Fucking stupid. its one thing to be against sexism (Which goes both ways by the way...) but being against masculinity? this is nature... masculinity and beauty is what keeps us going as a fucking species...i don't understand you feminists really... always bitch about equality this... misogynistic that... but the second something happens you curl up and say help 'i am but a woman... most of you feminists just hate the whole idea of sex, and recreation...im pretty sure you hate yourselves. fuck U.
most of these are taken way out of context, Gaston is supposed to me a tool. He's the bad guy. As well the fact that in the scene from an emperor's new groove they're showing all his flaws and that he's an egotistical douche. And the point of the film moulan is that women are just as skilled as men, and that it's depicting the way of life in feudal China. In lion king what would you reather have lions do talk about who'll be dominant, because that's not what lions do.
this is the biggest pile of shit ive ever seen. male heroes ? oh wait a second, how many girls are interested in action heroes ?!!?! I guess not as much as boys like it, so why on earth should there be 50 / 50 m/w ratio in movies ? if there are more boys watching , then its only natural to have male heroes ( the person who watches wants to have a connection to the hero)
sexism? mulan is one of the most feminist kids movie ever. Disney has always showed female independance at it's era. belle and pocahontas didnt want to marry the big strong "manly man", mufusa was a good father and only showed violence in order to protect his son, what was the point in showing gaston's song belle he was a bad guy he's suppose to be superficial to balance out the theme of love beyond looks in beuaty and the beast.
@Omikron1112 No I just think that trying to defend us woman in the intelligence and useful department would be more effective if you displayed it yourself. That's all.
Not to say this is a valid video but I never really watched Disney as a child except for things like Lilo & Stitch and I turned out to be a respectful gentleman
This video is dumb. All the examples you gave of dominance were just the heroes fighting the bad guys. Not to mention you even used a villain to show vulgar masculinity. Because you know HE'S WAS DESIGNED THAT WAY TO MAKE YOU DISLIKE HIM because he's a VILLAIN.
@one1950smovie ....life has changed since the the 1940's and soooo have the female characters in disney films. People can learn a lot from disney films, also from the classics. Women should rediscover their lost sensitive side, while men should remember how to be gentlemen. Condemning disney for drawing good looking charcaters with awesome traits and great values is RIDICULOUS!!
You are wrong, you just show some clips from disney movies. Take for example that men are fighting men to show who's the strongest like in the lion king when Simba is fighting Scar. but earlier Simba and Nala fought and Nala won, ergo Nala is better and stronger then both Simba and Scar. Therefor you're wrong.
PEOPLE WHO MAKE THESE VIDEO'S ARE LIOKE MONKEY'S WITH TYPE WRITERS. AND YOUR ALL IGNORANT TO THING THIS IS SHAKESPEAREAN. GOOD LUCK TO YOU ALL TO THOSE WHO MASTER THEMSELVES.
@Omikron1112 "Lioke monkey's with type writers"? Really? The least you can do when insulting somebody is be gramatically correct. If you're going to have a sexist rant on the internet, do try and make sure that what you're saying makes sense.
@94cxc Oh? really? go ahead and sporead ignorance arounfd everywhere. Men like you are the ones telling wemen that they will never be a mans equal mentally. men like you will always tell wemen that can not compete with us. Men like you on here will always tell wemen that they will never be able to defend themselves agaisnt a bigger apponent. and fools like you will always be foolish enough enough to try and save them.
@Omikron1112 *Woman. Honey if your going to make an agreement about how men put down women thinking they're stupid, please check your grammar/spelling because your only proving them right :P
ALL YOU FUK TARDS ARE LIEK CONSPIRACY THEORISTS ....... THROWING SHIT AND IDEAS OUT THERE ON THE INTERNET AND THE NEXT PERSON THROWS MORE IGNORANCE INTO THIS SHIT.
LEARN MORE ABOUT WHAT YOUR TALKING ABOUT. THIS IS OBVIOUSLEY NOT AN ISSUE ABOUT SEXISM AND SUBJUCATION. IF YOU EVEN GET THAT FARE FROM LEARNING ANYTHING ABOUT THIS SUBJECT AT ALL.
Make male protagonists that care about their hair, their clothes, have a slim athletic body, that show emotions and are a prize for women. Make them feminine, straight and badass at the same time. Make some women fight for them too, and make women support them a lot. Then when young boys will strive to become that, we will have balance. Just my thoughts. =)
Well Guys and Girls are physically and mentally different. Sexism, which is prejudice against one of the sexes, is bad but I cant see why portraying strength and dominance is a bad thing
I mean its true that these qualities are terrible if perverse to the level of Gaston in the Beauty and the Beast but the story itself portrayed Gaston as the real beast like what IEntertainers said.
If health class has taught me anything, too much of anything is bad but too little of something is just as bad
Wemen need to realize that if you want to compete you need to give up sertain things. Like thinking a man will get down and dirty for you. That wemen can learn to compete on a mans level. Do the things a man can do. Mountain climbing is not just about strength but endurance as well. Some wemen have more endurance then some men and vise versa.
Men are not the problem for wemen. Wemen need to learn to do what men do in order to compete with us and fight back. Only complaining gets
That is such fucking bullshit. Absolute bullshit. Wemen objectify themselves to us to make us lust after them and wemen realize this at a young an early age. So why is it wrong for men to not objectify wemen? use them to sell cars or magazines? As long as the womans consent is given of course.
Wemen are fucking idiots to act like victems when they commite the same acts with themselves. They make themselves look like objects to be desired and wanted.
@Omikron1112 YOU are so full of crap. if women act that way its because they were RAISE That way! and by who? thats right: by that MEN themselves,
you fail to see that kids learn what's shown to them , and if the only things little girls are shown at a young age is to wear a pink dress and be feminine and weak,
then THATS how they will grow up thinking.
WOMEN are TOUGH to objectify themselves by MEN when they are born!
@Omikron1112 and no wonder why , since society is based on the idea that women should submit and men dominate them, HOW IN THE HELL are they suppose to grow strong and dignified
when Society ENCOURAGES them to be weak and gentle!
@ichigouzumakii WHAT? JUST BECAUSE A WOMAN IS FEMANIN AND BEAUTIFULL AND LOOKS WEAK? WAHT EVER IT IS THAT MAKES MEN WANT TO SAVE THEM FROM FROM OTHER MEN AND ATROCATIES OF LIFE. FUK THAT. WEMEN NEED TO REALIZE ITS A VERY COLD UNIVERSE FOR A REASON. THEY NEED TO REALIZE MEN ARE FLAWED.......... MEN ARE LEARNING TO MASTER THEMSELVES. ITS NOT A NUMBERS GAME. THIS IS REALITY AND THE FACTS OF LIFE ARE SUCH THAT LIFE IS NOT FAIR. SO YOU IMPROVE YOURSELF AND TRY BEAT THE WORSE ONES AT THEY"RE OWN GAME.
@ichigouzumakii OK YOU SIMPLETON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! UNDERSTAND THIS VERY CAREFULLY. AND I MEAN THIS LIKE FOR REAL OK. MASTER YOUR SELF OR BE MASTERD BY OTHERS ITS YOUR CHOICE. IF YOU ARE NOT ABLE TO MASTER YOURSELF YOU WILL BE INFLUENCED BY OTHERS REALLY FAST BECAUSE OF YOUR IGNORANCE.
SLAVES ARE MADE THIS WAY BECAUSE THOSE WHO ARE WEAKER ARE TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF THEY"RE WEAKNESS AND IGNORANCE AND THE UNWILLINGNESS OF THOSE WHO ARE TOO LAZY OR EXPECT SOMEONE ELSE OR OTHERS FIX ITal
@ichigouzumakii SO IF WEMEN CHOOSE TO OBJECTIFY THEMSELVES THEN THAT IS THEY"RE FAILT. NOT THE FAULT OF MEN. BUT ITS OK FOR WEMEN TO COMPLETELY PLAY THE MIND GAMES THEY PLAY AND TAKE ADVANTAGE OF MEN? YOUR A FOOL WEATHER UR A GUY OR GIRL. WAKE UP< THE UNIVERS IS BUILT OF THE DESTRUCTION OF SOMETHING DESTROYED OR SOMETHING LESSER. HUMAN BEINGS ARE FORTUNATE ENOUGH TO USE THEY"RE CONTIOUSNESS AND MINDS TO OVER COME THIS OBSTACLE, BUT LOOSERS LIKE YOU COMPLAINE ........... ALL THE TIME.
@Omikron1112 SAVE WEMEN? LET THEM SAVE THEMSELVES. MEN HAVE WHAT THEY HAVE BECAUSE UNLIKE WEMEN ...... MEN ARE FOCED TO DIE AND FIGHTE FOR IDEAS THAT THEY DID OR NOT NOT BELEIVE IN. MEN PAY FOR IT WITH THEY"RELIFE ANF BLOOD. IF WENEM WANT WAHT MEN HAVE THEN THEY HAVE TO BEAT US AT OUR OWN GAME USEING THEY"RE INTELECT AND HIGHER CONTIOUSNESS BECAUSE MENARE STRUGGLEING WITH IT TOO. SO WHY DONT YOU FUKING STOP COMPLAINEING AND CHANGE YOURSELF, KNOW YOURSELF, THEN YOU CANHELP OTHERS.
I am writing my dissertation on masculinity in Disney cartoons however i am arguing that in order to make its male characters more appealing it emasculates them. I would agree on a few of your points but you use examples incorrectly in some cases. around 4:15 you are making a point about violence and it being weak not to dominate. when Gaston is taunting the beast its a device to make the audience empathies with the beast his lack of willingness to fight back is not a sign of weakness.
@Andyrewluck44 there are other points too. Mulan is a good example as she spends the entire film becoming strong and independent and then when offered power and respect from the emperor she just throws it away to please her dad and get married. that's a good example.
I see kinda historical stuff in this. Most of the movies are based in the past and lets face it men were suppose to act this way! And with the Lion King ummm it is showing nature in some ways because male lions fight to be the head of the pride.
I urge anyone who watches these videos on Disney subliminal messaging to look up the term "Princess/Warrior Programming". It shows how the msm is teaching kids to be pigeonholed into set gender stereotypes, said method is crucial to the nwo plans for continuing to destabilize society i.e. produce unthinking male "warriors" and unthinking female "princesses". Also look up Cultural Marxism and the Frankfurt School, think for yourself and don't be bulled by sycophants like richal2574.
I would like to know the purpose of your video? What are you promoting? I can see how dominance might not be a favorite thing and is the method Disney trying to portray masculinity bad? But what's exactly wrong with masculinity? Some LGBT rights along the lines as well? I find the purpose of this video highly ambiguous.
I have to agree with the maker of the video in that, it doesn't really matter if it shows the dominance or such in bad characters or if it shows realistic lions, or if Mulan is trying to make a point. When you're a child, you already understand the world, hat you're yet to learn, id how, as a member of society, you're so posed to live in it, seeing all of this as a building block for the verisimilitude of the film, or for it to look funny or to appeal to the existing world is what the kid pks up
I dont mind the masculinity in the lion king at all because that actually is how lions are in the wild---male lions are dominant in real life. But as for the rest of the disney movies (human characters), I agree, except mulan has the situation of masculinity vs femenism. Mulan is proving a point that fighting is all about whats important to you and not which sex organs your were born with. Personally i still like herculese, aladdin, and beauty and the beast even though im tierd of stereotypes.
The problem inherent is that you were assigned a project to find sexual inequality in Disney films. Have you ever heard of the quote, "If you look for trouble you will find it", or something along that line? I could have found twice the examples you did, one because I'm good at bullshitting assignments, second I can choose to percieve what I want and justify it accordingly. A few examples don't actually defend your claim anyway, the purpose of Gaston is to show the faults of a shallow man.
Beauty and the Beast itself is all about the beast calming the fuck down and accepting kindness and tenderness and compassion as good endearing traits! Did you expect none of us to remember the movie? Do you htink your audience is so fucking stupid we wouldn't correct you on your downright flasehoods? I give you an F sir, your Essay is loaded with falsities and does at all prove it's thesis that this is what Disney purports.
Go back to english class and actually bother to study.
The important in the end of any Disney film is more often than not to show how one side attempts to NOT kill the villain directly. In the fucking clip you show you cut out the aprt where Simba tells Scar that' he won't kill him but instead he simply exiles him and then Scar tries to win through a cowardly action, lunges at Simba and misses. Then Scar is killed by the colelctive might of the weaker Hyenas.
Your flimsy little video essay is even more full of holes than Mickey Mouse Monopoly.
Dominance is being showed in your example footage as scary, evil and despicable. He's beating on a poor creature he hates and shows no form of compassion or remorse for his actions.
Your argument falls apart when you use Gaston of all people, the fucking villain of the movie to prove your point about how men should view women according to Disney.
Observing as a space alien, Disney films, including ones with human actors, give me the impression that heterosexual behavior has to be force fed to people. The younger the better. Is this why most men born since WWII are duds when it comes to being capable of personal relationships, frequently with other men. If male/male is so queer, why is there this obsession with negating it? Male/female comes naturally to most people. No reinforcement necessary. Manliness and body type are not related.

3:25 - 3:42 you totally missed the point. Mulan passes as a soldier because she proves that she is able to fend for herself, she's strong and physically fit, yes, but her defining characteristic is her ability to think on her feet and her resourcefulness. After all the macho men in her camp failed to retrieve the arrow from the pole, she succeeds by using her mind. All the men witness and respect this IN THE VERY CLIP YOU SHOWED.
@Rickal2574 Judging from your comments, I wouldn't have deduced you to have one ounce of intelligence within you to analyse someone's perspectives and opinions towards social issues and be able judge that a person has been bullied at a younger age. And don't pick on a person's cultural background, your comment just made a statement about your own personality if you would pick on someone for having an uncommon name within social norms as well as how misinformed you are when clearly 'Sanjay' is a
@ParanoidAndroid98 I'm sure you're responding to me, even though you spelled my name wrong. I'll be brief. Go fuck yourself. And furthermore I will judge and pick on whomever I please. This doesn't make me misinformed, but rather an ass. That doesn't bother me at all. I didn't direct my comments to you. If you choose to get involved, please know that the more you stick your neck out, the easier it will be to get your head taken off.
@1236sason Look at his behaviour throughout most of the film; it's disgustingly chauvinistic and manipulative towards women. People like you are just people willingly prepared to solicit and submit themselves to men who behave as such.
I love this, I was going to do a debate on this topic for Youth Speaks last year but I became too ill and my partner had to take it over. I still play to do an artical on it
As much as we would all LOVE to belive that Disney hasnt been shoving Sexist Ideals in to our brains, sadly in many cases it is true. Why do you think girls are so insecure about being even slightly overweight? Just look at any young girls Idol, 95% of the time its a princess. And look at THEIR body.
So... the media truly is putting sexist ideas in to our heads, and unrealistic images of what ppl should look like. Simple.. as.. that..
Dude, these are CARTOONS! why would we expect anything other than over simplified archetypes, the same ones that all cultures have used throughout history? almost everyone my age grew up on these same movies you've shown, and yet they are not insecure, sniveling victims to stereotypes.
The creator of this video is suffering from jealousy and was probably bullied as a child. Your view and nerdishly hippy bullet points enrage me. Now you have the internet to hide behind. With a name like Sanjay, I'm surprised you're able to get out of bed each day. Thanks for sticking your neck out. I'm sure you'll lose your head sooner or later. You should be thanking Disney for keeping your kind employed.
@richal2574 What the hell are you talking about? It's pretty much common knowledge that Disney pushes negative images of male/female sexuality onto children. Look up Princess/Warrior programming, it's not that difficult to understand. And please quit with the straw-man crap, "you must be a looser because you have a goofy name, derp", you sound like someone who regurally watches Disney films (people out of touch with reality).
The funny thing is that ALL of these movies were not written by Disney. They are all old tales retold by Disney, slightly altered. Anyways, this is just someones school assignment...Why is everyone getting so worked up?
@LuneyTune72 Mainly because it's a shitty school assignment that fails because it takes words out of context to prove it's point. It expects us to not fact check him and accept all he says as true, never bothering to look at the overall picture and just quote mine films.
Also holy fuck, literally everyone in these comments are idiots. Disney makes movies that are good and yet often have things that deserve to be criticized. They're not Jesus Christ's own animation studio, but they're not the fucking Patriarchy Propaganda Division or what fucking have you. God damn I hate the internet.
This is just cherry picking, misdirection, and altogether sophistic piece that assembles divergent parts of these movies without regard for context. The constant use of Gaston as a bastion of masculinity without pointing out that he's shown as a villain and buffoon is the most egregious bit of deception. Its too bad since there is a lot in Disney movies in regards to gender roles that deserves to be called out upon. Also stop with the "concerned music with bad voice-over" style of moviemaking.
Mulan is a woman who DOES all of those things in the song that only men are supposed to do, thus making the song ironic and, well, stupid. That's the whole point!
i really don't care about the frist things and i hate sexism for many reasons. Mucluarlity or how ever you spell it is optianal no one is forceing anyone do it men only care about phyicall stats it seems and no i am not takeing it form this video and i have wacth all of the moives that are on here. dominic it just to show supiored which sometimes it is bum to use it all the time. A lot of men may force this on their sons or others but as for me i don't give a dam.
This idiot obviously never watched beauty and the beast, the beast is shown to be the hero, not gaston. Gaston is shown to be an example disney is telling kids not to follow.
Wow. I wish I could type everything that's wrong with this video but there's a character limit. There's plenty of horrible sexist portrayals of women in the world, why on earth would you go after Disney? Because it's controversial? Shit like this is the reason people think feminists and feminism are irrational and stupid.
Disney needs to make a video of the weaker boy geting the girls or have some real love shown where tears and heartbreak is shown not a fight to the death, and to show that girls are not slaves but beauiful works of art!!
@AidenMicheals Milo is a stick-like nerd who gets Kida, a beautiful, dangerous princess. Aladdin is a poor homeless kid who is also by no means overtly masculine, and he gets Jasmine, is a strong willed and independent girl. Hercules started out skinny too, and hated. He got Megara, who's tough and doesn't take shit.
Videos like this are the reason people roll their eyes at the word 'feminism'. Just because a girl is portrayed as beautiful doesn't mean she's a sexist portrayal.
Gaston is an interesting case, because he is a hyper-masculine figure that is made the enemy, and the hero is the one that wishes to rid himself of his masculine beastliness (quite literally the beast).
I think these are some great points, although I wouldnt have used Gaston as much as he is MEANT to be a deliberate caracature of the stereotypically, overly masculine hero.
Ok yes I do admit that disney does display some character's masculinity as Strength, Dominance, and power, but I also believe that they have created male characters that are compassionate, loving, and devoted to a good cause. =)
Too many complains and whining here. I believe, you cannot control everything kids watch. Poor kids who live in a less conducive environment turn out to be more successful than rich kids most of the time.
There are some great points but I don't think Gaston is portrayed as attractive and what masculinity should be. Gaston's physical appearance is not representing ideal beauty but brutality. The silly girls are portrayed as airheads and are there to contrast Belle who thinks Gaston is a Jerk. When hercules is only flaunting his muscles, he is a good-for-nothing boy. I think Disney gender stereotypes in current Disney channel dramas are worse than the more complex movies.
@thirdsphere145 I agree, but with hercules, he realizes that having strength and power isn't everything, and at the end he chooses to stay with Meg, instead of being an immortal being because he realizes there is more to life than being a god.
Most people shut their eyes and ears when incontrovertible historical evidence points to the fact that Disney, going 'way back to the days of Walt's disastrous management technique itself, reeked of nothing but rampant profiteering, distrust of employees, and outright discrimination (especially of women). By every standard definition, Walt was a giant creep; a good buddy of Joe McCarthy's, and a major proponent for blacklisting many decent Americans. I despise Disney, both man and corporation.
Any freaking human who thinks that Disney promotes Sexism point blankly has never understood a Dinsey movie. Walt Disney was a man of exalted intelligence. It is even suggested that he had his connections with the society of Priority of Sion. For God's sake-understand the philosophies in the movies before making such senseless points. You can just about twist and copy, paste any scenes with commentary that Disney promotes sexism. If you have even a trace of doubt, fuckng watch the full movies!
@nqm0230 Not all movies were made by Walt Disney himself and he was also a man affected by gender expectations of those time. While I agree some people miss the point of Disney movies, there still are some stereotypes.
Aladdin and Jafar fight for different things. Aladdin fights for good, for kingdom and for the people of Agrabah-that's why he is termed as 'diamond in the rough'. Jafar is fighting for power. He wanted the Princess initially, so he could get to the throne through her. But who won in the end? Love or Lust
In beauty & the beast, The prince was cursed to be a beast because he "judged the woman"that came to his door for help on the basis of "beauty" and turned her away. Doesn't it show not to judge people by their looks?
The Gaston song from Beauty and the Beast-The movie primarily resolves around the fact that how earlier french society taught women... should marry off early however Belle chose to differ, Gaston wants her, this is one of his cheap tricks to get her, It only reflects that background. The heroin is Belle not Gaston. It shows her courage that she broke free of the society chains.
Please giuve us a break, no woman wants an emotional, short, skinny, feminin man. the things woman complaining about sexism also do not want such men. Disney movies protray what most women secretly want. Stop LYING to yourself and us.
caring, compassion and vulnerability are not parts of masculinity. they are part of men, and all men are feminine to an extent. but masculinity is indeed about strength and dominance.
@LfunkeyA To be more accurate, the meaning of masculinity and femininity is open to interpretation. I've never considered masculinity to be about dominance (and frankly that's a rather simple-minded way to think about it--what you're talking about is learned social roles, not the innate attributes of males or females).
But you ARE partially right, because masculinity/femininity are usually sexist terms, as they are based upon those same learned social conventions mentioned above.
the point you're missing is that masculine =/= male, and feminine =/= female. each person has varying degrees of masculinity and femininity. i don't know why these were named with gender in mind, probably because males tend to be more masculine and females tend to be more feminine. but compassion and gentleness, while a part of every male to a degree, are not 'masculine' traits.
@LfunkeyA No, I fully understood what you meant. That is precisely why they are sexist terms. "Strength" and "dominance" are based upon social perceptions. The very idea of what makes someone strong is interpretive--it just so happens that our society values physical power over other forms of strength.
you did an amazing job on this video and you made a valid point. This was very professional and not just a bashing of Disney. These movies are great and teach lessons other lessons. Also these movies aren't set in a modern time period but Disney should considering making a movie in which this problem is addressed.t In the future Disney should make movies that correspond to societal problems now. We should move out of the past with princesses and unrealistic heroes.
... missed the point on Beauty and the Beast. Disney's latest version of the fairy tale moves away from the traditional moral of true beauty coming from within and adopts the more modern mainstream plot line of all men being inherently inadequate (or evil), only gaining their humanity thru prolonged, close exposure to females. Gaston's musical number is an attack on masculinity, wholesale. Gaston is evil and inadequate BECAUSE he embodies all the traditional characteristics of masculinity.
@boxa78 But in Beauty and the Beast, the unattractive characters (Adam/Beast, Old Woman in the beginning) are, in their true forms, beautiful. Internal beauty may have been Disney's objective, but they still tried to convey it with their usual method. And even though Gaston is evil, he is still the pride of the community. Everyone in town loved him (besides Belle and her dad). What Gaston teaches kids is that you can still be adored and loved if you're evil, just as long as you're beautiful.
@yoyessie Gaston is portrayed to the AUDIENCE as a buffoon and an oaf. He's the bad guy, and he's very much unlikable. Beast is no better. In the traditional fairy tale, he's a beautiful, sensitive soul, and it's Beauty who learns to overcome her superficiality to see past his ugly exterior. In Disney's version, he is pompous, spoiled, selfish and cruel - ugly on the outside and on the inside; and it is he who learns to overcome his shortcomings thru his relationship with Belle, who is ethereal.
@boxa78 Beast is most certainly selfish and spoiled, but I wouldn't say that he's cruel. He's been lock up in this castle since he was a kid. He never had the chance to socialize normally, which is extremely important for teenage years. The only people he had to talk to were his servants, who have to obey him, so of course he's stubborn, selfish, and socially awkward, but that's not cruel. He wasn't able to change until the people around him did. Also, I have thoroughly enjoyed this discussion.
Almost all of these stereotypes are portrayed by the villans so that you dislike them more...if the hero beats the asshole in the end, it doesn't endorse the behavior, it shows that said behavior is undesirable
The point of this was that boys, like girls, feel pressure to live up to the gender roles seen in movies from a young age. Even though Gaston was the villain in Beauty and the Beast, the entire town still saw him as a smoking hot awesome guy to look up to. Even though he was a terrible person, he was still "everything a man should be." Everyone know what Disney movies can do to young girls, but know one really thinks about what it can do to young boys. That's all he was pointing out.
Simba had to be the one to fight scar to adveng his father, it was his destiny (plus, Naala beat the crap out of him twice in the movie as I recall). Gaston's masculinity is represented as a wrong value, it would be different if he were the good gy in the movie, but, the fact is that he's the bad guy whereas the beast is the good guy because he fight his animal side and becomes compationate.
What is the final goal anyway ? To have mens all become metrosexual ?
I think your portrayal of Beauty and the Beast was misguided. Yes, Gaston was masculine and all that but wasn't he an antagonist? In my opinion Gaston's bullying the others shows shows that it's Not cool; he does die in the end. He loses to the soft, hurt soul Beast (whom, once he transfigured into a human was of average build). Theres also D films like Notre Dame where disfigured Quasimodo is the hero.
mulan and lion king and hurcules were still the shit! I dont really think mulan was all that sexist, instead it adressed the issue of sexism and a strong young women who overcame it and helped to save a nation.
THUMBS DOWN to this video! showing just parts of Disney movies does not give you ''valid points'' it just MANIPULATES people who don't know the movies and their stories. NOBODY said boys should/must look like Hercules, it is just representing strength in the easiest way FOR KIDS. Mulan is just being awesome showing love and respect for his father and family, The Lion King is a beautiful movie with GREAT messages...they talk about EQUALITY, COMPASSION, RESPECT...man WATCH THE MOVIES fist!!!
@reeb4reeb0:36, those questions and the video itself are for us who saw almost all the Disney movies, no one else. Anyway they're not saying that these movies don't talk about equality, compassion and respect but the means they use are clearly stereotyped, strong men who have to save weak and nice girls from the bad guy or just fight him for other reasons. There will never be brave and strong women who save their beloved men or guy who use cleverness instead of streght to get what they need.
@Sadnessinger Didn't you see Mulan? She DID save her father, her whole family, the emperor AND China; I think that's quite good for a woman to do!.Now, as a woman I know my strengths and weaknesses; if a man attacks me, (physically talking) he might be stronger than me.That is a fact but that does not mean I'm stupid, that I cannot live on my own,or that I couldn't save myself being intelligent rather that strong.Women's roles are awesome in some other aspects. You gotta watch those movies again..
@reeb4reeb But this person isn't talking about the main themes of the films. He's addressing the gender roles in which males are given in the films. I love all of these movies, but each has the same recurring theme of masculinity. Separate your love of the film, from the roles that it places us in.
@reeb4reeb Is that not the same thing you can say about Barbie dolls? Why is it that women always say how hard it is to be a woman with advertisements telling them how to look? Men get just as much crap! Your dick is too small, you're too fat, you don't have enough muscle, etc. The truth is that you should be whoever you want and it's up to you to fight those advertisements. No more stupid excuses, it's bullshit to blame the world and never yourself.
@reeb4reeb Oh... The ignorance. At the very least, Disney is putting ideals of what young girls bodies should look like in their heads, just look at any treasured Disney princess. Big boobs, tiny waist, wide hips. Thin as a rail. And this is coming from a girl who IS thin as a rail. RAH. IGNORANCE ANNOYS THE EFF OUTTA ME.
You CANNOT use The Lion King for this video! It's called nature, HELLO?! Watch National Geographic and you will QUICKLY learn that a fight between 2 lions is ALWAYS won by the biggest and strongest lion. And for Mulan you also CANNOT use that movie. That is a historical FACT that was/is the way of the culture in China! Disney does their research, and they only portray it the way it is to be historically and scientifically accurate.
Actually I quite like Mulan and Bueaty and the beast. In batb, it depicts the moat "manly" character as the villain, the beast being one of the protagonists rather than a horrifying monster, and belle has a free spirit ( unlike someone like cinderella, who has to wait for a handsome prince to set her free)
And Mulan shows that your sex shouldn't rule your entire life. A woman doesn't need to wear make up all the time. She can become a soldier if she has the skill and ability.
OMG I cannot believe I'm making two posts for this but i really have to say this
And FYI... as a child you don't notice all these stuff that you analyze now with your adult mind (and i also think you are putting the context not Disney in a lot of them) and I really find this offensive!! It really means you don't know what a fairytale means and that they usually represent stereotypes and exaggerations... study some literature!
All the Mulan stuff are out of context and they represent exactly the opposite.
And has it occurred to anybody that most of the Disney movies plot are basted on Fairytales written by other writes... that lived in a different age then us... and yeah they might be sexist...no surprise there... since our society has been sexist from the beginning, and just now the equality of sexes has risen. So it's not Disney's fault, if you want to pick on somebody pick on the original writers of the stories.
I completely understand your standpoint, Sanjay. When young boys are exposed to particular films (not just Disney!), they definitely reinforce the masculine ideal that is so prevalent in the North American society. I don't know when the muscular, dominant and violent male ideal will subside but just as certain themes take time to shape a child's mind, I think it will be quite some time before men can begin to accept other facets that are not considered "masculine". Great points!
hey, dyke, men are supposed to be masculine, that's what being a MALE is all about you retarded bitch! what do you want men to be like, weak, cowardly feminised pussies like your father?
In Beauty and the Beast Gaston was the bad guy. It shows how that kind of masculinity is not good. The heroine ends up with the guy who finds his softer side..... so there Sanjay.
I don't know why everyone defends Disney like their lives depend on it. I love disney, but this guy does make valid points and I agree with a lot of it!!
I think precisely the opposite, disney has flaws in many aspects, but this guy came with some prety bad examples to make his point. His arguments are badly founded, once most of his examples are antagonists or outcast...
I've seen a handful of Disney movies, and most of them were as an adult. I personally don't care one way or another about disney, but I do think that this guy had a few valid points. Over all however, taking a lot of the scenes out of context to make his argument just seemed sneaky and manipulative.
@gingerisevil02 because peoples childhoods are often the defining time in their lives, anything that may threaten or upset what they see as pure and innocent about that period in their lives is seen as an attack on all purity and innocence itself.
Women are women and men are men! GOD made us that way! We are supposed to be different! Because a woman completes a man and a man completes a woman! This is ultimently better for their kids!
I get the video, but the part from Mulan I believe is Cherry Picking,In a whole another level.
Mulan was a women who needed to passed as a "man",but it points out, that women are must be socially and phisically equal to men.Socially in the concept of the irrational way of think of what man does it shows that she can do it and phisically she was able to.
But as for the other movies I is true disney is very sexist.
@whotheheckcares But the Belle was shown as wuz and even though, Gaston was strong and was shown as a real man and the others just fat a morons, the Beast is shown as a protective and strong man,and for that matter Belle was somehow a little a attracted by Gaston, she just played hard to get.
@SeanF7326 Well moron you just had answer your answer. As you said ". I mean what if they made the little mermaid a movie where Ariel were some unattractive lesbian and the men in the movie weren't strong or handsome but were just some scrawny little bitches".That proves your sexism, like if Ariel had been a lesbian the movies is just bad? So your implying there that women to be women they must be wuzzes and a man to be a man must be strong.Yeah right.
Thanks for your video. I thought I'd contribute that I think you should consider that these are the pictures of masculinity not just for young boys but for young girls too. Butch or masculine women are shown the same images, and taught the same construction of masculinity as boys, just that they are taught they're not entitled to that identity. They sit between failing an expected femininity, and struggling for access to an oppressive masculinity.
I think almost half of us would agree that the most important right women have earned is the right to remain silent, but they always seem to forget that one.
I think you took a lot of the scenes presented out of context. Disney movies have a lot of problems, but you managed to miss a lot of points or misrepresent plot points and characters entirely.
Wow, who gives a fuck? Like if you're going to bitch about a movie company who's just using tactics to make successful movies that's pretty bad... I mean what if they made the little mermaid a movie where Ariel were some unattractive lesbian and the men in the movie weren't strong or handsome but were just some scrawny little bitches? Who would have gone to watch it in theaters? Also a bunch of their movies are based on fairy tales, and they're just depicting the way the stories were told, simp

most of these are taken way out of context, Gaston is supposed to me a tool. He's the bad guy. As well the fact that in the scene from an emperor's new groove they're showing all his flaws and that he's an egotistical douche. And the point of the film moulan is that women are just as skilled as men, and that it's depicting the way of life in feudal China. In lion king what would you reather have lions do talk about who'll be dominant, because that's not what lions do.

sexism? mulan is one of the most feminist kids movie ever.

I think we need to objectify men for balance.

Omikron1112 2 weeks ago
I am writing my dissertation on masculinity in Disney cartoons however i am arguing that in order to make its male characters more appealing it emasculates them. I would agree on a few of your points but you use examples incorrectly in some cases. around 4:15 you are making a point about violence and it being weak not to dominate. when Gaston is taunting the beast its a device to make the audience empathies with the beast his lack of willingness to fight back is not a sign of weakness.
Andyrewluck44 2 weeks ago
@Andyrewluck44 there are other points too. Mulan is a good example as she spends the entire film becoming strong and independent and then when offered power and respect from the emperor she just throws it away to please her dad and get married. that's a good example.
Andyrewluck44 2 weeks ago

LovelesOne 2 weeks ago
I can understand where you're coming from in this video, however, there are a few major flaws in your argument:
1 - Gaston is a masculine freak of nature. He is portrayed in the way that he is to seem like somewhat of a crazyman at the end.
2 - Mulan joins the army to step in for her elderly father and it turne into a need to prove that women are just as capable as men.
3 - Obviosly the Lion King will have violence, THEY ARE LIONS!
The little mermaid is a perfect example of subliminal messages.

I have to agree with the maker of the video in that, it doesn't really matter if it shows the dominance or such in bad characters or if it shows realistic lions, or if Mulan is trying to make a point. When you're a child, you already understand the world, hat you're yet to learn, id how, as a member of society, you're so posed to live in it, seeing all of this as a building block for the verisimilitude of the film, or for it to look funny or to appeal to the existing world is what the kid pks up
ArturoStojanoff 3 weeks ago

I think Disney gender stereotypes in current Disney channel dramas are worse than the more complex movies.
thirdsphere145 1 month ago

I despise Disney, both man and corporation.
madamerotten 1 month ago
Any freaking human who thinks that Disney promotes Sexism point blankly has never understood a Dinsey movie. Walt Disney was a man of exalted intelligence. It is even suggested that he had his connections with the society of Priority of Sion. For God's sake-understand the philosophies in the movies before making such senseless points. You can just about twist and copy, paste any scenes with commentary that Disney promotes sexism. If you have even a trace of doubt, fuckng watch the full movies!
nqm0230 1 month ago
@nqm0230 Not all movies were made by Walt Disney himself and he was also a man affected by gender expectations of those time. While I agree some people miss the point of Disney movies, there still are some stereotypes.

Aladdin and Jafar fight for different things. Aladdin fights for good, for kingdom and for the people of Agrabah-that's why he is termed as 'diamond in the rough'. Jafar is fighting for power. He wanted the Princess initially, so he could get to the throne through her. But who won in the end? Love or Lust
nqm0230 1 month ago
In beauty & the beast, The prince was cursed to be a beast because he "judged the woman"that came to his door for help on the basis of "beauty" and turned her away. Doesn't it show not to judge people by their looks?
nqm0230 1 month ago
The Gaston song from Beauty and the Beast-The movie primarily resolves around the fact that how earlier french society taught women... should marry off early however Belle chose to differ, Gaston wants her, this is one of his cheap tricks to get her, It only reflects that background. The heroin is Belle not Gaston. It shows her courage that she broke free of the society chains.

Please giuve us a break, no woman wants an emotional, short, skinny, feminin man. the things woman complaining about sexism also do not want such men. Disney movies protray what most women secretly want. Stop LYING to yourself and us.

while portraying women exactly as they are: weak, stupid, emotional, and fragile?

caring, compassion and vulnerability are not parts of masculinity. they are part of men, and all men are feminine to an extent. but masculinity is indeed about strength and dominance.
LfunkeyA 1 month ago
@LfunkeyA To be more accurate, the meaning of masculinity and femininity is open to interpretation. I've never considered masculinity to be about dominance (and frankly that's a rather simple-minded way to think about it--what you're talking about is learned social roles, not the innate attributes of males or females).
But you ARE partially right, because masculinity/femininity are usually sexist terms, as they are based upon those same learned social conventions mentioned above.
theEarlofChip 1 month ago
@theEarlofChip
the point you're missing is that masculine =/= male, and feminine =/= female. each person has varying degrees of masculinity and femininity. i don't know why these were named with gender in mind, probably because males tend to be more masculine and females tend to be more feminine. but compassion and gentleness, while a part of every male to a degree, are not 'masculine' traits.
LfunkeyA 1 month ago
@LfunkeyA No, I fully understood what you meant. That is precisely why they are sexist terms. "Strength" and "dominance" are based upon social perceptions. The very idea of what makes someone strong is interpretive--it just so happens that our society values physical power over other forms of strength.
theEarlofChip 1 month ago
you did an amazing job on this video and you made a valid point.

Gaston is evil and inadequate BECAUSE he embodies all the traditional characteristics of masculinity.
boxa78 2 months ago
@boxa78 But in Beauty and the Beast, the unattractive characters (Adam/Beast, Old Woman in the beginning) are, in their true forms, beautiful. Internal beauty may have been Disney's objective, but they still tried to convey it with their usual method. And even though Gaston is evil, he is still the pride of the community. Everyone in town loved him (besides Belle and her dad). What Gaston teaches kids is that you can still be adored and loved if you're evil, just as long as you're beautiful.
yoyessie 1 month ago
@yoyessie Gaston is portrayed to the AUDIENCE as a buffoon and an oaf. He's the bad guy, and he's very much unlikable. Beast is no better. In the traditional fairy tale, he's a beautiful, sensitive soul, and it's Beauty who learns to overcome her superficiality to see past his ugly exterior. In Disney's version, he is pompous, spoiled, selfish and cruel - ugly on the outside and on the inside; and it is he who learns to overcome his shortcomings thru his relationship with Belle, who is ethereal.
boxa78 1 month ago
@boxa78 Beast is most certainly selfish and spoiled, but I wouldn't say that he's cruel. He's been lock up in this castle since he was a kid. He never had the chance to socialize normally, which is extremely important for teenage years. The only people he had to talk to were his servants, who have to obey him, so of course he's stubborn, selfish, and socially awkward, but that's not cruel. He wasn't able to change until the people around him did. Also, I have thoroughly enjoyed this discussion.

Almost all of these stereotypes are portrayed by the villans so that you dislike them more...if the hero beats the asshole in the end, it doesn't endorse the behavior, it shows that said behavior is undesirable
bigkj68 2 months ago 2

THUMBS DOWN to this video! showing just parts of Disney movies does not give you ''valid points'' it just MANIPULATES people who don't know the movies and their stories. NOBODY said boys should/must look like Hercules, it is just representing strength in the easiest way FOR KIDS. Mulan is just being awesome showing love and respect for his father and family, The Lion King is a beautiful movie with GREAT messages...they talk about EQUALITY, COMPASSION, RESPECT...man WATCH THE MOVIES fist!!!
reeb4reeb 2 months ago 4
@reeb4reeb 0:36, those questions and the video itself are for us who saw almost all the Disney movies, no one else.
Sadnessinger 2 months ago
@Sadnessinger Didn't you see Mulan? She DID save her father, her whole family, the emperor AND China; I think that's quite good for a woman to do!.Now, as a woman I know my strengths and weaknesses; if a man attacks me, (physically talking) he might be stronger than me.That is a fact but that does not mean I'm stupid, that I cannot live on my own,or that I couldn't save myself being intelligent rather that strong.Women's roles are awesome in some other aspects. You gotta watch those movies again..
reeb4reeb 2 months ago
@reeb4reeb But this person isn't talking about the main themes of the films. He's addressing the gender roles in which males are given in the films. I love all of these movies, but each has the same recurring theme of masculinity. Separate your love of the film, from the roles that it places us in.
Rawrzz55 1 month ago 2
@reeb4reeb Is that not the same thing you can say about Barbie dolls? Why is it that women always say how hard it is to be a woman with advertisements telling them how to look? Men get just as much crap! Your dick is too small, you're too fat, you don't have enough muscle, etc. The truth is that you should be whoever you want and it's up to you to fight those advertisements. No more stupid excuses, it's bullshit to blame the world and never yourself.
LuneyTune72 1 month ago

Glory2theLamb11 2 months ago
Actually I quite like Mulan and Bueaty and the beast. In batb, it depicts the moat "manly" character as the villain, the beast being one of the protagonists rather than a horrifying monster, and belle has a free spirit ( unlike someone like cinderella, who has to wait for a handsome prince to set her free)
And Mulan shows that your sex shouldn't rule your entire life. A woman doesn't need to wear make up all the time. She can become a soldier if she has the skill and ability.
I think those two

And FYI... as a child you don't notice all these stuff that you analyze now with your adult mind (and i also think you are putting the context not Disney in a lot of them) and I really find this offensive!! It really means you don't know what a fairytale means and that they usually represent stereotypes and exaggerations... study some literature!
DrChoopy 2 months ago

@gingerisevil02 because peoples childhoods are often the defining time in their lives, anything that may threaten or upset what they see as pure and innocent about that period in their lives is seen as an attack on all purity and innocence itself.

Mulan was a women who needed to passed as a "man",but it points out, that women are must be socially and phisically equal to men.Socially in the concept of the irrational way of think of what man does it shows that she can do it and phisically she was able to.
But as for the other movies I is true disney is very sexist.
