We just did Godspell at my hs for the spring musical and this was my solo. Epic Fail seeing as I sing soft and we didn't have mics. so no one heard me after I practiced this song for hours on end! still love the song though and was pissed when i found out it wasn't in the movie
Check out my daughter's video @ GodSpell - Bless the Lord My Soul - Samantha Marie Migneault . For some reason I'm not able to attach her video here as a response. Thanks
Heh, My theatre company just did this, and it was fantastic! I (luckily) got to sing this one, and we always had so much fun with the machine part! Our ending pose, also quite epic, always apparently gave people chills from the sheer unity of the cast. Of course, having to end on some religious note, I did a pose of me reaching up with both hands cupped somewhat. When I looked at the pictures I noticed something. I was doing the Tron pose!
@salty7121 No, they thought it wouldn't translate to the screen well. There is a small part of it played during the Prodigal Son scene in the movie. Jeffrey (the guy in the black hat with the raccoon tail) sang it onstage. Same actor.
@megarouge2001 i was looking forward to this song in the movie cause it's my fav in the musical. so i was a little disappointed when it wasn't in there but "all for the best" makes up for it! lol
@HeartsSor11 Good job!!!!! :) that was the musical my school just did. My best friend got Jeffrey and i got Gilmer :P i'ts a great song, and that was the one that ended up getting stuck in our heads the whole time and even now after the play is over :,( i still hear some ppl singing it lol. It's a really fun show and good luck!

Nice edits. I have greatly enjoyed BOTH the movie and the "Original Soundtrack" (from the original theatre score) from which the music here came from. I've enjoyed each for their own "personality" - The movie had the "feel" that the theatre versions I had seen in the 1980's but I digress.
You did a WONDERFUL job on your edit of various scenes from the movie with "We Beseech Thee". very nice, and thank you!
@parkerstage Hi... I don't believe Joanne Thigpen played Maria on Sesame Street.... but you've got the right TV network, PBS. She was the "narrator" per-se on "Where in the World is Carmen San Diego?" -- but she also did a LOT of other TV and theatre.
Still an AWESOME VIDEO!!!! I am just sure Jeffrey is looking down from heaven grateful you did this for him. It would have been his song had it made it into the movie, and you have honored him. GREAT VIDEO!!!!!!! Thank you. I know I say this ever few months lol but I always end up back here.
I was unaware Jeffery lead one of the songs! I knew We Beseech Thee was removed from the movie version, but I hadn't realized he sang it. Jeffrey was easily my favourite of the Godspell cast. Thank you so much for posting this; it's nicely done!
This was always my favorite song in the play...I was diappointed when I saw the movie and they chose to cut it out. It actually took me close to 15 years to even find it on DVD
to NumOneJoeJonasLuver From what I read, the newly added "Beautiful City" made it repetitive to include this song in the movie version as well. But I couldn't agree more with you; This song is an absolute treat to hear, and I'm sure they could have stood to include it; I sure wouldn't have minded^^
@megarouge2001 I saw the show on Broadway in 1974 just before it closed, and it was awsome. Especially since there was a nun sitting front row center and three catholic priests behind me.
I'm the lead part in this song for our local musical production (its actually a review). This is an amazing video. Everything fits. The only problem? I'm a bass. Not a tenor. Haha wish us luck (its in three weeks!) hopefully I can reach those high notes!
@MasterOfDisguise116 Me too!! It's actually more of a baritenor part. I think the highest note it gets to is a G, but it's not held out. I could be wrong though.
@number1thespian I believe its actually a G#. And as time quickly showed me, baritones/basses were not meant to sing those lines ^^ I was able to get an alto on that part for me while i sand melody. Thank god for females...
I was able to see the show on Broadway in New York about two weeks before it closed in 1974. I was 14 and have been a fan ever since. Totally awsome. It is amazing to me that it was Victor Garber that played Jesus. I wish he still did singing rolls. I also have the movie. Great.
@lotrat Victor Garber no longer does singing roles? Geesh, you missed Disney's version of "Annie" about 5 years back. He played Daddy Warbucks! (Surprisingly, the disney version put the Movie version to shame (and I'm a big Carol Burnett fan!)
Such a great song. I wish it hadn't been left out of the movie! And your video is absolutely perfect, I can't imagine how much work went into matching it all up! :)
Yikes, almost forgot about that'un,lol!Since 1973 when I went with a school-group to see it on stage Godspell has remained my all-time favourite musical theatre.Great to see it on here!
THIS IS THEE MOST AMAZING MOST CREATIVE GODSPELL VIDEO I HAVE EVER SEEN!!!! Had they put this song in the movie, Jeffery would have been singing it! you are just amazing to feature him. THIS IS PROFESSIONAL AND EVERY FRAME COUNTS FOR SOMETHING. I AM JUST BLOWN AWAY AND A LITTLE SPOOKED OUT AT WHAT YOU HAVE DONE HERE!!! This should be included on every dvd of Godspell. A MUST FOR ALL TO SEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The match of scenes to the music/lyrics was perfect! The one thing about this movie that's sad to see now is all of the scenes with the World Trade Center towers in them. I pray that nobody will have to experience anything like that again - in ANY part of the world.
This is simply amazing. I have been a fan of Godspell in all of its many incarnations since I first heard the music in 1975. This was fantastic and brought big soppy wet tears to my eyes. Well done.
@mje2k Me too. But it's more because we did it this year and the next scene is the Last Supper, so everyone knew what was coming. Plus, it was our last show with the season. lol
@wilde4200 you've gotta understand that the play itself is from a different time. Basically the hippie generation. Believe it or not, people could actually get close back before the days of sexual harassment. Anyway, if you're referring to the cinematography, it's not written in a way that a movie could actually recreate from the stage. It's probably supposed to be a children's movie anyway. If you can't understand it, I ask you to beseech Him, unless you just want to grow up. That works too.
I've seen just about every Godspell video on YT except for this one, expecting it to be just like all the other poorly edited, low quality cut-n-paste fan videos out there.
WOW, was I wrong- this is absolutely incredible. How long did it take you to find clips that EXACTLY matched the lyrics? However long it took, it was worth it.........
Haha, thanks so much! I had more or less memorized every shot in the film before I made the vid. It took hours and hours to put together, especially with the crappy software I was working with back in 2001. I took notes while I played the song over and over, writing down ideas for what clips to use.
It was done as a tribute to Jeffrey Mylett, my favorite from the movie. This was his big song in the stage show, and they cut it out of the film.
How come the 1973 movie doesn't have this number in it. They did the goat part and then completely skipped this song. Actually it skipped 2 songs. " Learn your lessons well" was the other song. They did that whole monologue but didn't do the song with it !!!!
From what I have read and heard on the documentary, they felt that "We Beseech Thee" was more suited for the live show, because it was meant to rev the audience up toward the end of the show. As for "Learn Your Lessons", I have no clue why they cut it.
@fredj I agree. It's extremely well done. The first time I saw it, I saw this comment, but I had computer problems and couldn't watch it. But now I know what y'all are talking about. I could not have the patience for this work of art. Well done!
Wow! Great job! As a Godspell fan I have to say bravo! The dancing and pictures all went very well with the song! I'm teaching a musical theater class and we are doing this song, i think i'm going to bring this to show my class! Amazing work!
I'm so glad he hit the high note at the end; all this time I wasn't sure if that was in the score or the guy in our production 20 years ago just added it. (So, yep, it's in there--and should be).
I was so bummed this song was cut from the movie. I was in this show as part of the children's chorus and this was one of the only songs I got to sing. All the music in Godspell is soo good! I still remember all the words and it's been almost 10 years! :)
Like several songs in this play, thewords of this scong come from the Episcopal hymnal (1940) and every time I read the lyrics to these songs, I recall this wonderful play that I found just after I dedicated my life to Jesus. Thirty-some years later I still feel the wonderul love of God. I am so grateful to the writers of this play! This play made Him so personal to me. I am now a Roman Catholic, and I love Him even more. And partly I love him because of this loving play!
@SortingHat47 Yeah there are quite a few changes between the King James (Episcopal) and NiV (Catholic) versions of the Bible (thees and thous, etc.., as well as a few Old and New Testament chapters)
. This play is certainly powerful enough for a friend of mine who was involved in a production of this play back in the '80s. She was Jewish, and this play hit her. She did a lot of soul searching, and a couple of years later she was baptised Catholic. Congrats to you too and welcome!
The song was never filmed. The director/producer/whoever decided that "We Beseech Thee" wouldn't transfer to the screen well, so the abyssmal "Beautiful City" was added.
Although the reworked "Beautiful City" with different lyrics is much better.
I had to make a Jeffrey tribute. He was such a special person, and he's more or less an unknown.
@chadortom Yes... notice the cranes on wtc 1 - The north tower was near completion when the movie was filmed. in fact, there's a scene in the movie where they perform on top of tower 2.
Nah it's cool, I can see how my comment could be taken out of context. It was just something I saw on IMDB or wiki and I was just curious. But anyway, I know Jeff Mylett sings this, but the chorus in this version: does it contain the others in the movie, or is this a completley different chorus in the background and Jeff just happened to be singing the main part in this?
Yes, he was gay. It shouldn't have broken your heart, because it's not like you would have had a chance with him anyway. If his being gay breaks your heart, then you can leave my channel, please. No 'phobes allowed here.
@Picardy The "hippie"dom part of this goes a little deeper... but I think I get your humor here...
When you were referring to the "Double Decker Kids", are you referring to an early 1970's kid show (I think it was called the "Double Decker London Bus".. If so, your comment was utterly hilarious!
Umm, duh? A song vid is a fan-made vid. I never claimed it was from the movie. I said it was made FROM CLIPS from the movie, with a song that was cut.
I can understand leaving out "Learn or Lessons Well" from the movie, as that's probably the weakest of all the songs, but this was one of the best ones in the show and they shouldn't have taken it out of the of the movie. But, they made up for it by putting in Beautiful City, which is an amazing song, so it works out well.
Beautifully done!! Great editing!! Thank you for this treat.

Wow!

not sure why theyd. only good song.

I giggled at "Hear thy children's call/Humbly at thy feet we fall/Prodigals confessing all" - clever editing there =D
At least we get to hear a short little instrumental version of this during the Parable of the Prodigal's Son!

Why did they cut this song out? It's the best one from the movie.

SortingHat47 2 years ago
@SortingHat47 Yeah there are quite a few changes between the King James (Episcopal) and NiV (Catholic) versions of the Bible (thees and thous, etc.., as well as a few Old and New Testament chapters)
. This play is certainly powerful enough for a friend of mine who was involved in a production of this play back in the '80s. She was Jewish, and this play hit her. She did a lot of soul searching, and a couple of years later she was baptised Catholic. Congrats to you too and welcome!

Very nicely done. Was the song filmed at all? Or did it not get past the soundtrack?
I love how you made it into a tribute for Jeff Mylett, who sings it.
tlyoung88 2 years ago
The song was never filmed. The director/producer/whoever decided that "We Beseech Thee" wouldn't transfer to the screen well, so the abyssmal "Beautiful City" was added.
Although the reworked "Beautiful City" with different lyrics is much better.
I had to make a Jeffrey tribute. He was such a special person, and he's more or less an unknown.

well written

I love this song. It's absolutely fabulous. What I don't understand is why they would cut it out of the movie. :[

right at 1:12 are those the WTC's? in the backround
chadortom 2 years ago
Yes, those are the twin towers. They were being finished right around the time this was filmed.

:-( *tear*
chadortom 2 years ago
@chadortom Yes... notice the cranes on wtc 1 - The north tower was near completion when the movie was filmed. in fact, there's a scene in the movie where they perform on top of tower 2.

hockeyfan7125 2 years ago
I'm sorry, you didn't deserve that. My apologies. I was fighting with someone else, and my mood affected my reply to you.
megarouge2001 2 years ago
Nah it's cool, I can see how my comment could be taken out of context. It was just something I saw on IMDB or wiki and I was just curious. But anyway, I know Jeff Mylett sings this, but the chorus in this version: does it contain the others in the movie, or is this a completley different chorus in the background and Jeff just happened to be singing the main part in this?
hockeyfan7125 2 years ago
it has Robin Glimer David and Joanne but thats it
14coldplay 2 years ago
I love Jeff Mylett. It broke my heart when I found out he was dead (and I heard he was gay?)
hockeyfan7125 2 years ago
Yes, he was gay. It shouldn't have broken your heart, because it's not like you would have had a chance with him anyway. If his being gay breaks your heart, then you can leave my channel, please. No 'phobes allowed here.
megarouge2001 2 years ago
No its not like that at all, all I meant was that he's not around to do anything else which is heartbreaking.
And I'm not a homophobe btw.

This is like if the Double Decker kids took acid then got religion.

@jdenicol That's it alright! Life should be just like that (to a degree).

The song is on the original off-broadway cast recording. It's sung by Jeff Mylett.

I'll send you a PM with the link at Amazon. This song is on the CD of the original cast album from the stage show.
