I just keep watching this footage, and get chills all the time. The best arrangement that I've had the pleasure of watching. First arrangement that I heard. Got me into playing pan! It had everything! Will watch this time and time again! Will never get old.
here did they get their energy from???? lol My Favorite Steal ban, they will always be no in my book, no matter what. Love you Fonclair..... I lived right down the street from them i use to love to listen to them practice. I even use to go outside, and play the drums for them, when the drummer was not their, now i am in the U S A. I must say that that year i thought they were going to win, They will never let a South ban come and win there. They took their crown, they never had another chance.
"Pan by Storm" is a beautiful calypso. Fonclaire really excelled. But, having seen the panorama final that year at the Savannah, I give Renegades the victory.
ayeeee boyy!!!! dis relll besss!! i iz a youth playin wid dis band ryt nw..wish i was born in da timin so i cuda play pan by storm! level bessness here! Fonclaire for life! :)<3
Hhhmmmm.... This is probably the MOST electrifying panorama arrangement EVER EVER EVER EVER! From start to finish. Back to back years (1989 & 1990) Fonclaire got robbed. We will never hear anything like this again along with the soca warriors making a world cup appearance....LOL
I'm very biased to this arrangement because I have been a Fonclaire fan since I was 5 years old plus Professor was my neighbour in Pleasantville and it hurts me to admit it but after listening to both Fonclaire and Renegades ..........the judges got it right Renegades just had more music in their arrangement .
I was there. Before they were halfway through I was in tears and some people began to undress. The crowd was screaming and it was a long time after before they could settle down. From the moment they started; for the full 10 minutes we all breathed as one... Amazing!!!!!!!!! It was absolutely orgasmic.!!!!!!!!!!!
I was there for this one and remember it like yesterday. Before they were halfway through I was in tears as were a few around me, many began to undress and the crowd was screaming, it took a long time for people to settle down after. It will be forever etched in my memory and those present, and yes... they were the rightful winners that night. Prof. You're the best!!!!!!!!!!!
oh man! that's soulfood. compared to this tune the 2010 panorama selections are sooo boring. the young arrangers should study history ;-) and philmore, i hope after a while he will find back to his old level.....for sure this also goes to fonclaire.
This was no ordinary storm. This was a category 6 ,a Major Storm. How fortunate was I to be there to hear it and see its effects . It was pleasantly devastating and created such a storm surge that has not been repeated since by any band. That Panorama belonged to the Professor and his Elite group of Pannist.
This was very exciting to listen to no question. But Renegades brought an incredibly sophisticated & flawless performance to the Finals that night and deservedy won. Jit just had simply more music in his arrangment compared to this one. The right band came in second.
This debate will endure... but if it's any consolation this piece prompted many people to play pan the following year... It was truly a musical war... Cyah feel sorry for Professor though, dat brotha too blessed!!!!
i jus playin peeps. renegades is meh band an i does play wit dem. i love dem too bad. but this arrangement was AMAZING. and deserved first place. i hadda give jack he jacket. from 8:01 my chakras does go loco.
I was a young pup in skinner park and fell in love with this arrangement. No great pan lover just a lover of this one arrangement. My friends were playing while we jumping on the field. I remember it like yesterday. We was sure no one could deny Fonclaire, but POS did. Each time I here it, it feels like virgin love.
It's now 19 years since this composition and I am still feeling the pain for this band....YOU JUST DONT GET MUSIC LIKE THAT EVERY DAY!!!!. I love this piece with all my heart...I still get chills.....they deserved a win back then...but the "steel pan mafia" as I call it always rules...it's just sad.
I have listened to Fonclaire and Renegades again after all these years and I have to say aftter the dust has settled and loyalties aside, Fonclaire deserved to win. Listen to the passion and high drama of the Fonclaire arrangement from the first note... The sweetness of the melody, the cleaness of the transitions.... I can go on and on...
This was a case of 'A South band cant beat a North band in POS'.
This is by far one of the very best Panorama arrangements ever written. Melody is clear, ensemble figures/punches make sense, and every phrase climaxes to the next. This is the first time I've heard the recording from Finals. I can only imagine that the judges heard alignment problems in the performance. Jit's arrangement of Ironman is very complex and so much inner line gets lost. My personal opinion is that this was a better arrangement and will never be forgotten.
see i comments below and I do agree with you. as a 2nd place finish, it's truly amazing ppl still remember it. I don't know any other 2nd place panorama finalists who we still talk about (in the pan realm) other than Fonclaire from that magical year...
One of the greatest debates. I have to say both Renegades and Fonclaire played amazing. The only difference to me is that Iron Man had sweetness as well as fire. But at the same time Fonclaire's fire was 100% FIRE. Fire doesn't always win as this year proved. CLASSIC YEAR FOR PAN.
I have heard this composition thousands of times and it still gives me the chills. I think Jit won that year on rep....both bands played extremely well, but like championship boxing, the champ (jit and renegades) were rocked but were not knocked down for the count, and came back with a flurry of their own, thus the champs retained the title...it still bugs me but here's the thing...it's 2008 a full 18 years later and we're still talking about Fonclaire...now that is what I call RESPECT!!!
The true storm hits @7:48
Great arrangement, I wish they had this one written down so I could play it.
