If you are an American actor it is only appropriate that you perform Shakespeare using a Standard or General American dialect. And British actors should perform the language with a British accent. What is ironic about your assumption is the original pronunciation (the accent during Elizabethan England) was actually closer to American than British. In fact, its closest to Scottish.
