It's fascinating to hear Shostakovich playing it himself - I've never before heard this movement played with such pure manic insane energy. I like it a lot. :)
i wonder if he chuckled when he wrote that trumpet in. wonderful humor i suppose from stravinsky but hey, this is a crazy awesome piece and he was a fantastic pianist
i have heard shos's other recording of this with Andre Cluytens which he made in paris, but NEVER knew another one existed! it's amazing to hear a great composer play his own piece - and especially exciting when it's a composer as secretive as Shostakovich! Great, thanks for uploading :)
Hello Zach! It's not so easy to "cut" the rest to fit YT 10 minutes requirements. I'm sure you can find full version on CD. Search also for Dmitri Alexeev recording. Absolutely wonderful!
Shostakovich plays Schostakovich, I don't get it, who is Schostakovich? sure sounds like Shostakovich's concerto...

On my computer the piano sounds like it is in the same room. I don't have the expertise to understand how that is possible, but I sure LIKE it.

The conductor is Samuel Samosud, which was a close friend of Prokofiev, and if I'm not wrong, his biographer.

Do we know who the trumpet player was on this? Josef Volovnik is my guess...
