I feel that this is lovely but an extremely abbreviated version of the song. In fact, it is so abbreviated that it doesn't reflect the meaning of the song. It appears to have been shortened just to have a pretty song to sing at modern weddings. If you want a pretty song at your wedding, that's fine. The original song is not so happy and I miss it. Even the tune is baleful, if you listen to it. Thank you for your posting. It gives me a new version to listen to.
love this, have saved it to my favourites. This song was sang live at our wedding almost two years ago, I dedicated it to the memory of my late parents.
Personally, this is the BEST female vocal recording i have heard yet of this song. And i have been searching and listening to MANY. Although, my second choice would be the version sung by "Celtic Women". Strange though, for many years ive always loved the musical versions ive heard, never hearing the lyrics until about two years ago. And i love it even more.
Hey, thanks for the tip! She indeed does have a lovely voice! But i continue to wonder why this song continues to be presented ignoring the original version? I beleive it is in verse three that it mentions that "no two were to wed" and " i smiled as she passed with her goods and her gear" and "it was the last time i saw of my dear"....cannot remember it completely but, why is that persistantly taken out i wonder? Anyone know?
MISSING LYRICS: "The people were saying, No two e'er were wed But one had a sorrow That never was said And I smiled as she passed With her goods and her gear, And that was the last That I saw of my dear. Last night she came to me, My dead love came in..." ...these words suggest the bride-to-be vanished forever (died) on the way home before her wedding. Not a very good theme for future weddings! :O
@JudeMaris as i recall its" true love " not "dead love" - though as with most folk songs through the decades and centuries words , phrases or indeed whole verses are omitted or changed to sometimes suit the vocalist or occassion. - it sounds to me that this version may indeed have been changed to dead love for reasons only the person who changed the word would know.- maybe this adaptation was a referee to the many losses of life in the troubles of Ireland and maybe sung at a wake.
Actually, I think the "dead" has been a more recent development in this song.
According to the words, any Irish person would know if someone visited in your dreams and their "foot made no din" they were dead. I think this was changed in the song when singing it to other people who would not know this.
I love to listen to you sing Mel, your voice is so very beautiful. This video like all your videos are always interesting and thought provoking. Thanks Mel. 5***** and more + favorite
Nice Version.... Brigid Boden has her beat though. That gal's voice haunts me.

This song seems to be told from a man's perspective. So why do female singers always perform it?
