Ben Elton was a great stand-up act in his day, one of the best!
What a lot of younger people don't fully appreciate when watching this, is that Alternative comedy was revolutionary at the time. It was in it's early stages of evolution here. There was a real buzz surrounding alternative comedy. The sort of buzz normally associated with a pop group, and hasn't happened in comedy since. It was a very exciting time. I was there and I loved it!
Please all you Haters and bloody foreign idiots "Sell out" what the f*ck are you on about (let a lone, what are you ON!). Ben worked on a whole bunch of English Series. If you don't get his humor, then you're either Dead, not English or Both. I find Ben's material funny 15 years later, I still laugh my ass off. (The Puddles of Piss..).
I knew his name was Yappy 'cause he had a lovely little collar on, it said: "This dog's name is Yappy. If this dog should dare to roam, run it over 'cause we bloody hate it!"
*nods head in disgrace* chris rock for the last year or so has been one of the biggest comidians in america!!! you obvsly have no idea what your talking about...
wth?!how can u say that about a comidian? are those people laughing? I'd like to see you come up with better stuff, he was inspriation for some of the greatest comidians out there , chris rock , david mitchell ect. don't try and tell people that a successfull comidian isn't funny because i don't see you with a media analiesation degree and obvsly some people who had one, thought he was good enuf 4 the tele.sometimes when someone tells you something just be understanding about it and dont reply
I can say that about Elton because he isnt a comedian, if he was an inspiration to Chris Rock and David Mitchell its no wonder I've never heard of them. Put most members of the public in a studio, bring on a so called comedian and rather like Pavlovs dogs they'll laugh on cue. ( media analiesation? whats that?)
Not the whole 'yappy' routine and some parts slightly altered for television, but not bad. Much, Much funnier if you hear the whole routine! I clicked on 2 stars as I couldn't click on 2 and a half out of 5.
Cripes, that's not aged well. I love his books and he's wrote two of the funniest TV shows ever but the eighties comedy, when jokes about dog mess was alternative, hasn't aged very well.
aye, looking at his set now for the first time in 20 rs he wasn't very cool, and he still had his posh Shropshire school accent. Or that political really. Despite the "2 Ronnies are shite" gags and then havin Corbett on his last shows. But after watchin all his tv comedies and reading all his books I cannot help but like the guy.
I dont know why so many are focusing on how Elton lives his life or what he does in his spare time/ who he works with etc.,. 1: He has NEVER been a politician & though like many of us didnt like the Thatcher govt. policies,he never said he didnt like ALL their policies ; 2: He doesnt OWE anybody ANYTHING with his viewpoints, also considering that millions of peoples political views modify as times/policies change & 3: its COMEDY for gods sake & not ALL about politics. Finally, hes VERY funny
he sold out....big time. hypocritical little talentless turd. have you seen his musicals ? they are total SHIT. queenkoti, you must have read lots of neuroscience books.........but are you a neuroscientist ? no. you are an insurance clerk. whoopi do.
NO alephnaughtin, i did not admit to seeing his musicals. i am commenting on the art critics views that they were crap. you assume something and your self-righteous little brain turns an assumption into a fact. are you on any medication ? speak to queenkofi shes a trained neuroscientist ! and if she cant help you with your brain deficiency, she can always sort you out some good car insurance !!
"have you seen his musicals ?" are your words not mine. The only assumption I made was that you were telling the truth, and you now admit you weren't. You have exposed yourself as a liar and a hyprocite, as well as very boring and cliched troll.
YES, i have read a book. NO, i havent written a book. there you are, i've answered your question. have you written a book ? on neuroscience perhaps ? or maybe.... insurance.

No, *you* fuck off 1tyresius. I'm not going to have my page disrupted by an immature cunt so devoid of independent thought that they might as well be a fucking Perl script. Your thoughts on Ben Elton are unoriginal, your insults are unoriginal, your troll tactics are unoriginal. I'm sorry, but you're just as much a sheep as anyone you criticise, if not more. And you certainly don't have a divine right to mess up my page. Now, fuck off. Feel free to whine to anyone who actually gives a shit.
Haha, how amusingly hypocritical considering our 'conversation' over on the Elton John/So Graham Norton thread. Wow, you really have nothing better to do with your time than to try and piss people off, do you? Or perhaps you just want attention. You must be very lonely.
Well, sorry, but this is the last of my attention you'll be getting. Say all you like.
It's really sad how Ben sold out. However, it can't be denied that at the time of this clip he was one of a new breed of comedian, cutting edge, a whole host of other comedians have followed him. I saw him in 1988 and he was just as as fresh as he was when you saw him on tv.. Total respect... gotta remember how old Ben was when this was filmed.. 27! he'd already written the young ones and the Blackadder!!
I dont know how you can say he sold out ? Have you read his latest book ? Says more about the ills of society than he has ever done before. I saw him last year and he is still as cutting as ever. Dont really understand what selling out means ? Being successful - making money ? Who do you know in that case that hasnt sold out ?
I thought the experience of watching Ben Elton in a video would be a great experience since I´ve heard audio recordings of his stand-up and have almost wet myself laughing.
I realize now that he is best appreciated when you can´t see him.
None of Eltons mates would have been unemployed. A rich guy from middle classville who put on a cockney accent like Nigel Kennedy and Johnny Vaughan did for street kudos. Gobshites
Ben Elton undoubtedly one of least funny stand up comedians of all time. He's just an intelligent and a safe comedian for the media to praise. He isn't half as funny as the recently departed true legends such as Bernard Manning or Mike Reid.
OK, the "topical" stuff at the start of the clip is poor, but once he gets on with the jobby jokes, it's far funnier than all your favourited clips combined. And as for the dead "legends", wow, what a really "edgy" "contraversial" "stance" you're "taking", Jake27Smith! You must be a "real" "original" "thinker"!
Cool. I didn't know "naff" was the 70's TV equivelent to Fu*k. Also, Ben Elton is one of the pioneers of alternative british comedy, love him or hate him, HE is the reason we had the young ones and the brilliant blackadder series. A brilliant writer and stand up comedian, a true British legend.
Just to wade in here: the above argument can cut both ways, after all, what was Gervais doing when Elton was at his 80s peak with Young Ones, Blackadder, Happy Families and his Saturday Live stand up? Surely we should compare the best of both comedians output for a fair comparision irrespective of a 20 year gap.
I like Ricky, he's quite natural and reminds me of people i know. Who do you think are funny nowadays? there is a lot of crap out there. There seemed to be more varieties in the 1980's. Maybe its just me getting old hehe
Did anyone see that Roy Chubby Brown doc a few weeks back? CH4, I think. Even I was shocked at what gutteral biggoted filth could come out of one mans mouth. Even worse that Jim Scumbo Davidson.. erm well nearly Davidson takes some beating in the Scum stakes.
Yes you could well be right about Scumbo Davidson. How about Roy cun.. Ooops I mean Chubby Brown? Hes been not funny for even longer. It's a shame about Lenny he produced some really stuff, I used to love his jibes at rascist, Magic! Is he still doing comedy? I havent really kept up tbh.
Paul Merton - AVERAGE.. Lenny Henry was funny when I was a kid but I saw a new show in 2003 and I didn't think it was very good. All of the Comic strip are now rubbish (Ade Edmonson is in Holby!! FFS!) There is one comic that has not deteriorated over 20 and thats Jim Davison ... He was always shit.
Im pretty sure that Elton is from an upper middle class Jewish background and he came on with fake lefty stuff in the 80's now he hangs out with Lord Lloyd phantom webber. I used to like Saturday night live, I use to fancy him when I was 10 (Elton that is) Bernie Winters eh? and snorbitz lol Gone and forgotten.
If you compare Black Adder before and after the addition of Ben Elton to the writing team you will no doubt find there is no comparison. Much funnier after the arrival of Ben. Certainly a pity that he has now become part of the establishment and hangs out with types like Webber. Dunno if his lefty stuff was fake in the early 80s. I thought everyone was lefty and anti-Thatcher in those days. No one ever admitted to having voted for the bitch anyway.
No, but lots did, must of done. There was always that trendy middle class lefty stuff in the '80's maybe Im a cynic maybe he did mean everything he said but soured with age. I did find Ben very funny as a kid but hes a shadow of his former self.
Ben Elton is totally shite now. Hey lenny, you wanna real giggle download a prog called paltalk. my nick on there is spiny_mcvitie. I get a room going on there sometimes.

The "hey-ho" thing is from Blackadder. So what I meant was "everyone is entitled to their own opinion when it comes to comedy". I just wanted to innocently join the discussion and side with Elton instead of Gervais, but hey-ho. ;) No hard feelings.
Oooh, this is brilliant! :D I'm going to look for more stand-up comedy stuff by Ben Elton! To join the Elton vs. Gervais discussion: I think Ben Elton is so much better!
