The reason it doesn't sound great is because of the quality of the camera used. Thomas Lang is bloody excellent. Wish the video quality was better. Hate watching drumming videos where the camera doesn't keep up with the guys hands.

you can work with the settings of electronicd drums to avoid the machine gun effect but obviously nobody took the time to set it up for him, these sponsorship artists should learn how to do it and really take the care and effort to set the drum options where they need to be... things like response curve, ratio, gain, sensitivity, trigger doubling, etc etc etc they are gettring paid lots of money for their expertise on the instrument yet they dont know how to tune them in correctly.

It sounds bad because its a camcorder with no headroom recording the PA...in a studio environment these sound as good as acoustics.

Ehh... no they don´t. Gun-shot effect all -over from triggering the sample at high frequencey. Accoustic drums never gives EXACTLy the same note twice which is why the sound is so alive. The only kit getting near is 2BOX Drumit 5 or Toontrack Superior drummer 2.0 software plugin. This since they feature alternating samples when the same shot is hit more than once! Check them out

I would be interested as to whether Lang, as someone who has obviously achieved great technical proficiency, experiences problems with the latency imposed by ANYTHING that is electronic. (I'm sure it's minimal here, but there will be some...)

Interesting point. I haven't heard any complaints concerning latency with the Roland drum kits, but because of his EXTREME kits (multiple TD-20's, 10 KD-8's.....) he might in some way that is barely if at all noticeable. For a STOCK Roland kit and if you were of his caliber, I doubt there would be any. But it's when you add ALL the other things he does.......

Thomas lang is an excellent drumplayer, Lot's of technic in both hands in a good balanced and "timing" combination with his feed makes him a marvellous drumplayer. He is not the only one ofcourse but he certainly belongs to that list of topdrumplayers.
