Holy Manshester Terrier!!! i have a 9 month old female Manchester named Pinky. she is 17 inches tall+wieghs 20 lbs. she is very athletic+great at what she does, which is Obedience trials. (whoever wants 2 get or has a Manchester terrier, they r smart dogs and will be great at obedience and other dog sports if trained properly) :)
Not exactly - Toys are *supposed to* have erect ears, and Standards can have erect or button ears (or cropped). Toys and Standards can be born to the same litter - it all comes down to their final adult weight. If it weighs under 12 lbs, it's a Toy. If it weighs 12 lbs or more, it's a Standard. Some Toys have ears that flop. They're still Toys - they're just not "to the standard."
They are Manchester terriers. The toy version is an English Toy Terrier (black & tan) It can never be born to a Manchester Terrier. It would either be a runt Manchester or a mongrel. Only in the US is it mixed and people in the UK , France and Finland have been up-in-arms about these "mongrels" and are avoiding them as "Flatbacks" They are double the weight of an ETT and just chunky. I own 3 Northern UK ETTs and adore Manchesters but they ARE different dogs entirely now
Living in the US, owning a US-bred SMT, I answered per the US standard. My answer is therefore accurate, per the US standards. It may be a different answer for the UK, but that doesn't make my answer "wrong" - here in the US the standard is clear: the breeds are distinguished only by size, and a TMT can be born to a SMT/SMT breeding.
This is EXACTLY the point I am getting at... a small individual DOES NOT make it a different breed ! A chicken has a small chick but it doesn't make it a Bantam, just a runt. ergo toy manchester is not a breed and therefore SHOULD NOT be introduced to our ETT
Originally it came in three sizes, the smallest down to below 7lbs and this became the English Toy Terrier (Black and Tan) with his own history and reputation, the medium or Manchester Terrier 15/16 and the larger 21 plus dog which is rarely seen now. It could have been this latter size that Herr Dobermann used. UK Kennel Club
Further, since US dogs are frequently imported to England for breeding (especially given how the ETT is listed as a "vulnurable native breed"), it's foolhardy to state that any ETT with SMT blood is a "mongrel"... since many US TMTs have SMT blood in them, and many US TMTs are being used to reinvigorate the ETT lines, an increasing number of ETTs have SMT blood in them. You do your own breed a disservice by labeling these fine dogs as "mutts". And your own UK Kennel Club would disagree w/you.
and it is them that the UK , French and Finnish breeders are fighting against The US toy Manchester has been bastardised without the consensus of the responsible breeders. The KC is happy to let deformities rule in some breeds but allow crossbreeding in others. They back people who allow son/daughter, fathe, grandmother to interbreed because thay are champions whereas sensible breeding FOR THE BREED is stamped out by those who perpetrated the imports (also those who reuse dogs over and over)
