Oh, and stop dissing The Golden Compass! The thing grossed well over $200 million overseas. It may have underperformed in the United States, but those numbers hardly suggest an uber-flop. Now Speed Racer...that's an uber-flop. :p
I'm really starting to dig this new show, but I can't help but think of Wayne's World's extreme close ups a bit. Why the tight shots, Grace? Also, I second the commentor's disbelief at the fact that Four Christmases cost $80 million. Huh?! Where did that money go? I'm assuming it went to the stars, but are Vince and Reese really worth that kind of money? It just seems ridiculously excessive at a time when so many people are just trying to make ends meet.
OMG!!! heath ledger got a nomination for the golden globes???
im not that surprise because he deserves it.. he deserves an OSCAR. which i hope he'll get even though he's dead. but getting a golden globe is good reassurance.
i personally loved the twilight movie even though their budget sucked any almost everyone else hated it. i know that NEW MOON will be way better when it comes out next year
I totally agree with you about the day the earth stood still.
BTW, when you say your name you don't same your last name very clearly. If it wasn't for the fact you put it under you when you do the intro, I would have sworn you name was Grace Reynolds. Just a suggestion! I love your show! Just remember Ran-dol-ph
I couldn't agree with you more about The Dark Knight, Grace, especially considering it was better than Frost/Nixon and The Reader, both of which managed a nomination (both were pretty good films but the acting stood out more than their entire films).
But, of course, THOSE movies are serious, self-indulgent, DRAMAS. But the Dark Knight is just a comic-book movie. There's too much politics in the award-show world. I believe movies are nominated and win more because of who's involved, and how snobby the plotline is. Oooh, a serious dramatic movie about a president! Nominate it! Ooh, yet another period piece related to WWII Europe and Nazis, and it has romance! Hollywood has made enough movies about WWII -- time to do the untold stories!
Such things as this is why I was never interested in any award shows, whether it's the Grammys, the Oscars, the Globes, or the American Music Awards. They're just big shows -- especially the Oscars -- for and by rich people, in big, moneymaking industries. A night for these people to pat themselves on the back. There's too much politics, marketing and business dealings going on. If a movie's not a self-indulgent drama with a disabled main character, it won't win, especially with the Oscars.
thanks for that mention, Grace. I was off by 1 million! LOL. Honestly it was just a lucky guess, and I was not expecting to be correct. I looked at boxofficeguru, and he had it predicted at 48 mil. I thought TDTESS just didn't look that interesting. TDTESS might have opened with low numbers, but it probably won't have long legs at the box office.
And I think Summit is trying to kill the Twilight franchise. They're rushing to get 1 movie a year. This isn't SAW or Hostel.
It's calling paying the big-name actors, which you would think that by now Hollywood would know that most moviegoers don't really care about the stars. They often don't follow a star movie to movie. It's movie first, actors second, if not third.
The Heath Ledger tragedy aside, people didn't go see Dark Knight again and again because of the actors. Same with Twilight. They're not going because of the actors. There are many flops out there with big names all around.
But not Ledger alone. I should have been clearer in my post. That's not to say that stars never attract people to a movie. Of course they do. But not all the time. There are many flops for many stars. Tom Cruise has a bunch of flops, probably more than he has hits. Nicole Kidman's a "star," but look how many flops she has. Ledger's death did attract many, but Ledger's also acting in a good movie. I saw DK four times because it was very good, not because of any one actor.
Also, there are many bad movies with good parts in them, and those don't bring people back for repeat viewings. And there are also well-written roles that are delivered poorly, just as there are badly written ones delivered well. If Ledger did a good job with an otherwise poorly written role, he wouldn't have gotten the kudos he's been getting.
Hollywood is full of movies, overstuffed with big names, but they flopped badly. But Hollywood doesn't like to talk about those.
I read an article about some of the biggest flops, and it included the animated movie Delgo, which made a whopping 511,920 bucks in its opening weekend, while playing at more than 2,000 theaters. Its voice talent includes Jennifer Love Hewitt, Val Kilmer, Malcolm McDowell, Kelly Ripa and Anne Bancroft. And then there's the recent movie Deception, which starred Hugh Jackman and Ewan McGregor, another flop. I love how studios will blame all sorts of things for a movie's failure, except for stars.

I adored both Golden Compass and Australia. Nicole Kidman is brilliant.

I too, am I appalled at Dark Knight getting cheated out of the golden globes.
I thought it was the best movie of the last five years, and I know I'm not alone.
Sidebar: Grace, you're awesome.

how did a movie cost 80 million to make?
INS1cells 3 years ago
Dude, that's even on the CHEAP side for a major movie!
BeyondTheTrailer 3 years ago
yeah but it's not like it had a ton of vfx or huge set pieces. 80 mil seems like a bit much for a comedy.

disagree.. Ledger was a huge part of why people liked Dark Knight. actors are a huge part of why movies work.
