  • a all life to learn to play

    respectfull

  • BEAUTIFUL, I can just close my eyes and forget my troubles :)

  • gosh i cant tell the difference between the sound of a sitar and a sarod.

  • Imagine her getting as old, blessed and active as her father, Ravi, it would be wonderful to see her greyhaired and wrinkled and as happy as she is now:)

  • @DechenPalmo

enjoy live every very moment and do not think about other people's look, when you are a going before.

  • no wonder the beatles go into this... its amazing

  • watch how anoushka meditates into her music, she is playing the rolls royce of guitars, the lowly sitar... if we all loved this devotedly, we could change the world

  • All respect and bowing for music that does not try to entertain us with trivialities and mundane 'superficialities', this brings us back to what we are : connected beings - and no dogmas needed but human soul and depth

  • cool music

  • It is mandatory to not be wearing shoes when playing any of these instruments?

  • @MaseratiChris556 Yes... it's respect for the stage and the instruments. At least that's what I know :)

  • I understand how the sitar is played but the tabla is a total mindscrew. I can play drums and bongo/conga but the tabla is out there. Amazing video

  • Quelle merveilleuse musique !!!! Merci, merci !!!

  • fucking druggies...

  • @Dandidodos of what and who are you referring to?

  • gives me butterflies :)

  • OK, maybe somebody's asked this already, but: Is that drummer related to the drummer who played with Ravi at the Monterey Pop Festival (in '67, I think)?

  • @emncaity Nope! The drummer (tabla player) at the 67 Monterey Pop Festival was Ustad Allarakha, the father of tabla maestro Ustad Zakir Hussain. The tabla player is Tanmoy Bose, another brilliant musician from Kolkatta (formerly Calcutta) in eastern India.

  • @AnandSuresh

Thanks for the info. They looked vaguely similar in the face, and to the uninitiated (I'm a musician and have done a lot of percussion in addition to other instruments, but I'm not an Indian musician and am familiar with these rhythms only in a general musical sense) some of the sounds seemed fairly similar.

  • @AnandSuresh

Incidentally, the reason I was even at this vid was that she's doing a gig here in town later this spring, and I was trying to figure out whether she'd be worth the ticket price (it's not expensive).

  • Can someone tell me what does the asian guy plays with his instrument? What is his function in this video? Also in Monterey's Ravi Shankar video is a lady playing same instrument smoothly but I don't understand if they put rhythm or something like that, I appreciate any of your answers.

  • @jessaigh its called a Tanpura.it provides drone to the performance and gives the artist a reference frequency to keep himself or herself in tune.

  • @prithwin Thank You, very clear :D

  • Anoushka is a true master of the sitar, an instrument of infinite complexity, requiring extraordinary technique, golden ears, strong fingers and the ability to hear and play simultaneously whilst opening your heart to waves of energy and stillness. Her beautiful spirit fills the auditorium and her playing takes me to the edge of the universe. Shanti.

  • @philhayhoe1 Wonderful comment. Thanks everyone!

  • @philhayhoe1 One of the most beautifully written comments on any forum ever! Thank you.

  • @philhayhoe1 .......nice comment....i agree with you....i'm novice but i appreciate.....namaste

  • Very beautiful, I love civilized people and high culture.

  • Damn that's one fancy banjo .....Very nice too:~)

  • absolutely amazing,,one of the finest musicians on the planet..wow

  • I wonder what is more accountable towards making a musician successful; is it the fact of how much popularity or money one can earn or is it the true fact that he/or she can touch a man soul and purify it with the music they play? This is like my sanctuary where i feel most safe, touched by God & most true to myself, the person who I really am and not furnished to stand fit in this materialistic life & society.

  • At 10:46 is it the man on the base(- sitar) ??? Beautifull music !!!

  • @fraschra It's a Tampura (or Tambura)

  • @cmvb Sorry, I made a joke. What we see is a Tanpura and it's really a kind of base instrument. A Tambura as you say is a different instrument (also with strings) from makedonia and bulgaria. ;-)

  • awesome answers to my question!!!! thank you all !!!! it just looks so intuitive when they play .. i am over 45 and can hardly wait to learn a guitar ... i played the tablas as a young guy, just picked it up and did it in a chanting group, no lessons at all LOL

  • thank you, from the heart, for posting this .... there is so much i avoid on youtube, mean people, awful comments, but sometimes people connect straight from the heart

  • thank you for the responses! i am dreaming of playing music ... over 50 and never really explored it! much love from the heart, to your responses to my plea ... LOL

  • This is awesome.

  • can someone please tell me what goes on inside, when musicians connect? when they look at each other, and they just know its what they wanted, or maybe it is perfect

  • @ramfree27 Great artists playing in a group non-verbally communicate with each other onstage- knowing the score and form they are able to communicate as they play.

  • @ramfree27 Musicians can sort of feel where the piece is going and when good people play together they sort of link up. I jam some jazz stuff with my mates and we just play and it works out nicely. It does take a great deal of practise and improvisation is a completely different skill to learning and replaying a song. Try it out :D

  • @ramfree27 It is also one of the best feelings in the world.

  • @ramfree27 it's like when you are playing with a child, and you are on the same wavelength even though the child can't speak yet.

  • @ramfree27 when they smile, it means the tune is perfect.

  • @ramfree27 It's one of those things where you really have to be a musician to know wha tbeing "in the zone" is.

  • @ramfree27

yes, the perfection and beauty is shared in that eye contact

  • @ramfree27 Like SnapShotsmusic said: With this particular type of music, they most likely know the composition, so that helps. But there is that place to connect. I'm not sure it can be explained, and I've been there. Even though it's powerful, I don't really think it's profound. Like sharing a heart. You can find it in anything you practice with joy. Even just cleaning the house or riding a bike. Just have to cultivate awareness.

  • First heard this played by Ravi in 1957. Very impressed with her version!!!

  • no one will never understand how that instrument works

  • Meditating spiritual music and amazing performance ,incarnation

    of the wonderful Indian culture.

  • ultimate performance madam

  • so soothing relaxing music..I love it.

  • WAH WAH WAHHHHH

  • Indians didn't invent love, but they certainly perfected it

  • Супер!!!!!!!

  • hatunun elindeki çalgıya bak la . ne kadar fena

  • this type of sounds is all sounding the same exactly but is so fantastic i feel like im bathing in the ganges right now

  • She's a babe! Where can I sign up to be one of her roadies??

  • Are Anouscka and Norah Jones related?

  • @Dreamofthereturn They are half-sisters

  • @Dreamofthereturn . Ravi is their dad. Different moms.

  • This will always remind me of Mario 64

  • YOU GET ANY DARNED KORG YOU WANT AND NOTHING CAN EVER COME CLOSE TO THE ACTUAL INSTRUMENT. I play the violin and I've tried reproducing the sound on synths and you never get the same feel. Besides, LOOK AT HER. She's grace personified.

  • ... éxtasis de eternidad... como una canción de cuna nos mece, nos mece...

  • LIKE FATHER LIKE DAUGHTER , ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL .

  • zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

  • Maravilhoso puxou o seu Pai Ravi Shankar, o Mestre da Música Indiana.

  • You can be a master of golf on Wii doesn't mean you know how to play! Synth/Keyboard and triggers are for lazy people!

  • I had one long falling out of my chair during the part 4:53 to her dazzling smile at 5:55. This made my day!

  • THIS IS SO BEAUTIFUL! I LOVE IT!

  • @Elywells Synths can never replace great artistry.

  • @SnapshotsMusic totally...

  • @SnapshotsMusic I agree and nothing can replace the ancestral sitar music... it's magic.

  • @Elywells man,,, are you nutts ? u can replicate a guitar for real with synths, u think u can replace a sitar ? O_O

listen a bit more closely now will ya ?

  • @Elywells Not quite. To the untrained ear maybe. I work with midi instruments and nothing beats a live string player, whether sitar or violin. The subtle phrasing, timbre, texture and nuances of a capable acoustic stringed instrument player are of infinite variety. Some hack hitting samples on his keyboard doesn't compare.

  • @Elywells No, it sounds like dragonflies. The same reason why you may play guitar instead of the synth "acoustic guitar" sound, on a keyboard.

  • Excelente¡! te trasmite fuerza y paz, Anoushka una ves mas pone en alto su apellido!!!!!

  • Listening to this on headphones. Nice sound! Great playing too.

  • she's not of this world....i must make her my queen

  • Spectacular! At the end I let out my breath! I'm sure I wasn't holding it in for the whole eleven and a half minutes, but . . . . .

  • Is she single, I propose marriage!

  • @Henrythepatriotic she is married and live in London

  • pociagajace

  • Rich

  • wow, this one gave me goose bumps :o apsolutely amazing...

  • wow...this is absolutely beautiful...makes me wanna go smoke some good reefer, right now.

  • @ugotbawlz

You are funny! I was thinking instead of meeting her at the "no tell motel!"

  • Wonderful!

  • all I can say is, wow!

  • Effing amazing.

  • Amazing!

  • There should be a game called "Sitar Hero". The only problem is that Easy would be faster than Expert in Guitar Hero.

  • Fantastic ! How happy I am because I cound find this YouTube. I am so deeply imressed !!

  • this is so soothing yet upbeat! xD I wish my Iranian uncle was still alive.. He could have taught me how to play.. ;__;

  • 5:00 Shred the zitar

  • Very energetic and serene at the same time ^^

  • No words!!! Great!

  • :) muito boas vibrações ...

  • ..good vibrations *!*

  • No me gusta para nada, porque prevalece la mente sobre lo suve y sutil, ella no merece el citar.

    }

    she dont like me.

  • she´s an angel!!

  • The most beautiful piece of music I've heard in a long time - thanks for posting!

  • EXPLOTAAAA EL NIRVANAAAAAAA

  • Is it just me or does the opening sound like "Send in the Clowns"? Isn't it rich? Aren't we a pair...?

  • I always find it interesting that apparently the soul crushing reality of life is so overwhelming to many that the ability to enjoy a beautiful piece of art is objectionable to the form of trolling all that exists simply because they can. We all get one ride and for us it was a wonder to behold such an individual that can from that reservoir of the soul give to us but a taste of magic.

  • @1126thmp You lost me at "objectionable" from there you make no sense. Good try though, your English can only improve.

  • she's talented and pretty! wow!

  • Truly amazing,,her father taught her VERY well!! ^_^

  • wow she just as beautiful as her playing

  • waaaaaaaaaaaaa

  • breathtaking brilliance. I real privilege to have this on youtube, thank you.

  • @owlertheprowler lolzz

  • i luv all the u tube haters! just move in with guru...any clasical musician can do that!!?????WTF these fools cant even play with themselves rite let alone stand up to a legend!!!!!!Thats my girl yur talkin bout, go back to plain magic cards or sumthin........

  • Beautiful music. Beautiful lady. Beautiful!

  • Superb talent between the sitar and tabla's ^_^

  • @Afgooyee. I'm American and even I'm just about 100% sure they have Sitar classes in London. Don't you guys have a lot of Indians in London.

  • heart just flutters listening to this ..... i m floating here

  • I am not an asian but I love to learn how to play sitar and tabla exactly like the way Anoushka and gentleman are playing...I live in London and would like to know if there is any classes they teach Indian music in London. anyone knows about it please let me know it? Thank you

  • @Afgooyee If you want to learn the sitar the way Anoushka is playing, you move to India, move in with a guru, become his devoted student and study one instrument for a few years. Then you might get close, at some point, to what can be seen here.

  • @Afgooyee Search on internet..u will find somebody.

  • well said jettimania, pretty much says it all...

  • pure awesomeness!!!!

  • 16 insensitive

  • Awesome, completely, totally and utterly, capital 'A' Awesome. I'm almost lost for words. Anoushka has always Impressed me with her skill & obvious talent, it's always a delight to sit mesmerized by her wonderful Incantations, I am Intoxicated & High on her Sitar playing. She is so adorable, and a wonderful peaceful human being too. God bless her, and her Amazing Father, 'Ravi' for teaching her the precious art of Sitar playing. Ciao...☺/ Angeli Santi

  • @Santangelo47

    my heart said to You

  • How did I get here...

  • Is she wearing a cape?

  • God, they are putting fire. Good!

  • iam am high

  • jussst mesmorising!!!

  • :-)

  • What Paganini did on the violin, Anoushka does on the sitar. Sheer Magic.

  • Youtube is also a blessing, if you can single out beauts like this ;)

  • The Shankar family is blessing to us all.

  • An absolute phenomenon to watch and listen to. Pure joy, gives new meaning to the word 'tight' applied to players. Unbelievable.

  • beautiful music.....

  • When i die, hope ill respawn on a planet where sitars are cheaper

  • how beautifull music it is.

  • merci , c'est que du bonheur :)

  • My head kept spinning and spinning faster as the song played, and as it ended in a frenzy and fury of fingers and notes, my head flew off!

    Absolutely Beautiful and Awesome!

  • The last minute or so of this performance... Anoushka's hands are moving so fast that it looks like the video is sped up. Absolutely incredible the way she and her father play. You have to admire their dedication as well as their talent.

  • precioso

  • que hermosaaa!!

  • more cowbell....needs more cowbell.

  • now that's what i call music!

  • Beautiful music. so much talient. Who is the guy on Anoushka left?

  • Anushka means sweet in Armenian, don`t know about her language but its anush in deed.

  • grace, skills and ability of making music is always a treat.

    thank you very much.

  • Beautiful...this is the best medicine for the Spirit & Soul, thank you & Namaste*

  • Viewers should know that Anoushka Shankar & company played this performance live in just one take. There were no multiple versions. This is true musicianship.

  • @SnapshotsMusic Would you expect less of Ravi Shankar's daughter?

  • @SnapshotsMusic Every classical musician does that. No big deal.

  • @ABanerj84 Yes, but not so for taped performances. Usually there are second or third takes- not here.

  • @SnapshotsMusic Nah man listen to live music from pandits and ustads. they give spotless performances for hours. Further, many such performances are video recorded live and are on youtube.

  • @SnapshotsMusic most clasical music is taped live and recorded live there for there is only a one take chance...

  • @SnapshotsMusic

Do you live under a rock or something?

  • @ABanerj84 they don't improvise usually though.

  • @heeerro I am sorry i have to say that you have not listened to classical music then. 90 % of indian classical music is improvisation. It is Anoushka who is playing all fixed composition of her father.

  • @ABanerj84

Come on...I sense that you a great connoisseur, a great vidwan and a rasika! Which is why I would submit to you that she absolutely deserves our respect; just listen to the flawless strokes, an
