My question is this: If you already have favorite games and series that you absolutely LOVE, and you don't even buy those on day one, what can a game company possibly do to make you buy their games at launch? What's the thing that would win you over?

You are/were super excited about Catherine, but still didn't buy it new. What would push to buy it new, if there's anything capable of doing so?

Honestly at the time of making this video i did feel bad for them but then someone pointed out the fact the companies charge for DLC too and now your point of the original price points for the consoles... I didn't buy ps3 or xbox until they were 300 dollars or less. I no longer feel bad for them, they are clearly just being greedy, it does make PC gaming more appealing. I'm likely going to buy a Wii U and hope for the best.

game companies loose money on used game sales 60 bucks a game plus dlc if you want everything and all map packs its like 120 bucks now they want to prohibit used games

I doubt they would do something like this.Very few people, casual or hardcore gamers would tolerate it. I wouldn't.It's too much. What I'm really wondering is how expensive the next generation will be. The current generation especially in the beginning was incredibly expensive.

@asx516 Yeah we'll see. I know initially Sony and microsoft were losing money on the first run of consoles and didn't start making money until they lowered the price points, so here's hoping they learned a lesson. I'm likely buying a Wii U to start with because Nintendo has been good about keeping things cheap and I feel like they learned a lesson with the weak internet play.

I'd dare say if the plan were implemented as stated, it could be the death of used games but my idea could fix all that... and if not the death it could lead to a slow decline. I honestly believe that the videogame industry will kill itself eventually. Take Saints Row The Third, you need a code to play co-op online. Sure, not a big deal. Then you have the exclusive day 1 DLC, system exclusive DLC, System exclusive content on disc. They are excluding all their customers who don't have online connectivity and can't get the DLC. They are doing so many things that WILL hurt the industry very badly. Nice to see you're a redditor too.

and just to sorta help explain why they are doing this is that, as humans when ever we see something causing a problem, we tend to try to eliminate the cause all together, though this is good in many cases, it is not always the best, I bet not in a million years they would have thought of what you did. Like no one is going to buy a online pass for a a rental game unless they developed a "rental pass" that allowed online access for a few days...it's still an added cost. :-/ haha I always try to consider both sides, thats why politics make my head hurt. Actually, the bulk of money that the main companies make is from the systems and accessories. It is possible that the software companies could make a bit more, but many of us used game buyers would just not bother buying anything if they cost more. It would basically be suicide for the game companies to do that. They already made a profit on the original sale, it's just whining when they complain about used ones.

@edzim10 Not Gamestop's fault any more than it is the fault of someone who holds a garage sale or a company (i.e. video store) which rents out games. We've seen the same thing happen to movies, butchered for rental markets, or not even released to some video stores because the production company wants the day-one dollar. This is the sad reality.

@csandreas My PC was probably 1000$ total and it's a low high end machine. But, most games are cheaper. I got SR3 for 25$ the day it released. Almost every game I play I purchased for less than 40$ at least, usually less. Not to mention a nice library of free to play games.

@csandreas Depends, the original buy in is a bit steeper at 500-600$ but usually you can keep the system current by simply upgrading your graphics card after a few years rather than buying a brand new system like consoles.

I'd like to see that happen on a console. The only game I've purchased full price this year was Portal 2. Even Battlefield 3 I got for 40$ preorder. This sounds like people are just making stuff up. Sony and Microsoft already have a system in place to make extra money off games: DLC. DLC is non-transferable outside of collector's edition bundles (and even some of those come with activation codes), but at that point the company has already stopped looking at the game as a means to generate considerable income.

What you are describing is essentially a failure of adaptability. Same with any digital medium, those who have the incentive and means to hold onto the status quo will fight tooth and nail and gavel to do so. What companies have to do to survive, is look at who is succeeding in this market, and how do you become innovative rather than detrimental.

You make a decent point with the Halo thing, but if it's any half-decent game it should still allow you to be able to play the game normally, like Battlefield 3 does. I bought that game like a good 2-3 months after release and I'm still able to compete with the higher levels.

And yeah, most games usually aren't worth the $60 straight up, you just have to pick out the good ones.

@csandreas There's no actual online multiplayer but it does have couch co-op where two people can work together to climb the towers. There are 8 seperate endings that you can get in the game but I didn't have the patience to play through the game 7 more times to try for the others when I could just see them online. What console do you play online with?

@Raidei Both, I'm mostly online with PS3 because most of my friends and subscribers have ps3... but XBL's service is more reliable so I'm buying more games for it to play online. Gears of War 3 was definitely a game that was more awesome to play online than off. And on Catherine, I'd do the same thing beating it once is enough.
