Ronbass, it wasn't based on a story of a specific general but it based on real stories of millions of people who were victims of Stalin's terror. Decorated generals, movie stars, political leaders and millions of ordinary people - no one was immune from it, no one was untouchable....
I studied this in History at uni and this film has always stayed with me. Magnificent, always impacts me the same way it did the first time. So tragic
@ronbass Of course it's based on a true story.. and this is just one family!! Millions of people were arrested during stalin times and sent to death camps for NOTHING and without proper trial... I can't even begin telling you how this depresses me.. families..human lives destroyed in the name of stupid propaganda bullsh*t!
@ronbass I will say the opinion of the opposite side:
It was not based on a true story and was never proclaimed to be. It is based on quiet mythologised imagination of "stalinist repressions", born by Khruschev era (60th years) and progressing anti-soviet paranoia of the Perestroika time (85-91).
The political message of the film is more then doubtfull - from communistic point of view, but the film is quiet good and authentic one.
@ronbass Not 100%,,but I did research and there really was a man named Kotov who was falsely arrested, and then the charges were dropped after his death in 1955
I loved this Oscar winning Russian film so much that I've seen it many times. The Actors, The director, The Scenery and THE MUSIC specially has stayed with me all these years.
I'm looking Forward to seeing the Sequels that are released but NOT SHOWING in US. I hope I can find it here on Youtube.
The father's and the amazingly beautiful daughter's relationship aches my heart.
I see second time the movie,is briliant and well done on every scene.Good work for Screnwriter, director, foto director, and t-rest of t-crow.Bravo rebiata. keep working,we love-it.
did they really have big balloons roaming the urals like that? this movie is all perfection. russian cinema at near finest. i must defer to ирония судьбы. but this ranks right up there.

Outstanding film all around. I still say Russian cinema is far superior to Hollywood. Thanks so much for posting. Was this based on a true story?
