  • 24 people want to have a traffic accident...

  • my father once said, if i had a car that can brake it self when i'm too close to another car, i will abbandone it in the middle of the road with a pick in the dashboard, ok it could be useful as seen in the spot, the windshield is covered by water and they can't see the guy crossing the street, but if every car turns like that, in no time anybody could drive, and if that sistem will fail, as seen on the demo with the truck, there will be a bit of a mess...

  • @paris2207 1. what is more dangerous than hitting the car in front of you

and 2nd: if you hit the front car then the back would also hit you.

  • Statistics show that most collisions occur at low speeds, my answer.... increase all speed limits to more than 150mph LOL

  • Wouldn't it be better to not act like an idiot while in traffic? Who in their right mind reaches into the back seat while driving? Who shoves a city map in front of their driver? And what total _dufus_ would see a ball coming from the rear-left, and instead of paying attention to how the car in front reacts, TURNS THEIR HEAD to where the ball comes from? All of these people would fail a driver's test, at least in my country. The first thing you learn is "pay attention"...

  • This is pretty nice but how does the city safety works when its raining or snowing? And do you think that city safety could do the job if it is slippery, could it break on time?

  • The people complaining about this technology are the same types who were against seat belts, air bags, and ABS systems. They're either Luddites or they're just not very smart. The rest of us just have to lead them in the right direction.

  • Maybe eliminating natural selection like we do with safety features just breeds more bad drivers ? :P

  • @DJMC5ive Might be... :-P

But modern car technology also helps saving good and innocent drivers from idiots.

  • wait a min if a accident is happen by distracted drivers then it isnt a accident its a crash

  • window needs to cleaned & may not work in weather conditions--- fail! this is a car both of these things r gonna happen

  • "city safety can never replace the driver's attention to traffic..." pure bs.

i'm gonna drive it with my eyes closed and when my eyes are open i'll be texting or reading a book. thank you city safety!

  • @juxtapos99 XD

  • ....why can't the driver just focus on the damn road???

  • instead of making cars heavier and "safer", why not make drivers unstupid

  • @dtihkse but thats depend on the person, and the person depend of genetic... (A)

  • @wengil494 then don't give them the right to drive :P

  • watch another great volvo: eni gabriel volvo

  • this is shit imma go buy a nice fiat punto

  • i like her curves lol

  • Oh my fucking GOD!

Some of you people are really braindead ? "It's stupid that it doesnt work to speeds like 40 or 50 mph".. Don't you get why? If ur driving on the highway and it suddently brakes cuz your driving to close to the front car and cars behind u are driving 50 mhp - what do you think is gonna happend then? If u guys actually had a brain u would probably get why it doesnt work at 50 mph.. ! omg.. !

  • @LollyQPop I would love to see u write that again after u've been smashed between two cars on the highway because you'r car braked at 50 mph with 15 cars behind and infront of you..

  • @LollyQPop well, they may use city safety option off when in a highway of course.

  • What is ignorant is that I don't understand why it doesn't work to speeds like at 40 or 50, not 19 MPH ... And why 19 MPH ? That's a little bit stupid .. Volvo really needs to step up their safety. I mean come on, It's 2010 and we already have adaptive cruise controls in luxury cars ...

  • @LoveTheCity123 its relative speed!! So 18mph is the max. difference between your speed and the speed of the car infront of you.

And fyi the XC60 also has adaptive cruise control!

  • so if i wanna hit someone... i have to go faster than 18mph?

  • @KidThatDoesEverythin u really need an answer for that ?

  • @LollyQPop yes, what if i just wanna hurt them a lil bit & not kill them?

  • Sad thing is that it only works between 0-18 MPH ...

  • the new volvos are unique in design and look great in their own way. city safety should work at any speed

  • What about Mercedes Distronic Plus?

Wow that is amazing: it stops and starts the car autonomously once set, so if on the highway and there is an abrupt queue or full stop and start there is no risk (I've seen this personally happen at low and high speeds, people get in beta phase while on the highway) to bump into cars that have stopped.

I also heard there is an other optional added to this distronic plus that also stops the car if approaching a round-about and someone is coming from left. Chrs

  • @giurgindemilan Excellent point. We were exceptionally impressed with driving up to stopped traffic and having the system bring us all the way to zero without touching the brake once. It's an amazing system.

  • Definetely Volvo XC60 with the system Safe City is the best ever creation for Volvo Cars, Congratulations Volvo cars for your Tecnology Security and comfort.

I Qualify This Video With Five Stars.

    *****.

  • Volvo for live!

I Qualify this video with Five Stars.

    *****.

  • What about the car behind?

  • @Skydivingkittens I beleive the brake lights are either flashed or iluminated during the "pre-load" phase

  • At 0:50, she said, "with a new advanced safety technology that is making people safer."

is she saying that PEOPLE are dangerous?

  • Thinking about this car because of the system and as it is quite nice.

This system should work at higher speeds though! And why not consider people too? Rare but still interesting. I once touched (with no consequence at all luckyly) a guy on the zebra crossing.

Also most accidents occur at higher speeds.

So what about taking into consideration higher speeds and the drivers health condition? Maybe speed related laser orientation and a bluetooth bracelet measuring certain values?

    GG

  • @giurgindemilan DONE!! the all the volvo s60 has pedestrian protection.

  • If they only wouldn't be so expensive :/

  • best small SUV in safety

  • I bought my XC60 with additional equipment 3 days ago, and I regret nothing. BEST CAR clearly!

  • I can see this system producing a lot of false positives when trying to align the car into the center of a parking space...

  • How about PAY ATTENTION put the hot dog, cell phone, cigarette, and dog brush down and look at the road.

  • @turbocanuk Couldnt have said it better myself

  • 5:56

    Oh my G**

  • This system is design for help...no for replace...

  • Drivers should not allow themselves to be distracted ... if they knew that at 29 km/h they will damage their nice new car if they are not paying attention, they would be careful; if they know that there is a system to avoid this, they will become more careless. Think about it: if you had instead of a seatbelt, a dagger coming out of the steering wheel and no seatbelts, would you drive carefully?

  • well i think it helps older people that don't have the best reflexes keep there license longer than they would normal.

  • so older people cause 70% of accidents?

  • @msms300876

Driving accidents could happen to anyone at anytime! If you didn't have sound sleep last night, had just a fight with the one you love, suffered a big losss in stock market, have a flu, just fired by your boss, drank somewhat......etc, then you might not stay very focused on driving. Thus safety features try to shield you from danger or troubles. We are all human, imperfect and up & down in our life, so we need some more additional protections.

  • @msms300876 And it may also prevent anyone - young or old - from injuring someone else, and I think that's a good thing.

  • You can always turn 'city saftey' off in heavy snow/rain/mud if it makes you feel better. My XC60 saved my a** once already. SO GLAD i got it.

  • Does heavy snow/ice or mud infront of the laser affect the auto-break system ?

That system could be a real pain if it activates while driving and you end up in a snow-storm.

  • It brakes only if you drive slower than 10 MPH (16 Km/h)!

  • "City safety will only work between 2 and 18 MP/H"

    6:17

  • But it breaks only between 2 and 10 MPH!! If you drive over 10 MPH it moves just slower. 6:35

And it only works if the wether conditions are clear. 7 :32 It's absurd!

  • It "may", also you must pay attention yourself. So it works perfectly fine

  • good car..

  • Those swedes are so smart:)

  • Statistically, in the US most car incidents are around 30 or 40 MPH. It would be VERY helpful for City Safety to operate at those speeds.

  • @banstaman It would exceptionally difficult for a system to do that because it would have to know that the object the laser is pinging 100 ft in front of you is a building or a stopped car that's not going to move in time. If it erred on the side of caution at those speeds every time, there would be a lot of spilt latte in Volvos on a daily basis.

  • @banstaman It does... Collision warning with auto brake will work at all speeds and will warn with flashing red lights and a warning sound. then at the last second (so you could swerve to avoid) it will apply the brakes to help to reduce the severity.......volvo has been working on an advance collision warning with auto brake system which will brake alot longer because it can detect were cars are and were road markings are...so it can detect exactly where a collision is unavoid and brake early

  • @banstaman ya! i lived in germany and it was fine. when i moved 2 new york it should work at higher speeds

  • @TroyRx They already have it

  • @TroyRx haha tru tru

  • @TroyRx

Yo, think before u talk, racist fag

  • @zl22222222 lol for your information that comment was done from good thinking.

  • @TroyRx So all asians drive like Japanese racer is good thinking? Not every asian got rich parents to spoil him/her

  • @zl22222222 im sorry but it seems im unable to figure out what u are trying to say. lol maybe next time u'll get it right.

  • I doubt it's going to set off laser/radar detectors as it sends a beam of infrared directly in front of the car .. and it's not a substitute , it's merely precaution that can be taken to reduce the chances of a collision occuring

  • I NEED MORE PYLONS!!!!!!!!

  • What if that city safety will stop you car at the busy intersection ? what will happen then ?

  • you obviously didn't watch the video

  • wait 1 and a half second and off you go :)

  • 1. This thing is gonna be setting off laser/radar detectors everywhere. 2. That's gotta be a damn sensitive ABS system for 50% braking capacity. ABS is supposed to shut down below 10 mph anyway. 3. I still think that this is no substitute for paying attention while you're driving.

  • haha Kul å va bakom den när den tvärnitar =)

  • Volvo - leading the way as usual.

    5/5

  • how much is it gonna cost to repair if it does have a collision? i still say onstar is better.

  • i agree

  • agree what

  • im not sure but i think Volvo will repair it for you...

  • Being in the Scientific field and understanding the laws of thermal friction is what helps me understand why the Volvo's reaction system waits until you are closer to the vehicle and does not slow you down. Knowing Science and the studies of science has given me an edge of this subject , When you take the mass of a vehicle and force the resistance of a thermal restriction you need to allow for a decapitation of the mass force, that is why the vehicle does not slow down.

  • I have a cheaper solution have ur kids on the pedals and put a camera on it so ur kid can see and they will apply the breaks aven better they will apply the gas for you

  • you are so cool, i wanna be like you

  • The concept of this is amazing. To all the people talking shit unless your coming up with something better shut the fuck up....

  • LAME!!!!

  • this is pretty pathetic if you ask me

  • ok so you can still get in the accident if you are going 9 mph ok thats safe bull crap

  • I know and it stops the car like 2 feet maybe not even behind the car you're gonna hit! 1st off why does it wait to stop? When it is 18ft. away it should start to slow you down so you don't run into if you're over 9mph! And 2. ok so what if there is a guy behind you and you stop instantly? He's gonna plow into the back of you. They should slow the car to a stop!

  • if it slowed you down when you come within 18ft of another car and your going 9+ miles an hour, then it would slow you down on a high way or free way causing an accident

  • You should NEVER be within 18 feet of somebody at highway speeds.

  • not safe but safer than not having it slow you down

  • How much is that car? 0_o

  • thats buul shit...That is more dangerous than just having it notin.

  • well come to the end of your freedom ppl, if they can do something like this to a car what next control the speed you travel at....

  • wow because if ure going 19 mph if u crash ure die insatntly this thing is a life saver

  • Why the hell did they censorize 'GOD' at 5:55 ? thats stupid

  • TELL THAT BABY TO STFU!!!!! OR ILL DUMP YOU OUTSIDE SHTHEAD!!!! It works... i tried it... you should too!!! and by the way... this is not the first vehicle with the automatic stop thing... there are some out there that are not released

  • borrrrrrrrrrrrrring. if they really want to flash this fancy new technology then mr volvo should put a baby in the back seat with no driver while heading for a head on collision with a brick wall. then it would be remarkable.

  • Why is everyone so concerned about the guy behind you hitting your car. First of all, it's a factor out of your control. Secondly, he/she would be at fault and their auto insurance would be responsible for all damages.

It seems this feature is intended to eliminate/diminish costs by the operator of this vehicle when he/she is at fault in a collision.

Paying for a crushed/ dented bumper is much less expensive than a bumper and radiator, headlights, etc.

  • that is true... it would not be your fault.. it would be his fault... in fact.. few years later, most of the cars will have them..

  • I own many Volvos. Among them are a '98 S70 GLT and an '02 S80 T6. I LOVE my Volvos. But if there's ONE thing I can say that hurts about owning a Volvo is that the things that make the car fabulous are also the worst things about the car. All this wonderful technology they have is EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE to repair when it breaks. And it would seem that as good as Volvos are the ONLY things that break on them is the SUPER expensive high-tech stuff like you just saw in this video. Which makes me frown

  • just a comment, when ur going 2-18 mph, and ur in slow traffic, when the brakes kick in before u hit someone, the car behind u will hit u, which will cost u time, and maybe a little money, it was a cool demonstration, but theres still that problem involved

  • lol now there gonna make something to push the car bak without hurting the vehicle behind... and what if your going about 45-75 mph??? wut if your tires break??? then there goes the trouble...

  • Mercedes is doin the same thing with there eclass and alott more of cool new stuff plus mercedes looks alott beter lol

  • well the person behind you wont be able to react soon enough unless everyone has this car so they should just give this car out for free to everyone... that will never happen tho... or will it... make it happen volvo com' on!

  • either that or they should give out the devices that does that

  • what about the car thats behind this car.. it still gonna get hit... wtf... oh and the guys face at 3:07 lmfao.... hahahahaha

  • one day cars will drive themselves and we could read or take a nap, until then we'll settle for lesser technology.

  • lol at the guy. Oh my fucking god!

  • People, keep your eyes ON THE ROAD. Don't expect the car to do anything else for you. Your car is not smart.

  • Wow. So many stupid people in one place.

The system works for RELATIVE CLOSING SPEEDS of 0-18 mph, so it WILL brake on the highway, say, if you're approaching someone going 65 at 75.

It brakes just moments before impact, so it only operates in situations where the car can react faster than a human ever could.

And what about any cars behind this automatically braking Volvo? If they're driving so close that they slam into your rear-end, then you BOTH deserved to get in a car accident.

  • I 2nd you.

  • how can u fly out of the car if ur wearing ur seatbelt

  • Honestly, why are some of you bitching about it??? YOU CAN TURN IT OFF!!!!!!

  • LOL "it applies brakes at approximately 50% of the vehicle's full braking force and it will only react to cars that are directly in front of you within 18 feet as long as they are moving in the same direction or even cars that are not moving"! JUST GIVE US A DIRECTION BOOK WE CAN READ AS WE DRIVE! it doesn't matter if we're looking at the road or not, our city safety will save us as long as we're moving between 2 and 9 mph! otherwise...WE'RE SCREWED! THANKS CITY SAFETY! NO MORE FENDER BENDERS!!

  • yea ok, i live in the city of L.A. and ppl drive fast big woop u wanna fight about it

  • yeeaa they made this vehicles braking system bad, i mean c'mon it only stops below 20mph, shit ill rather have a vehicle that stops when ur going over 80mph or 100mph

  • Then you would fly out the window, dumbass

  • ya like you would really fly out the window going about 20 mile per hour

  • hmm if that braking system is soo great then can it stop if the car is going over 120 mph on the freeway and is about to crash

  • dont be a jackass

  • Have u heard the first 2 sentences of this footage??

  • Are you a moron. This was made for city driving. If you are not paying enough attention to stop a car going 80 miles an hour at another car or a wall, you're too stupid to be driving. Most people live in urban areas, not shit kicking towns like you're probably from.

  • Will it activate, if it was a windy day, and it fell in front of the radar?

  • It's Infrared, not radar. pay attention, and wind will not interfere with it.

  • Sorry, i forgot the leaf that fell in front of the infrared or radar thing.

  • if it worked pased 18 mph it might be useful

  • nope. imagine u tailgating and ur breaks slam or something....ud be caught off balance. itd be better if an alarm beeped....its only good for like 35mph and less imo

  • Actually Volvo has a system that beeps if you close in on a car too fast - I don't remember what it's called though.

  • Volvo Accident Mitigation System?

  • its in the new amazing s80 v8

  • don't get distracted... i don't see a problem.. Once a white truck ran into back of my car at 50-40 mph, while i was standing on a rad light. He didn't even try to brake: idiot weren't looking. Even if that stupid car was equipped with "city safety" , car wouldn't be able to stop itself. What i'm saying is this system won't prevent major collisions at high speed anyway. What would be useful however, is to block car's wheels after accident, maybe we would have a lot less hit-n-runs.

  • imagine tailgating

  • i think itz great cuz i was goin 2 work in d.c.(if u kno da area there's no need 2 explain) from va about 7:30 in da mornin (in my 08 altima by da way) and hit an xterra at like 10 mph. his shit was fine but i did 5k worth of damage 2 my shit cuz i nodded off 4 a second. my airbags aint deploy cuz u move SLOW AS SHIT. money saver iz wat dis is

  • I'm amazed.

That you can find work in D.C. while having virtually no working knowledge of the English language...

  • Comment removed

  • I weep for our culture if you're a linguistics major...

  • Comment removed

  • I cringe at your ignorant belief that you're defending someone who's somehow "disadvantaged". What you're defending is ignorance. What you're defending is intellectual laziness. What you're defending is "his shit was fine but i did 5k worth of damage 2 my shit cuz i nodded off 4 a second. my airbags aint deploy cuz u move SLOW AS SHIT."

You're simply being a cowardly intellectual poseur and I think you're beginning to realize that... But I sincerely believe you'll have an epiphany and survive.

  • It's amazing how blind you are to the fact that you're the only one assuming any disadvantage exists, proving again my original point.

  • Comment removed

  • Awesome. No more fender benders!

  • If you rely on this to save your ass on the road, goodluck.

  • I think this technology is great. I would definently buy one. Why hasent volvo developed a 4 point seat belt yet?

  • hey how about we just press the brake pedal and lets not make america even more fat and lazy

    just fucking watch the road

  • You are a jackass. This has nothing to do with laziness. ALL drivers get distracted at some point, even your fat ass.

  • haha ok smartass

if i get distracted, i still make sure im drivin straight.

Im not on my phone or doing stupid things while im driving a car

    "useless technology"

  • lol it's for the chicks on cell phones...

  • Is this going to be available in the US

  • I'd hate to be in the car behind the Volvo when it suddenly stops.

  • exactly what i was thinking

  • Nigga at 3:06 looks like dracula

  • lmfao

  • I actually tried this out at the auto show... your wrong btw.. it does it above 18, at least up to 20 (lol I couldnt help myself)

It really odd to be pressing down on the break and have it stop right before hitting something... Amazing ABS, and still rather scary. but does work rather well.

  • um.. cool, but... what if you were on the interstated doing about 80, and the sensor malfunctioned??? And it slammed on the brakes... that would be ugly..

  • Its active from 2 to 18 MPH.

  • Cool, but overall I think it would be better if you just put in sensors in the bumpers so that when you have a collision, the brakes apply fully. That would be nicer in my opinion.

  • Volvo -is- the safest car you can buy.

  • Lol! you guys actually expect a car to brake over 30 KM very fast lol speed counts you know faster you go the slower you stop.

  • ok so if im goin 19 mph down the highway, im gonna hit something!!!!

  • Err. if you think a car braking it self in over 60 KM just like that your wrong the speed needs to be low so the car stops earlier in collisions

  • @masterqueen101

What would it matter if a human or computer stopped the car, the guy behind is still following too close if s/he hits you. And getting hit from behind is much safer than a hitting a car in front of you.

    @osamii324

of course it has GPS the map was just an example of a distraction, and you're taste is a matter of opinion. Besides, this technology is a step in the right direction, and is rivaling Mercedes laser technology.

  • I disagree the would not happen if the car is not going 20 mph but if the brakes are no applied when going quickly the computer would calculate the speed and say its impossible to stop at that speed and not crash With could cause and backward collision.

  • What?

  • the collision would only happen if the brakes were applied to early

  • This car is very ugly, boring, and has nothing appealing to it. and it only looks good in the shit color they present it in. and why is city safety working on between 1-18 mph?? u must be very stupid to not realize where your car is driving at that speed...and does it even have gps?? i like the double interior colors though. but there are more way better appealing crossovers out there now like the Audi Q5 and Mercedes Glk. volvo didnt do too much of a good job on this car..

  • Great feature but Volvo gets a little exaggerative with the paper map at the beginning....I thought a car with features like automatic stopping would have a GPS!

  • sure u may stop and you wont get hurt in the front BUT if you stop soo sudenly then the car behind might crash into the back for you so its saving your life and putting your life in danger at the same time they should think that over

  • who the f goes 20 on a freakin highway!?

  • have you ever been in morning traffic?

  • very true...

  • yes It's also faster then 9mph :P if it would stop from 25 -35 this system would be better

and 9 to 18 slowing down come on it can stop it 18mph isn't fast

A crash at 18mph would be a bump chances are
