I wish articles were that easy... there're still much more rules to study about articles like means of transport, institutions in society, forms of entertainment, musical instruments, etc.
Dude you saved my ass, I have "A" presentation this friday in my institute where o native english speakers go and I have to explain a/an/the, Ill base my work in your explanation but Ill have to reduce my level and fastness because they are basic level, your making a great contribution thanks a lot and gud lock !
Hi, I'm from Brazil. I don't know I am right, but I learned that we use "a" before the words that its first letter sounds as a vowel, an example: we have the word "hour" and we use "an hour" and not "a hour". So it isn't right if we teach that we use "an" before the words that starts with vowel. I don't know I am right, I want some opinion! Despite of it your videos are the best! I have never found videos like yours! I'm sorry if I wrote something wrong! Thank you for everything. Kisses!
@amandafmp Hi, you're right. It depends on a sound of the first letter not a letter itself. 'hour'- we don't pronounce 'h' sound. That's the reason why 'an' comes before 'hour'. It is the right thing to teach that we use 'an' before the word that pronounces with a vowel sound. I hope it helps you.
I enjoyed your video. Just one little thing- you spelled "your" when it should have been "you're" as in "when everyone knows what you're talking about."
There's a mistake. "The" can be use with plural objects (of course if we mean specific things). On the other hand he didn't mention that "a" can't be use with uncountable nouns. Also "the" can't be use with the names of continents, countries, towns etc. Anyway, this lesson was very helpful for me when I didn't understand english well.
GUYS ONE MORE THING THUMPS IT UP SO EVERY ONE CAN SEE. what i learned from my teacher that you also use (The) in example : a country starts with United you will say it like, The United States of America or The United kingdom or you can also use (The) in example names of mountains, names of oceans, names of seas. example:The Pacific ocean or The Dead sea or The mount everest. guys hope this helped im still in high school im not a teacher or something thumb this up so every one can see!!
i speak good english,my vocab is good, but i couldnt use articles properly and tht developed complex in me but now guru james is sheding light on this confusion .Thnx for tht guru
your lesson helped me a lot, tomorrow I have to give a class about the articles so this is a good lesson for me, because you explain very well thank you.
You're a very charming person and you know what you're doing! Thumbs up! You know, I live in Russia and I understand how difficult it is to study a foreign language whan you don't live in a country where this language is spoken. Your classess make up to it a lot!.
you are a good teacher, look very confident, and explain things very well, except for the fact that you spelled "your" when it should have been "you're." Kind of surprised a teacher would make such a mistake and it kind of loses your credibility as a good teacher for grammar lessons.
@draquela Even the best of us make mistakes. It is good to draw the teacher's attention to it. But it does not mar their credibility. It just means you have learnt well from him/her (whomsoever your teacher is/was), your puntuation(s) and grammar.
What a pity about writing “your” instead of “you're” for “you are” on the board, but it does not detract from the lesson which is very clear and appreciated. Alexander Pope reminds us that to err is human.
Why did you use a with 'thingS? Is it still the plural or everything has changed for now?? haha
And what about the abstract nouns? They're uncountable so what article should I use with them. (if any) Please. There's really a ambush in it for me. I need your help!

Your explanations of articles in spoken and written discourse are likely informative, but please don't mislead others about American sports, i.e., the Philadelphia Flyers won the biggest baseball game? Don't the Flyers play hockey?!

Hi James, great video but...
'The' is NOT only for singular objects.
Examples:
The dog. The dogs. The pen. The pens. The man. The men. Singular and plural.
a & an are for singular objects.
Also...
a is followed by a consonant SOUND. an is followed by a vowel SOUND.
an hour The h is a consonant but not a consonant sound. Hour starts with a vowel SOUND....the same as our. (Crazy English!)
Thanks for THE video. It was A pleasure. THE pleasure was all mine. :)
