Imagine her getting as old, blessed and active as her father, Ravi, it would be wonderful to see her greyhaired and wrinkled and as happy as she is now:)
watch how anoushka meditates into her music, she is playing the rolls royce of guitars, the lowly sitar... if we all loved this devotedly, we could change the world
All respect and bowing for music that does not try to entertain us with trivialities and mundane 'superficialities', this brings us back to what we are : connected beings - and no dogmas needed but human soul and depth
OK, maybe somebody's asked this already, but: Is that drummer related to the drummer who played with Ravi at the Monterey Pop Festival (in '67, I think)?
@emncaity Nope! The drummer (tabla player) at the 67 Monterey Pop Festival was Ustad Allarakha, the father of tabla maestro Ustad Zakir Hussain. The tabla player is Tanmoy Bose, another brilliant musician from Kolkatta (formerly Calcutta) in eastern India.
Thanks for the info. They looked vaguely similar in the face, and to the uninitiated (I'm a musician and have done a lot of percussion in addition to other instruments, but I'm not an Indian musician and am familiar with these rhythms only in a general musical sense) some of the sounds seemed fairly similar.
Incidentally, the reason I was even at this vid was that she's doing a gig here in town later this spring, and I was trying to figure out whether she'd be worth the ticket price (it's not expensive).
Can someone tell me what does the asian guy plays with his instrument? What is his function in this video? Also in Monterey's Ravi Shankar video is a lady playing same instrument smoothly but I don't understand if they put rhythm or something like that, I appreciate any of your answers.
Anoushka is a true master of the sitar, an instrument of infinite complexity, requiring extraordinary technique, golden ears, strong fingers and the ability to hear and play simultaneously whilst opening your heart to waves of energy and stillness. Her beautiful spirit fills the auditorium and her playing takes me to the edge of the universe. Shanti.
I wonder what is more accountable towards making a musician successful; is it the fact of how much popularity or money one can earn or is it the true fact that he/or she can touch a man soul and purify it with the music they play? This is like my sanctuary where i feel most safe, touched by God & most true to myself, the person who I really am and not furnished to stand fit in this materialistic life & society.
@cmvb Sorry, I made a joke. What we see is a Tanpura and it's really a kind of base instrument. A Tambura as you say is a different instrument (also with strings) from makedonia and bulgaria. ;-)

@ramfree27 Great artists playing in a group non-verbally communicate with each other onstage- knowing the score and form they are able to communicate as they play.
@ramfree27 Musicians can sort of feel where the piece is going and when good people play together they sort of link up. I jam some jazz stuff with my mates and we just play and it works out nicely. It does take a great deal of practise and improvisation is a completely different skill to learning and replaying a song. Try it out :D
@ramfree27 Like SnapShotsmusic said: With this particular type of music, they most likely know the composition, so that helps. But there is that place to connect. I'm not sure it can be explained, and I've been there. Even though it's powerful, I don't really think it's profound. Like sharing a heart. You can find it in anything you practice with joy. Even just cleaning the house or riding a bike. Just have to cultivate awareness.

YOU GET ANY DARNED KORG YOU WANT AND NOTHING CAN EVER COME CLOSE TO THE ACTUAL INSTRUMENT. I play the violin and I've tried reproducing the sound on synths and you never get the same feel. Besides, LOOK AT HER. She's grace personified.
Hey they make these synthesizers/keyboards today where you can get the same exact sound without having to hold that damned thing while sitting on a yoga matt on the floor. IT SOUNDS VERY LOVELY.
@Elywells Not quite. To the untrained ear maybe. I work with midi instruments and nothing beats a live string player, whether sitar or violin. The subtle phrasing, timbre, texture and nuances of a capable acoustic stringed instrument player are of infinite variety. Some hack hitting samples on his keyboard doesn't compare.
I always find it interesting that apparently the soul crushing reality of life is so overwhelming to many that the ability to enjoy a beautiful piece of art is objectionable to the form of trolling all that exists simply because they can. We all get one ride and for us it was a wonder to behold such an individual that can from that reservoir of the soul give to us but a taste of magic.

@Afgooyee If you want to learn the sitar the way Anoushka is playing, you move to India, move in with a guru, become his devoted student and study one instrument for a few years. Then you might get close, at some point, to what can be seen here.
