On the other hand North Vietnam had an outstanding amount of desire and drive to win this war and would have done anything to win and would have fought to the last man standing in all battles. The US was not committed to the war in Vietnam, the people were divided and the govt never gave the troops the full support on the ground. The US govt wanted millions of dead NVA/VC but never supported the destruction of North Vietnamese army, it seemed they wanted the war to last as long as possible without pushing WW3 and without winning completely. That was the strategy, keep it going without any victors.
