Very true. Empathy is key. Please think about this very carefully + within your own context. I recently went to my local grocery store, and a homeless man was asking for a refund, because the salad he had bought, turned out be to putrid. His little daughter was waiting outside the store. Everybody inside the store treated him as a crazy person. He was NOT crazy, but very desperate...once we started talking OUTSIDE the fucking store. This could have been me, after 9 months of unemployment.

In regards to people believing everything on TV, it is much deeper. Our education is terrible. Memorize a few points and dates and a few people and pass an exam. We never examine events in great detail, nor human elements of history and we never learn much in terms of subjects that are practical for life. We are taught that experts are whom we should listen to and never question them. People in all other developed nations are more sophisticated out of high school than many people here with PHDs

What I mean is that saying that people are so stupid or what have you misses the fact that people in mass being fooled and distracted by the media of their interests isn't everyone's fault. If people were more vigilant the propaganda would be that much more sophisticated and so on. The point is that the laws must be changed to change the incentive models of media. Stop them from relying on elite funding(advertising revenue) to stay in business and so on.

I would love to hear if your consideration of the way in which people are fooled by the media, kept distracted ect. Personally I believe that the media in the US does as much as it needs to to keep americans under the control of elites, and that blaming individuals for being human is missing the point.

Quite the contrary: Ayn Rand made the assumption, that humans, acting on behalf on their self-interests, would eventually benefit the society at large. Rand, presumes from the outset, that humans act rationally, when it comes to their own self-interest, when this is clearly not the case ! She presumes, that nobody has ulterior motives, in preserving their own power over others, and that 'rational' actions will win in the end.

I largely agree. I don't see Rand as a philosopher as much as an idealist..and like many of her modern followers, seemed to think that if people turned off their emotions then all people would become highly accomplished innovators and businessmen - which isn't the reality. I think her ideas applied to the times - when accomplishment was valued - but not today, when the institutions are failed and those who have some remnants are hording what they can and stealing the rest.

Two years ago I'd be arguing with Objectivists because everything they preached and practiced was about to crash - and it's happening. Now we're moving toward a post consumer contingent culture - and I'd like to see people not follow a philosophy just because it's fits the situation and their sense of security - rather than take control of their own destinies. It seems every ideology ignores the duality of human nature- which is why all politicians fail to represent their voters.

So I do think there is a largely severed bridge between ideals and practicality. But the problem I have with government is the same problem I have with corporatism. Both are essentially the same. The reference to John Galt, a fictional character, in her novel, is meant to expose this character as a stand in for Wall Street, and what they stand for. Greenspan was an ardent follower of Ayn Rand, btw. So, do you still support the Fed?

I'd like to hear your thoughts on John Galt. I read a massive series of books called Sword of Truth series and loved it. Later I found out that the author was into Ayn Raynd.
