You can swing your sword constantly and make things back up till they hit a wall and proceed to cut them to shreds. Worst part is they can sometimes get you the same way with cheap hits. It isn't that bad a game though, just kinda screwy at times.

oh god it was hilarious, I was in nordmar, and I killed 100's of orcs in the mines ON MY OWN (This is with that community patch the fanboys CLAIM fixes the game) and the only ones I kept dying at were 3 shamans who kept machine gunning their spells and stun locking me.
Community patch should come out in few weeks and fix this crap system. I played through the game as mage because of this although I never do it in any rpg.
The sad thing is that the combat system is more realistic than things like oblivion and most action RPG's. You cannot run around freely while swinging a big two-handed sword, or a halberd... Footing is one of the most important aspects when using a sword. I understand dodging and such, but the way oblivion and like games portray it is terrible. At least this game has some real footing. Although AI needs some work and generally combat needs tweaks... I'll have to try G1 & 2 I guess.

Why press directions or use blocking because there is no need to. I like the game, but the combat is a bit disappointing after even gothic 2.

It's a good game, but I have to agree that the combat sucks big time.
The archery looks pathetic too. It's like the character hasn't ever seen a bow in his life.
