edit because DDL's acting is non-stop and awesome

  • Seriously I love how he keeps going just so they have more footage incase they have to splice something. DDL is awesome

  • P.S. I meant to work with DDL but the kid is too cute so yeah him too. :p

  • OMG the kid is so cute!!! It must be amazing to work with him....

  • GREAT outtake lol. Gotta love his acting

  • Can you imagine being that kid! Haha

  • Its amazing how much he transforms himself,he even looks TOTALLY different than 'Bill The Butcher' or 'Christy Brown' or any of his other roles .

  • Mmm... Lincoln... I am in anticipation :)

  • @MrSeduction7 Mmm...yes...as am I.

    :)

  • @MrSeduction7 IT'S GOING TO BE INCREDIBLE.

  • ....@jaiBavet: but even though he looks so different i think that his great acting skills make him atractive. i wasnt saying i hated his character, i love his character and he did a really good job. dont take things so personally man, i understand the movie, i was commenting on his look. seriously all i said was crusty old business man and you flipped out and gave me this speech about not understanding the movie. if i didnt like him or the film, i wouldnt be whaching clips on youtube. RELAX!

  • @jaiBavet: oh my gosh no...youve got it all wrong, i hate it when people have to take other comments so personally. i loved this movie and i understood it completely. what i was saying is that i think daniel day lewis is hot. he looks nothing like he does outside of his movies, he doesnt have a mostache or a deep raspy voice, and hes not as i dont know "crusty" (i think that best describes his look in this movie)...

  • this is one hell of an outtake, hahah.

  • Ha i love how daniel spills his drink on the hat and table at 1:35 he just keeps on going, hes so in to it. such a good actor overall the fact that he can act makes him ten times hotter even as a crusty old business man...ugh i love him

  • @ruggedrugs11 crusty ole business man? this is the true american fighting conglomerates funded by european elite, his anger towards other people is because of their ignorance, weakness, and lack of moral philosophy and respect for true free market capitalism... i feel like no one gets the film

  • @jaiBavet it's not as if the guy's a hero though. If P.T.A. actually intended for the movie to be any reflection of Upton Sinclair's book, or his sentiments, then Daniel is meant to be a greedy monster; Upton Sinclair certainly wouldn't have felt that Daniel is anything but a terrible villain. Daniel may be angry at other people's ignorance and weakness, and maybe even their lack of moral philosophy, but he certainly has no moral center himself.

  • @ShamusMcfitzy well there goes my rationalization for living with myself...

  • @ShamusMcfitzy I haven't read the book, but doesn't the movie turn the entire notion of what a traditional hero is on it's head. I saw this is why it's called "There will be blood." The title indicates that no matter what things go through people's heads for the rest of our existence, there's one truth about humans that will always exist.

  • @Cheshykid well, I would say that all of that is true, but I was talking about the traditional definition of "hero" since jaiBavet was talking about Daniel Plainview as if he were some Randian hero. I think the movie questions the ideas of heroism and villainy by giving us characters, mostly Daniel and Eli, who are doing what they feel is right, but doing it through terrible means. Upton Sinclair's book similarly has no "heroic" main characters, only loose archetypes who embody human flaws.

  • @Cheshykid I think it's telling that one would struggle to find a review that doesn't use the word "greed" in the first paragraph. And if wikipedia and its sourcing can be believed (in this case NY Times Magazine and The Sunday Times of London), then P.T.A. sent Daniel Day-Lewis a copy of "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre", another film touching on a search for riches and the human drive, greed, and morality involved. The two films end up having seemingly different messages, but similar themes.

  • @ranenparry where will he play abraham lincoln?

  • i can see why this wasn't in the movie. it's better the other way

  • @mychannelisgone

Yes, it's more of a testament of his brilliant acting, rather than something that should be in the film.

  • Daniel Day-Lewis gave a stunning performance. He really was *incredible* and so convincing.

  • The man is a damn acting monster.

  • 00:27 is when he realized he's totally forgotten his lines haha

  • Daniel Day Lewis is the best method actor seen on a screen, better than Brando.

  • Daniel Day-Lewis is a real actor, and respects his craft, Marlon Brando was a fraud, un-worthy of screen-time, and should have stayed a stage-actor, or worked the Tom Sawyer Island ride at Disneyland.

  • @12Zwolf Go see Fast 5. It's very entertaining and you sound like you could use some distraction.

  • Comment removed

  • ; Perhaps you should go to Peru with Robin Quivers, and take spiritual instruction, and Ayahuasca, from some self-appointed 'Charmin', and the vomiting alone will distract you.

  • @12Zwolf What's Peru? Is it like McDonald's?

  • ; I will stop this thread as you're quite lost.

  • @12Zwolf You such a pussy. No wonder you don't like Brando!!

  • I absolutely love that moment when they cut, their smiles are priceless

  • Is there a better actor then Daniel Day Lewis out there right now ? If so i'd sure like to know who they are !!!

  • New Scorsese picture with DDL!!! "Silence" can't wait!!

  • @Fred77GGJ Where did you hear this ???

  • @JG129 on Daniel Day-Lewis's page on IMDB

  • @Fred77GGJ Awesome!!! 2013 cannot come soon enough !!! haha

  • daniel day lewis is an incredible actor..up there with anyone

i wanna see him in eastenders taking over the queen vic

    top film..good video man

  • Well why don't you try to enjoy it elsewhere.lmao. If daniel day lewis ever said that to me, i would pick up my luch, take it somewhere else, and try my best to enjoy it!!!!!

  • @1992gabe hahaha amen to that !!

  • The kid was just so cute. And a really good actor, most child actors are terrible, he was really believable.

  • shouldve left the scene in [without the blooper of course ;)] but even without it i had imagined something like this happening, its cool to see this extra scene, i suppose its about time i start watching the special features on my dvds from his work

  • lol love that they both crack up at the end

  • Enjoy your lunch Daniel and we'll try to enjoy ours.

  • Before he starts speaking you can imagine him playing the Joker so well

  • Watch an interview with Daniel Day Lewis and then come back to this and then be amazed at watching a true genius who can transform himself into such a character that becomes the focal point of every film he is in. He could play the shark in Jaws.

  • @JohnnyMac2237 you know you should show more respect to paul thomas anderson. paul thomas anderson is a genius too.

  • @malows1234

Paul Thomas is equally deserving of acclaim. Boogie Nights is an underrated film, Magnolia was heart tugging..I have all the respect in the world for Paul Thomas because it takes a great template and vision to unleash a talent like Daniel Day Lewis.

  • @JohnnyMac2237 of course paul thomas anderson is the kubrick of your time. making films on his own beat and his own style. really a legend in his own right.

  • that guy needs singing lessons.

  • Where did you find this?

    There was no 'Extras' dvd

  • I would prefer Liam Neeson but Dan will be a awesome Lincoln

  • @Gandalfgrey93 dan will be a better lincoln .....liam is good........but dan is excellent

  • you can tell the kid wants to bust up from the very beginning.. he keeps looking around to see if everyone is staying in character which he also does

  • @freedomland11 just read it, gonna be an amazing DDL performance, as usual

  • Attention everyone, Daniel will be playing "Lincoln" google that shit!!! HELL YEA

    Brooklyn

  • Its pinpointed when he slightly grins just as he sits. Its and "oh shit" grin. You can see it in she cheek bones.

  • well take this glass plainview for the win

  • lol take the glass!! ..ddl wins

  • I'm pretty sure I would of left If Plainview told me to try and enjoy my lunch elsewhere.

  • The moral of this story: "Daniel Day-Lewis is not amused by your bullshit."

  • He reminds me of Marlon Brando''s work in The Godfather or Apocalypse Now.

Different characters, but the same method acting.

  • Daniel Day Lews is one of the best actors who's ever lived in my opinion. Certainly one of the most dedicated, if nothing else.

  • Daniel Day Lewis is pure genius!

  • what.......outtake?

  • fucking brilliant!!!!!!!!!

  • W O W it's the first time I see this scene...I have seen the movie at least 6 times and I didn't know there were deleted scenes...Is there an extended version on the film on a dvd ? or is it a bonus ?

  • @Cinemadaptation There are bonuses on the Blu Ray and the Two Disc edition DVD. It's not much, but it's something.

  • @akv1984 thanks

  • as hard as I try I just cannot see Daniel Day Lewis under there. I look at him for a second to see if I can see some of the real him shine through, but then he does something so Plainview-esque and I see Plainview again, lol.

  • could see him as freddie mercury in a future biopic

  • @mcm1345 Yes! Glad I wasn't the only one who thought that he looked like Mercury!

  • @mcm1345 That would be amazing dude. Screw Sacha Baron Cohen. Daniel Day Lewis would blow him out of the water.

  • Its performances like these that put the Hollywood bullshit-hype machine to shame. Not every film or actor can aspire to greatness but they should at least try.

  • I love this character, he is such a mother fucker!

  • WTF thats an outtake ? DDL outtakes still beat most of the finished work of other actors lol. xD

  • @hudson0815 I don't think it was scrapped as useless, rather one of all those scenes that get removed for pacing the film. Watch the so-called "director's cut" of 'Natural Born Killers". It's really interesting to see what they removed, but the movie doesn't get better with those scenes, only more messy. It's really cool to see outtakes on youtube though.

  • I would stand aside this MAN then any other Nation out their.

  • It shocked me to see an outtake of Daniel Day-Lewis existed... Just shows, even he, is human... :D

  • Laurence Olivier, Marlon Brando, Daniel Day-Lewis

  • wow what a difference in scenes...this scene compared to the one that made the movie is crap. shows the fine delicate line between brilliance and complete bullshit. what a great movie...i realized when the movie ended that i didn't move a muscle and watched this character in awe not even blinking my eye

  • I've search on two movie scene; This and the Joker in Dark Knight. And both of them are just amazing

  • @TheLordHodne heath ledger would have been the next day lewis

  • @GarrettJimmy

    Agreed

  • @GarrettJimmy Ridiculous.

  • Man i'd love to see outtakes of all DDL movies. It would be fascinating to see his mistakes and how he reacts after. When you consider the legendary stories of him staying in character.

  • What was the outtake here? I love the movie, but I'm a little bit confused about this.

  • @Jake1993x at the end when the guy says ' he threatened to cut my throat' i think it was improvisation and they all cracked up

  • Nothing can beat this movie.

  • LMAO! why wasn't this in the film!?!?

  • Daniel Day Lewis is such a great actor is literally mid blowing his performances remind me of how Health Ledger (RIP always) could transform into his greatest acting roles, Ennis del Mar, The Jorker etc.

  • Day-Lewis must've forgotten his lines.

  • Theory-- DDL didn't break character when he told the waiter to take the glass. I think that is exactly what Plainview would have said if a waiter didn't take his glass quick enough when he was handing it to him. DDL used the actor's mistake and kept the improvization going. I think he only broke character when Dillion laughed at the standard oil man saying he's crazy (which was probably part of the improv but his delivery was so matter of fact that it struck dillion and DDL as funny.)

  • what a nice guy

  • yeah, it distracted from the scene. maybe if hadn't say it, and just snuff the glass at him it would have work...

  • "Well take this glass." Lol

  • He broke character because of the waiter. He had to tell him to take the glass. Lol.

  • Its a simple scene but it's my favorite.

  • PIMP.

  • A good moment to an albeit bleak existance.

  • I think I may be one of the few people who felt bad for Daniel Plainview. He seems truly tortured.

  • what did the guy say, to make daniel laugh? or basically, why did daniel laught at all?

  • @18ayonuss I think the whole scene was improvised and the waiter not being quick enough set DDL off. Then one of the "Standard men"'s lines "He's completely crazy" I think cracked him.

  • @okstereohead that and PTA says "Cut!" right before he cracks.

  • Comment removed

  • Probably the only time in my life I'll see DDL break during a film shoot.

  • the kid was very professional in this

  • @jolsonator I was thinking the same thing when I watched this movie the other day...the kid did a really good job here playing a deaf kid...

  • All of this was actually improv from DDL. He forgot his line from the start and still its very difficult to pinpoint the mistake without looking at the final cut. He is a true thespian master.

  • @slyester33 Never knew that. He is my favorite actor for sure. My two favorite characters are daniel and obviously the butcher.

  • isn't a thespian someone who studies and performs shakespeare?

  • @fuckapotomis thespian means relating to drama or theater

  • @slyester33 totally makes sense. DDL becomes who he plays, so improv is just another moment in life. (i guess.) btw, i can't believe that kid held his own throughout the entire muffed up scene (gotta love his release when they cut). wasn't this his first acting gig ever?

  • Comment removed

  • hahahaa this is good

  • this is why staying in character on set is very important for actors, it makes the improv so much better and far more realistic because you know what the character is capable of and their limitations.

  • when I first heard the music, I thought Eli was going to come in and annoy Daniel even more

  • Did you rip this from the Blu ray? If so, good job! The quality is really good!

  • It's funny seeing H.W. without that dead pan look he has throughout most of the movie

  • No doubt. He carried a lot of gravitas for a child actor.

  • where did you get this footage?

  • Agreed with this man, where did you find it?

  • @timothy666 it's a DVD extra. One of very few Deleted scenes

  • he didn't mess up. you can hear the director say "cut" at 2:16.

  • they should have left this scene in too i love it !daniel is amazing its so good it doesnt even seem like a blooper!

  • DDL plays such an angry, dark bitter man... and plays it with brilliance..

  • I love that religious song in the movie. It's amazing and I must say rather creepy. It fits perfectly to TWBB.

  • I agree. The film is creepy in itself. I still, after a few viewings, can't get to the root of it. Most people I've talked with write Plainview off as a capitalist, greedy man but, there is more to it......and I keep thinking about it.

  • That is the beauty of Daniel Day Lewis' acting. There is always depth.

  • He was kind of greedy, and in his gathering of all his wealth he just kept losing things.

At the beginning he finds some gold and some oil, but breaks his leg and has to drag himself over all that crazy terrain.

He adopts a son who I think he genuinely cares about, but then the son goes deaf and he loses him a little.

Then the guy pretends to be his brother, and I think that really thew him off balance and convinced him he had no one left.

When his son leaves him he just snaps/breaks

  • I like your comment. I never looked at it from your point of view. Now, I just want to watch it again!

  • You are right, there is a much more.

In psychiatry he would be called a clinical narcissist. He was completely and utterly egocentric, as many scenes in the movie present. (The famous "People" scene). Most people who suffer from this disorder usually are covering up for a major weakness.

In the original script for the movie it mentions he is inf act impotent, and was abused by his father.

Child abuse has many repercussions through life, some of them being callousness, hatred, and cynicism.

  • Thanks for the interesting info. Yeah, if you watch him carefully and pay close attention, there are bits and piece of signs to be scene.

  • lol H.W. laughing was so cute...this was great

  • What's with the gesture he made in front of his face at 1:15? Why did he wave his hand like that? What does it mean?

  • Can't imagine DDL popping up on many gag reels.

  • It's so strange to see him mess up and then laugh. He's usually in character all the time.

  • Talk about good acting, even the outtakes are good enough to be in the film!

  • Exactly! I kept thinking, where's the mess up until the very end but even the mess up is better than what many actors do as their best work. I would freakin raid and pillage and kill just to be as good as him.

  • FORGOT HIS LINE THEN HE IMPROV CLASSIC

  • ha ha testiment to how good DDL is, people on here syaing "where was the mistake","Whats Going on" etc, well improvised all round....if watch the final cut of this scene you'll see DDL forget his line very early on but kept it going as if nothing were wrong

  • This is my favorite movie. The first time I put it int he DVD player, it stayed in rotations all night and most of the next day. I was fascinated. I could not look away. Love this movie.

  • it's very weird watching an outtake for this film. this film is so serious that i don't think real people made this. LOL... hahaha. if you know what i mean...

and DDL smiling, is, well, weird

  • Stephen colbert at 1:56!

  • is he drunk

  • what was the mistake?

  • "he threatened to cut my throat."

  • Comment removed

  • Seeing outtakes of movies like this is really cool, since there's so much free reign and creativity involved, so it's going to look quite a bit different each take.

  • Yeh it's good, it seems very spontanious, the way they talk and stuff.

  • "i can hear you...i can hear you...i said i can hear you..."LOL :-)

Damn!Daniel should play the big bad wolf :-)

  • is the "take the glass" a refrence to Boogie Nights with Luis Guzman and Dirk Diggler doing the 16mm bit on the bar?

  • the scene got messed up at the very start of the scene but they just did improv you can tell that daniel wants to laugh but he doesnt he trys to save the scene

  • So did he like deliver some words wrong, or did the waiter just mess up.

  • I just love the little song in the background.Cracks me up all the time :-)))))

  • i missed it what happened

  • I'm suprised he makes it out of his movies in one piece. The level of commitment he puts into the characters to me seems like it would be too much to handle. I mean how does one not lose oneself, how do you go back to being your original self after being someone else so entirely. It must be terrifying and at the same time enticing to venture into a role with this level of commitment. I think i'd lose myself if i tried being someone else the way ddl does so for that i applaud him.

  • I think that's why he takes so much time between roles

to recouperate from the level of commitment.

  • @goodfellaOS " Method Acting "

  • I agree karinajazmin. To submerge yourself so completely into such a dark character seems like it would leave some traces of that character somewhere inside. Watching him act so genuine and kind during interviews while making the show though makes me think he can handle it just fine.

  • @karinajazmin It's all technique! Some Method Actors see their characters as extention of themselves. For example, Daniel Day Lewis may have invested within himself to bring out his greedy side to show explore and show this character because Plainview is a greedy man. By doing this, they are, in a way, their original self...just extended.

I hope that made sense lol

  • "did i get a chance to introduce my associates daniel?"

"no you didn't and i don't think you need to take that chance"

hahahaha they should've left that in

  • Daniel Day Lewis has the best Daniel Plainview impression
