ohhhhhhhh this combination of Bob Bates and Joe Dodge is unlike NO other ive heard.... Brubecks work is becoming my favorite of all jazz... overnight...
Considering the fact that the album was supposed to be a "loss leader" for Columbia to get the average listener to sample several of their catalog's jazz artists in 1955, it was a GOOD one (I also enjoyed Pete Rugolo's '54 interpretation of Dave Rose's "4:20"). Interesting alternate take here....
I got mine for 25 cents at a garage sale in Columbia, Mo. in 1971. May not have any collector value now, but many of those old 10" LPs do, which could be obtained similarly or even for free in peoples' trash in the 1950s.
Wow, what a superb number ! - in some parts similar to previousgreat versions and in other parts so unique and lovely. This great Desmond was a master indeed ! Many thanks again...!!!
At least 2 takes of a minor blues were made in the first studio sessions after Brubeck signed with Columbia. The first was softer, more romantic, and released as "Audrey", named for Desmond's infatuation with Audrey Hepburn. The second was this, "Makin' Time", with Desmond more bold and aggressive than usual. Interesting comparison, illustrates Desmond's mastery of spontaneity.
Couldn't love this more!

If you want to explain to somebody what "cool" and cool jazz meant in the 1950's, all you need to do is play this track.

Hey, way to go sharing the Makin' Time track. - Jim

It illustrates the fine chemistry dave and Paul had. Who's on bass? I wonder.
PTmayotte 2 years ago
Bob Bates is on bass, Joe Dodge on drums. This is an alternate take of "Audrey" found on the Brubeck Time album of 1954.

I thought it was one of the Bates Brothers, Bob or Norman. Notice the difference between either of them and The Senator, Gene Wright.
