That's the kind of guitar I wouldn't allow myself within 10 feet of for fear of accidentally destroying it in a phenomenally stupid and clumsy bull in a china shop episode.
Are some people people stupid? They ask what song he's playing right after Phil said "Lets see if we can do American Woman with the neck pickup of this guitar"
PHIL DID THE GUITAR PART FOR THAT SONG ? :| NO SHIT ? Daughtry - Is not over :| i fucking love that song ......... now i love it more :))) good job PHIL
Phil and Frettedamericana, your videos make me so happy! I love watching and seeing all the different guitars! Thanks! If you guys respond i just may have a seizure.
I own one of the remaining 11. I think mine used to belong to BIlly Thompson guitarist for Hank Thompson back in the early 50's. Definitely one of the finest electric instruments I've ever owned/played, and I have owned plenty. The laminate top is actually a design feature to keep it from feeding back, like some of the carved top archtops I have used do. The middle pickup is wired out of phase to get that T-Bone tone too. A great instrument.
Phil X is definitely a rocker not jazzer. But the good news is this guitar holds up very well in any of the things played by Phil. And demoing it in jazz mode only wouldn't do it justice either.
The people who are interested in buying these guitars are vintage guitar collectors with lots of money and professionals who know what they will use the guitar for. These videos are just to show the instruments in action in the hands of a very capable player, and most of all for the fun of it. Also, frettedamericana are not going to go out and hire new guys for each guitar to suit the "style." You can do whatever you want with your own vintage guitar store.
I think Phil should have had a short back and sides haircut, worn a 1940's suit, trilby hat and spats before being allowed to go anywhere near that guitar. This is because only people who look like that should be allowed near a 1940's guitar. Forget 'evolution of ideas' and all that guff because all the critics who play '57 reissue Strats obviously try to look like B-movie cowboys! Can't you hand tint the film too?
Phil X, you're clearly a pretty good rock player and an entertaining character to match, but a guitar like this needs to play jazz. If someone showed you a Dean Razorback through a Triple Rec and only played country music on it, do you think that would be a fair demo?
If you don't know how to play jazz, either learn or find someone who can.
Second I clicked on the video, I thought to myself, "Self, how much do want to bet ol' Phil won't play music the guitar was designed for, instead he'll enlighten us with yet even more of his vast knowledge of 70's classic rock riffs?'
Phil's a good guy, but I'm not sure if he's aware music was actually made by people before 1965.
@bugsycline It's not that he can't play the guitar, he can't play jazz. He is a really good guitarist when it comes to rock. I know what you mean though, it is always nice to hear the guitar been played songs of the musical genre in which the guitar was designed to play.
@bugsycline What the hell are you talking about guitars with p-90s are pretty much made for high-gain and feedback tricks that's what makes them so cool just because hollowbodies were designed for jazz doesn't mean that's the only style you can play on them that's just being closed minded I thought what Phil was doing was great I do that kinda stuff with the p-90s on my sg all the time
Man... I love the fact that you have priceless guitars and you're having fun with it...jamming out to Thin Lizzy on a prototype 1949 Gibson is pure rock. You rule.
I assume you mean when he plays it with distortion, and that's because a big hollowbody w/ P90 single coils will feedback as soon as you look at it. It wasn't built to be played that way, but some people make it work. That's a beautiful guitar with a beautiful tone, but you can certainly make it sound "ugly", although many would also call THAT beautiful.......:)
hey man, i didn't write the song. according to most songwriters, it's just a riff. the song needed an intro and i came up with that on the spot which is my job. it'd be nice for royalty purposes if it was considered songwriting but it's not.
The first strums at 1:16 sounded almost just like Wire's song "Outdoor Miner". 3:35 Is a great guitar part too, I didn't notice this before but the Message In A Bottle guitar riff also has a similar effect that 3:35 has. Great demo!
i got an es125 that looks like it predates the production ones... no serial number, and a pickguard on left and right handed sides... really tall volume and tone, and the trapezoid talepiece does not have the diamond shape thing on it... p90 with adjustable pole pieces, and the back is arched... i need help ppl!!!!!
If you really want to use You Tube to sell this guitar, I would recommend: (1) less talking and more playing; and (2) featuring somebody who can play the kind of music people who would buy this guitar are interested in playing (hint: it's not The Police or The Guess Who).

Bands don't always write and play everything they do.
The Beatles called in Clapton to play on While My Guitar Gently Weeps, the Eagles played songs that were written by or with the help of Jackson Browne and J.D. Souther, Sting was in the studio when Money for Nothing was recorded and he came up with the outro vocals that sound a lot like Don't Stand so Close to Me. The list can go on.
I think it's cool when a band is open minded enough to call in musicians to give a different perspective.
