:'))) SNIFF SNIFF... lol i play it a lot slower... o.o gotta practice now :) love this piece very good dynamics!! I love it! Thank you for helping me out on how to play this piece. I personally really love this piece. It's so calm and peaceful. :)
@rubestuh You are right I did not actually look at my CD copy. however the major items (B flat Sonata & Wanderer Fantasy) on the compilation that i was referring to were recorded in 1965 so the point is of course that R was well past middle age. By any standards these are exemplary performances -worthy of note & respect -the nit picking on the date borders on pedantic sophistry and surely misses the point of my comment.
@frogmanpiano Well, yessssss. Your point about the quality of the performance certainly remains and is one that I clearly concur with. But if we make specific but incorrect statements about fact where many can see them, we should welcome having things put right, imo. I would. No sophistry there at all.
@janvkimm I didn't say this was bad. That would be no ears. Or are your ears so fine that you can immediately identify every performer just from the sound?
this recording comes from a R' Schubert CD -he also plays the Wanderer Fantasy as well as the B flat sonata d960 & Impromptu #4 - all recorded when he was in his late 70s -performances are wonderful, good quality sound for that time. R unique cantabile and control of the long line are very much in evidence this CD is still available - acclaimed performances -all music students should study these recording and listen carefully -mentoring in music especially is a cherished tradition
Anyone, regardless of his or her skill as pianist, who talks about "tone" or "touch" bores me to tears and, moreover, I assume that such a person has no ability to grasp the scope of a piece like this.
I'm just amazed no one seems to have turned this into solo for voice or violin. That line is exquisite, and passionate, and strangely, very singable. I suppose it would ruin some of the texture though... I still can't believe it hasn't been done though. Gorgeous work.
@TemperedWell. This is without any doubt Rubinstein. There is also a CD on amazon of these recordings of his that were remarstered where you can hear an MP3 sample of him playing this.
@mvs13I2 Exactly what I thought when I heard it - it's funny, as both Liebestraume and the Impromptu are on the syllabus for the ALCM. I prefer Liebestraume though - but this is undoubtedly stunning :)
He plays that without moving any of the keys! ;-)

Rubenstein - Horowitz?
Two equally moving and yet dissimilar interpretations
Youtube at its best!

This piece sounds related to Schubert's "Im wunderschönen Monat Mai."

You've got it - the "felted tone" yes! that's what I was trying to express. Incomparable!

No recording I've heard brings out the melody enough for me. But this is the best of them in that respect.

@frogmanpiano
The impromptus were recorded in 1961, so Rubinstein would have been 74.

Definitely Rubinstein ... the felted tone, the gentle rubato, the looooong line of the playing.

This doesn't sound like Rubinstein to me.

I've wanted to hear Rubinstein's version of this great piece.
It's sublime.
As always, the tone is so wonderful.
I love the way the soft notes almost fade to inaudibility and yet somehow seem so firmly 'there.'
And the formal sense of the piece has the trademark clarity.

Me costó mucho llegar a esta versión del Impromptu N,3 del Op 90 de Schubert. Es una maravillosa interpretación de Rubinstein
