This verse is speaking of those who were followed in falsehood, they will disavow themselves from those who followed them. Well that is what some shia think too... I think it originated in India/pakistan and the muslims that converted there may not have gotten rid of their previous culture. Culture is not islam... but not all culture is necessarily haram. You cannot just blame the shia for this... every religion and sect has its own culture whether it is halal or haram, inshallah may god guide all of us.

This verse is speaking of those who were followed in falsehood, they will disavow themselves from those who followed them. Jesus (pbuh) will disavow himself from the latter "Christians" because of their fallacy in creed of trinity etc, Moses (pbuh) will disavow himself from the latter "Jews" because of their innovations etc.

One has to simply look at the previously revealed scriptures to see how the legal rulings varied throughout the ages.

Culture is not islam... but not all culture is necessarily haram. Many shias do it, but other shias do not think it is allowed at all. I personally think it is okay as long as you dont inflict pain on yourself (basically just tapping your chest, no blood or anything.) I think there is a ruling that if you are scaring people away then it is not allowed, unfortunately some do this in public.But there is even a sahaba of the prophet that ripped all of his teeth because he was so sad, i think it was the end of badr.
