I featured this song in my "History of rock and pop in 100 piano / keyboard riffs video i have just posted " , i had so much fun making it and think you guys would love it .
Tons of piano songs in there for anyone looking for inspiration, and also a music quiz to see how good your knowledge is :)
Anyway, back to your video- keep up the great work and please post more videos soon!!!
@cpia2002 Thanks PJ - I just got a message from youtube saying that there was a video response from you but, as is often the case, when I check my inbox there is nothing listed.
Hi paul, I try to learn your arrangements and basically I'm getting close (although I have had no lessons, just practice a lot). However my left hand is very slow, bad technique. Can you advise me how to train to be able to do those things you do at the 10th second of this song? Same as for some impressive parts in "for once in my life".
Btw, you make playing the piano a lot of fun again, you give me the goal to learn your arrangements. Thanks for that!
@paulwwells Well, I have a Roland E-237 digital piano. It has a split functionality, but I prefer playing the only piano sound. My struggle is that, even when I get my left hand getting close to what you do, when my right hand is joined my mind says: that's too much.... How to train that I wonder (eventually to play almost like you and to make a phone call at the same time :-) )
@evkessel020675 There is some value in practicing hands separately but they won't magically come together, you have to slow it right down and play both together. But it doesn't matter how slow you have to go to get it to work, you can always speed things up with repeated playing. The secret is that the listener hears thee separate parts but it is an illusion created by playing all one pattern.
@paulwwells I play for years with basic bass on the lower hand and chords with right hand where the melody is mostly done with the pinky. You place the chords around the melody which makes the sound so good. My stuggle is the variations in the base line, my fingers wont follow that. I will need a lot of practice and slowing down. Or just take piano lessons.....
I love the way you turn your keyboard now, you're an excellent player!!!. This should saves having to do tutorials. Hey everyone, with Pauls keyboard turned this way, i would recommend downloading a VLC player!!. Its free and it has SUPER slow-motion on it.
i'm done listening to the whole thing. it's just as wonderful as i thought!! :) absolutely fantastic, amazing how you also managed to capture the second voice in some lines. <3
@heartfeltbypau It's in an awkward key for piano. Normally you want to play the chords under the tune. But if you play the tune in the correct octave there's no space underneath, so you have to put the chords above the tune. Fortunately, the nylon guitar fills fall in just the right place to catch them with the top two fingers of the right hand.
hi paul! i felt all giddy when it showed on my youtube home page that you uploaded this video. i've been looking for a good rendition of stars by simply red for a long time now. i liked this video even before listening to it, lol. and upto now, i haven't heard it yet, i have a slow internet connection so it will take a while to load. ;p
Hi Paul, what a good job you did with this one, the way you do the bass playing with your left hand is awesome, i love the way you cover songs without any in-built keyboard backing, well done mate !! :)
@ilovemusic6223 Features like that are a gift, they give the song such a strong signature from the outset which you can reproduce and then everyone knows what you're playing.
You've done it again, Paul! Superb cover. Ever consider covering Londonbeat (ie- A Better Love)? It has a great piano part and I think you would do a smashing job. Keep it up!
@sarasmilepiano Thanks for suggesting this - I've just had a listen and I do vaguely remember the song. It is a good piano part for the song in which it is embedded, but played in isolation it wouldn't sound as good.
@paulwwells Thanks for the reply. I only suggested it as I've never seen a London beat piano cover on YouTube and thought you might be familiar with it. Cheers!
A real masterpiece.

Hi Paul:)
I have the RD 700 GX ..... what instruments you use? Bass garage to the left hand?
stephcarivenc 7 months ago
@stephcarivenc I think it was the finger bass - the chorus bass tends to push everything else out of the frame
