  • english 30-1 woot woot

  • why does the door say colored? does that mean its a clinic just for black people?

  • @leenzin The story is set in the early-mid 1900's, in Mississippi. Back then, the South was still segregated between blacks and whites.

  • If the grandson were dead, why would the medical professional (the nurse) feed into the woman's delusion by asking how his throat was doing? It would seem that by aiding in this manner, it would put the elderly woman through more unnecessary treks through unsafe territory. Can an English teacher contact me and give me their opinion?

  • @NverEnoughDeathMetal Ahhh yes, ignorance is bliss. Writing is overated anyways. Thank you for your valuable comments.

  • THANK YOU FOR POSTING THIS STORY IT MADE IT A LOT EASY TO UNDERSTAND MY CLASS IT IS VERY SAD I HAD TEARS...

  • on a scale of 100 how close is this move to the book?

  • @monkeyboiz1 eh they cut some lines but it's pretty damn close really close to how i imagined it as reading it

It's only a 6 page story not to hard to read if you can focus

I have class in 4 and a half hours so i'm trying to understand it more

  • @monkeyboiz1 I would say really close near 100 it did not add anything new. just brought the story to life.

  • @Nique414 like back den u kno how they recognize black men as "boy" so im figuring maybe thats way.. dont quote me on it

  • such a fucked up story

  • Lovely video. Catches the spirit of Ms. Welty's wonderful story. Thanks.

(I'm amazed at the immaturity of many of the comments here.)

  • I am student of American Literature, I found this video for my class and I have to add that I love the 2 parts. Thanks for making this effort for us.

    Grace Casal

  • thanks... dman... the written story was too long

  • Thank you for this video. I still do not understand what they say. cuz i m deaf. but i watch what they do and act. lol.. it would help me little. I have to understand A Worn Path what it talk about because the student and i will discuss about it in my english class.

  • The thing that doesn't ring true to me about this story (either this movie or the story itself) is it shows white people mostly being civil, in those old days in the *South* no less, to a black person. The only "heck" she got was the hunter, and even he wasn't that mean to her! lol So I wonder how realistic it is.

  • i liked this video quite a likeness to the story, without the forest trek that is so symbolic. She is like the phoenix bird that crashes to the earth to be born again beautiful and golden. Is this the symbolism? how many others symbolism?

  • It is quite possible that this senile old lady made up a grandson, out of loneliness. However, I think her grandson has already been dead. We have to pay attention to her name, Phoenix, which made this story even more profound.

  • Yeah that's possible. It makes you wonder why she gets the medicine then. Maybe I'm slow... lol

  • Nah, the author said the short story was supposed to be straightforward. She thought she had failed as a writer when she heard people had wrongly misinterpreted the grandson.

  • It would have been better if it had zombies and space ships in it.

  • This is such a powerful short story!

Some people say that Phoenix's grandson is dead. Others believe that he is at home alive waiting for his medicine.

In a class discussion about this short story, my professor said that Phoenix's grandson was made up. Old Phoenix does not have a grandson! She even forgot about his existence when she was asked by the nurse how he was doing!

What do you guys think of that? Do you agree or disagree?

    Thanks!

  • not even gonna lie, Phoenix looks a bit like E.T.

  • Thank you for posting it, it really helped me get this story!

    =]

  • My class just got finished reading this story. This video will help tremendously. Thanks!

  • Thank you for posting this classic. I love your videos.
