i sooo fucking want a glass armonica... i saw this episode a few weeks ago and i was instantly mesmerized by it and wanted one... soo beautiful and i would feel that i had died and gone to heaven too.. sooo insanely beautiful and chilling but heavenly... Ben Franklin was an absolute genius god... screw Pianos!!!! this is absolutely much more beautiful and epic....
Oh how far Western civilization has declined. Hopefully after the country is sold to China someone will be kind enough to play one of these at the labor camps.
@jordanlund so, he was better than most of the presidents anyway. So we should not care about our founding fathers becuase most weren't presidents? he founded the university of pennsylvania, helped with the control of electricity, invented the first fire fighting career, and did many other things. But because he wasn't president, they aren't that important....... shallow
@bubbabob90 Franklin died April 17, 1790. That's one year after we elected Washington. So, yes, he did live long enough to run for President, but chose not to. He was continually being elected President of Pennsylvania at the time.
Lead is now used in making glass to make it more crystalline and shinny.
However, only a trace is used, low enough for use to drink water, although acidic and carbonated drinks, such as champagne and cola, will scrape the lead off, and is highly warned on the boxes and labels of those glass sets.
Mostly, lead is to make collector sets - not for drinking.
Not better glass; in fact pure silicate glass is much harder.
They add lead because it is easier to work with (lower melting temperatures, due to lead), and causes the glass to appear more brilliant (again, due to lead).
and LOL? you should never pour wine (or any other acidic, alcoholic, or carbonated drinks) into lead glasses. Lead will leach, and much as 20ppm (although not much, but still can cause damage that can be prevented) could be consumed.
Great instrument. And I have found many other nice videos on Youtube with this instrument played by a french musician called Thomas Bloch (just write his name and search). This guy also plays another ethereal instrument called onde Martenot (also on Youtube).
The History Channel video mentions a CA glass company. In addition, the Wikipedia article says Finkenbeiner, Inc. of Waltham, Mass. makes them. I also saw & heard this for the first time at Dean Shostak's concert in Colonial Williamsburg last week and he mentioned that he had Finkenbeiner's make his.
What an informative video. I saw a musician from the Philadelphia Orchestra playing the glases version in New Orleans many years ago. Good to know about the evolution of it.
I saw a concert/demonstration of the glass armonica at Colonial Williamsburg a couple of years ago & bought CD's of the music. Both the sound, and the instrument, are very delicate. And beautiful!
$6,000 - Thats really cheap, I want a Viola da Gamba and they start at £8,000 ($15,843) and thats hardly worth playing. Its the old case of make my own! I suggest you research on bells as these bowls lack an S curve so actually sound awful, God alone knows what bell curved glass would sound like.
It's hard to find an armonica to try or practice on, but you might want to try an hydraulophone. The hydraulophone is very similar to the glass harmonica, except that hydraulophone also lets you play microtonally, i.e. you can "bend" each note of a chord independently, to make it sound even sadder or to express other fluidly flowing pieces. Search "hydraulophone" on YouTube to listen to what it sounds like.
ohh wow very interesting instrument........ Where could I find this instrument? >_<

The people who founded this country have very little relation to the pawns and meat puppets that run it today.
Our populace is so dumbed down, that we'll never see an inventor, or a scientist, of even a doctor as president again.

Hate to break it to you, but Franklin, as cool as he was, was never a President. Highest post he had was President of Pennsylvania.

Never heard of lead crystal wine glasses?
Check your glass cabinet at home, and you're sure to find elaborately cut glass, most of this will have lead in it as it makes for a better glass.
