  • It depends on how fluent you want to be but I'd say you need those 10 years just to learn decent Chinese... anyway, I don't know your studying methods so I can only say good luck!!

  • Mother Tongue: English

    1. Finnish

    2. Russian

    3. Polish

    4. German

    5 (Maybe?). Swedish

  • Since your laudable goal is to learn this many languages, have you thought of studying related languages in the same year? For instance, learn lithuanian then Latvian one year or Thai, Laotian, and perhaps Vietnamese in another year of study? I think you would find it much easier to learn the second and third anguages in the group. Another similar grouping would be Icelandic, Danish, and Swedish. Good luck in your efforts!

  • Me? I know Finnish (native)

English (I'd say fluent writing, intermediate speaking)

Russian (dropped this one since I hated it, I only remember the alphabets)

Swedish (this is a mandatory language for Finns, really, really hate it, poor skill)

Japanese (this is the language I'm most interested in, right now poor skill but gonna learn it in high school and later on some other schools and at home)

  • Great goal! But you can't learn enough in 3 months to keep the skill. There is no way you would remember even 5% of your language skills after you finished the last one. If you are super serious about learning languages and actually remembering them, I think you should pick couple of them and get actually good grip of them.

    Continues in the next post....

  • Not to be offensive, but do you have a job?

  • Polish? Good luck with that one :)

  • Great stuff! My father speaks English, Fante, Ga, Hausa (reads Arabic/Ajami), Twi. My mother speaks English, Tagalog and Visayan. Relatives speak Arabic, Cantonese, Ewe, French, Fulani, German, Gurunsi, Indonesian/Malay, Mandinka, Min-nan, Putonghua, Tausug, Wolof.

I only know English, Japanese, Tagalog (with Baybayin); some Arabic (fu97a), French, German and Hausa; and basic Malay and Mandarin. Want to gain semi-fluency with many of the languages above, but don't know how long it'd take.

  • I am currently fluent in Japanese and Hindi. These are my native languages, and English. I a now learning intermediate level Chinese and beginner level German and Russian. I LOVE languages. Bless me y'all lol.

  • How many language are you fluent in?

  • Comment removed

  • That's a neat goal. I hope you make it!

  • Kowe iso boso Jowo? can you speak javanese? which type, because we have several dialects there in Java, Indonesia. Btw, If you know German and English, you won't have a hard time in learning Dutch grammar and vocab.

  • learn kinyarwanda u will be african then hehehehe

  • You ought to look into studying Uyghur! It a language from a large ethnic group in NW China. A very fun language. I studied it for a while.

  • You left Irish off the list. Maybe you didn't know back then. Did plans change?

  • LEARN Mongolian!!!!!!!!! :) hehe

  • Comment removed

  • I have a challenge for you... Can you learn ASL (American Sign Language)? Or any other sign language in the world? Except for SEE (Signing Exact English).

  • What does it mean KaZHak? As I guess that means KazaKH (Qazaq), right? =)

And I also have detected some other mistakes in your spelling of the names of those languages... Maybe I'm too pedantic in that, but that's my feeling that we have to be more respectful to languages and to their speakers and so for that we must to try to write (to spell) the names of languages without mistakes (if it is possible). (Just my IMHO/POV.)

  • Kazhaks nd Uzbeks nd Turkish share the same Destiny...

    did you know that??

  • good luck man with your language learning , just persevere and you will reach your goal easily.

from a berber native speaker ;)

  • wow is it possible that one can even know that many at once I mean I can see 11 but that many at the end would you plan on being able to hold fluent conversation in any one of those languages at any given time anyway Love the Videos. God Bless Your Studies!

  • Your list is pretty impressive. I'm curious to know how many languages do you already speak fluently and how much time did it take to master them.

    Pozdrawiam ;)

  • im sorry but what does it mean to be polygot. does it mean to know a couple of languages at an intermediate level. or does it mean knowing a paragraph of phrases in a bunch of languages.

  • Danish... Hmm..Interesting - Held og lykke :D

  • @Bregowald I'll be blunt. Your posts sound very ignorant and racist. We as human beings need to learn how to get along with each other already; we're long overdue in that respect. Race doesn't even exist; it's a social construct created so certain ethnicities could feel superior to others. It's about high time we should stop using that term, don't you think?

  • @punkgrl325 Great response. I totally agree with what you've said here. Thanks for commenting!

  • @laoshu505000 Anytime! I love our videos, and once my Japanese is a bit more solid, I think I'm gonna try to work on French next ^^

  • @punkgrl325 nice...i learned that in Anthropology.....very well said punkgrl325

  • I am trying to learn Finnish and Korean. You could learn Finnish it is really easy

  • Comment removed

  • You seem to know where to find resources on many odd languages. Would you happen to know where I can learn some Malagasy?

  • Hi. You should look into lojban. I think you would enjoy it; it is very different from all other languages.

  • That's a pretty wide array of languages and from all continents too. Great!

  • Have you any interest in learning dutch?

  • u are an inspiration to black people everywhere. if you can do it, we can all do it.

fuck the stupid white people here commentnig on this video and givin you a hard time. Fuck white people

  • @Bregowald ...black is a culture in america....but in europe black is only a color... meaning that the black american community needs to assimilate into the mainstream culture

  • @TheJasonDR I'm proud of my black race, bitch and I dont care what you guys do ni europe. you europeans enslaved us in the first place, and yall also colonized africa. so I don't take orders from YOU

  • @Bregowald im hispanic american ...but here is what I am trying to say....im white ok my mom is white ...my dad is native taino and my sister looks indian or black ...all of my family is mixed or most of it...I have white to black ...and yet their is no division between the family...if you go to the Dominican republic you will notice that racism does not exist ...everyone is just Dominican ....not black Dominican with a different culture compared to the white dominicans ..we are all just equal .

  • @TheJasonDR i don't want my beautiful black race to be mixed together with other race.... i don't hate myself that much. i am not a self-hating black who thinks we should all mix together. fuck that shit

  • @Bregowald have you ever heard of the Melanin theory....look it up ...I dont believe it but it would make you feel good I assume...also Ancient Rome had black emperors some had names like Phillip the Niger or something like that...racism was created when anthropologist basically went around the world declaring other racial groups inferior to whites...

  • @TheJasonDR go back to europe, white boy.

  • @Bregowald im not European ...and if your black american you most likely have white in you

  • I always like to watch this video to bring me some inspiration back, for Dutch by the way, you should check out dutchfornoobs on YouTube - Liderwij (the channel owner) makes some really helpful and interesting videos. Hope the studies are going well my friend, keep it going! :)

  • have you ever made a resource video for kurdish? maybe i missed it or are you planning to do a beginners video soon?

  • @anon2k10 I think I did a while back. I will have to search for it. As far as a beginner's video, I'll see what I can do. I have quite a few things lined up for some other things already. Thanks for viewing.

  • Its cool that you also choose to learn norwegian. Norwegian and swedish have kind of similar pronunciation, and norwegian uses almost the same spelling and writing of words as danish so norwegian is kinda lingua franca in Scandinavia, because a swede and dane would understand norwegian better than a dane would understand swedish and a swede understand danish. They are mutually understandable. If you learn Noregian you should try to speak in different dialects like Vossamål, Trøndersk etc.

  • You inspire me Laoshu. I'm going to make videos like you. I would like to join the online polyglot community.

  • Keep it up man. You are awesome. Anytime you want to practice Portuguese Spanish or Korean, get in touch. Good luck.

  • Hey dude, I study translation as a career... and you know? When I saw this video I thought: What the...? How many languages does he want to learn? Damn! 60? He's out of his mind.. I can just deal with 4 and he wishes to accomplish so much in too little time? He's crazy... but after thinking about it again.. I decided to make my own list (a more realistic one, with just the half) and I've already started this adventure!(which is crushing because I don't know where to begin) I wish you luck!

  • @xxxdokiexxx Start with Dutch ;)

  • u should add cambodian (khmer) to ur list

  • do you have any interest in learning catalan?

  • @BobbyHyattVideos most definitely

  • @laoshu505000 My respect, sir! learning catalan after having learnt Spanish and Portuguese will be a hard rock , Actually, Spanish, Portuguese and Catalan are almost the same language.

  • Good luck with Dutch. I'll gladly answer all your questions about the language. I am a native speaker and I'm truly happy that you are showing interest in my language. I have studied Japanese at the university and lived in Japan for 5 months. It really helps to be in the country of the target language. Currently I'm trying Korean.

Anyway good luck with learning languages. "Veel succes en groeten uit Nederland" (= Good luck and greetings from the Netherlands).

  • Feeneesh

  • u know A lot of languages haha but wher do you from anywaise i wants to meet you in person and wants talk to you about it... and what's your original languages...

  • I would ultimately like to expose myself to a variety of languages in different groups and families. As a native English speaker I am interested in: Japanese, Arabic, Indonesian, Hindi, Icelandic, Russian, and Turkish. I think it would also be cool to know Greek and Welsh. The only language I'm strong in at this time is Spanish, though. However, I recently picked up Japanese and it's going fairly well. Best of luck to you.

  • @Nerdicusable Thanks. I wish you luck with your studies as well.

  • learn spanish and potugese

    i speak spanish and english

i am studying french and portugese

the are somewhat the same but not enough to really understand the other if they speak portugese and you speak spanish, portugese has more sounds than spanish

  • why you don't learn to spanish :/

  • i haven't even heard of half those languages lol

  • i was wondering...you've written some endangered and rare languages...how do you plan to learn them? especially ainu...i believe there exists only few speakers currently

  • You state that you would like to learn a lot of different languange and have knowledge of many of them which is very impressive. I am a little at as loss as to why you would say you want to learn related languages like Danish and Swedish, and Portugese and Spanish. If you learn Danish, Swedish or Norwegian well, you should be able to understand the other two fairly easily. The same is largely true of Spanish and Portugese.

  • @AndysLanguageBlog Wow, you are very informative. I didn't know that Cantonese was a form of Chinese. Thanks for stopping by my friend. Andy, is that your name? May I ask where you're from?

  • Comment removed

  • @AndysLanguageBlog Yea, it's a pretty crazy move. Where are you from though?

  • its Xhosa, pronounced like the Xh in Zulu and with an s not sh :)

  • One latvian subscriber looking forward to hear you! :)

    Veiksmi! = Good luck!

  • Let me know how your German goes as I've been studying it for 4 1/2 years and have only reached higher intermediate level (mostly because I've never really been out there). Good luck with your goals, great to see someone with such a passion for languages.

  • @pulsengine Thanks, I will keep you updated.

  • I am a Javanese (and Indonesian) native speaker. I'd be glad to teach you Javanese ^^

  • well in 200 comments no one has asked on what basis you chose these out of the 6000+ that exist since you dont have a clear favorite family/region and probably dont know enough about typology to be going for breadth. im particularly puzzled as to how you chose ones you dont even know the proper names of, as it cannot be the culture. that's probably why people are saying it seems naive or whatever.

  • @brandoscostumes I have no idea, may just be mental problems

  • @laoshu505000 inability to accept criticism/preference for mindless praise dont necessarily constitute mental disorders, though arguably learning navajo etc is sadomasochism!

  • @brandoscostumes Yea, I be trying to keep these hawthorn berrie extract and soy ice cream stains cleaned up, but I have problems doing so because the learning process is so addictive

  • is it really that easy for you to dust off your prior knowledge of a language even from a few years ago, or does it take you at least a week or so of review? impressive anyway

  • @brandoscostumes That's a good question. It normally takes me at least 1 week to get everything oiled up.

  • What about Hungarian or Finnish? :)

  • Croatian? Lijepo. :)

If you'll have any questions considering this language, feel free to ask.

    Good luck with all these.

  • Oh, which Creole were you referring to in the beginning of this video? Haitian Creole?

  • hey can you provide me any resources for Russian? im really into learning russian

    :)

ill give you a tip for portuguese learning, the setences mostly of the times the words must be in reversed order. you will notice that and it will help!

    Boa Sorte!

  • Fiinisch... hahaha. funny. It's finn-ish. Like Huckleberry Finn, and then ish ;)

  • I want to see a video yours speaking Portuguese.

  • Ainu? That'd be awesome! XD

  • I've got 23 binders O' Fun. :P Learn Quechua!

  • i was about to say u forgot hungarian but there u go :) its gonna be one of the most difficult, sorry :P

or at least thats what they say

  • I'd definitely love to chat with you in Danish, Hebrew, German and Greek. :)

  • Cén fáth nach bhfuil ag foghlaim na Gaeilge a labhairt

  • Im glad you want to learn danish and croatian :)!

  • Your videos are inspiring... but just fyi Persian is called Farsi. Im sure you already knew that but i just saw that on the board and felt i should tell you.

  • @nneuhaus84 eh, it's both. Farsi is just another name for Persian (well in english it is)

  • You only need to learn swedish in order to be able to communicate with the Danish and Norweigans as well.

  • @lordmetroid Is that so?

  • @laoshu505000 At least for the native speakers of the Danish, Norweigan and Swedish. We speak to each other in our native tongue, I am sure you as well would be able to speak to any person speaking either of these languages if you knew one of them.

  • @laoshu505000 No, I dont think thats correct. I would say that (at least historicallly) swedish has been sort of the lingua franca in the scandinavian countries (including Finland). Mostly because it is the biggest language, but also becuase the swedes understand less danish and norwegian than the other way around. Spelling swedish seems more irrational though than perhaps norwegian. Danish is in another leauge here because of the pronounciation.

  • xhosha? I don't want to be mean, but if you really had knowledge of xhosa, (it's spelled xhosa btw, the first letter of the word is a click, haha, but i love you man i love you're vids, didn't mean to be mean,

but yes, could you really describe what you mean by "have knowledge" in a language, is that just knowning a few phrases etc?

  • @Stealthanugrah Just to let you know, I've never studied Xhosa. This is just one of the languages that I will be studying in the future.

  • @laoshu505000 so does having knowledge, mean you know it exists, studied about the languages whereabouts? but yeah i totally understand it's for the future, i have a list too, haha it's fun writing down what u want to learn

  • @Stealthanugrah When I say having knowledge in the language, that means to be able to speak the language at least on an intermediate level.

  • Bro do you live in the desert?

  • Hey! Do you know any good resources for Estonian online? :)

  • @heslop01 Yes, I will send you a link where you can find a very good Estonian course. They won't allowme to post it here.

  • @laoshu505000 Oh thank you so much! :D

    tänan :)

  • @laoshu505000 Awesome man, ill sub to your channel cuz i like languages too. I' turkmen, originally, but speak russian, turkmen, english and bit of polish.

  • Glad to see polish on the list ! I wonder when you'll start ! It's an awesome language ! Very different from russian !!!

  • woooop woooop!!!! :D somaliii lol im somali so if u need any help holla!

  • I am a native speaker of Ukrainian, so if you make some Ukrainian videos, I'll be there to? comment :)

That's a long list, and it made me wonder, how do you describe a state of "knowing a language"? I mean, there's got to be some point for each language where you intend to stop and say "that's it, time to move on". When does this usually happen?

  • @tarulis77 in my opinion, its when you can do a few things. 1. Read the newspaper and or articles in the desired language. 2 (most find this funny) Wikipedia. You'd be surprised at how much you realize you know, if you can read an entire article and fully understand it. and finally 3. Think in it. Replace every word in your head, to the desired language. If you can do that for an entire week, and not come across any problems/minimum. then believe me. you are done

  • i feel you. knowledge of other languages at least on the intermediate level will become a great asset to you when communicating with different people. i've studied arabic, french, spanish and recently due to new family members; chinese and yoruba.

  • That's a lot, I wish you the very best. I want to speak, read & write 15 really well & I'm working toward that now (I'm 16). I suggest that you gain some sort of exposure to all, decide on the few you feel close to, and do advanced studies in those... 20 of them, perhaps?

Why not strike out ones in similar pairs like Urdu/Hindi and Malay/Indonesian?

I speak English & Tamil, learn French & self-teach Czech. Beginning conversational Mandarin & self-taught German these hols.

    Cheers from Singapore!

  • @JayashriV Hey, thanks foer the comment. You're right, it is ideal to learn those languages that are very similar. I've actually started learning them.

  • Respect !!! . This is very cool to learn lot of languages, but will u remember them like , if u learn lots of lots of languages they are going to be mixed . u will speak like in differend languages and i think lots of those languages u will forgot. But keep up!

  • Ocio al máximo BC

  • just wondering...once you do your three month intensive study and reach an intermediate level, do you continue studying them at all (besides your random weekend study)? Is it in your goals to maintain the languages you have learned, or do you just intend to "crack" the language once and then move on?

When I use the word crack I mean in terms of breaking through that spoken and written comprehension barrier.

  • That's quite an ambitious list, good luck to you! I speak Esperanto, so if you ever have any questions about Esperanto, I'm always more than happy to ŝare my knowledge with aspiring Esperantistoj.

    Bonan ŝancon, kaj lernadon!

  • finnish(suomi) is pronounced just like finish in english. if you want to be fully submersed in the language without going to finland just go to Northern MN haha.. romanian is the coolest sounding language ive ever heard in my life, have fun with that, alot of good romanian hip hop

  • its nice to have high goals to learn many languages. People may say that its a lot of languages but if you look at it some of the languages belong to the same branch so it should make it easier to learn new languages. Im 18 and I would like to learn about 15 languages at least at a basic level... so Im just saying that anything is possible

  • Amazing list. I speak English and German (conversational). My current goals are Irish, Spanish, French, Italian, Danish, Norwegian, Swedish (by the end of this year). Keep up the good work! BTW If you people need a real native polish speaker just let me know. I can help.

  • Hi there,

I see that you would like to learn Wolof, I would also like to learn this language because I may be going to the Gambia next year , but I can't find any Wolof resources. Do you know of any? Great job with your videos! Keep up the good work!

  • your vdeos are amazing and a great help - i see you are going to learn Wolof. I would like to learn a bit of this because I might be going to the Gambia next year. Do you know of any good resources to learn Wolof from? y

  • Wonderful , keep up the good job !

great video ! 5 stars for it !

  • I've studied German for the last few years and continue to try to improve/maintain it. Now I'm studying Italian. I'd really love to learn an Asian language one day, like Japanese. I have a friend who is Korean so that interests me, too! So much to choose from...

I enjoyed your video and I look forward to watching more! Keep up the good work!

  • wow nice list! unfortunately i don't even have the time to learn one language intensively ): i would like to be a polyglot too though.

my list would be: spanish (which i'm learning), japanese, finnish, and possibly polish. =)

i would like to learn a few others too but my main focus would be on the list above.

  • Amazing list :O

My list would be (in random order)

    Japanese,Spanish,Portuguese,Korean,Mandarin, Taiwanese(Maybe Cantonese later),Indonesian,Tagalog, and Swahili ._.

    :D

best of luck to you though~ I really like your videos :DD

  • These are high goals. That's good. One should set high goals, even goals that may some unrealistic to many. I want to encourage you, however, to pick some languages in which you want to reach an advanced level.

  • @Linguist1967 Great encouragement. It seems that we both have different goals- different folkes different strokes right?

  • @laoshu50500 I'm not sure our goals are all that different. I want to make connections with people and it seems you do as well. You don't seem to have Latin or Ancient Greek on your list. All of your languages are living languages. Everyone of them are currently spoken somewhere in the world.

  • On top of French, German, and English, I'd like to study: Swedish, Finnish, Xhosa, isiZulu, Swahili, Arabic (MSA), Cantonese, Javanese, Southern Saami, Scottish Gaelic, Korean, Japanese, Hindi, Nahuatl, Afrikaans, and Welsh. It's a pretty big list, but I'm planning on making this a life experience and not just a "study it for 4 years and be done with it" type thing. I do have priorities though, like Swedish and Zulu are above Nahuatl and Finnish.

  • Hey there Moses! Seems like you are having fun reaching your lofty goal(s). Hey CocaCola, hire this guy to do commercial spots for your drink! No need for dubbing. I am very interested in foreign languages too but do not seem to get very far. I did study french, spanish, Italian, German, Tagalog, Farsi, Mandarin, Cantonese, (English of course!), Korean, Japanese, Malay, Thai and Indonesian but am not good at most of them! *sigh* Cheers from one polyglot to another!

  • I'm gonna be honest here, but I think your goals are pretty unrealistic. That looks to be about 60-70 languages on that board, and you want to reach an intermediate level in every single one? Quality, not quantity, my friend. If you devote all your time to learning a bazillion languages just for the heck of it instead of a handful that truly interest and captivate you, you'll end up knowing nothing more than how to say "how are you" in a couple dozen languages, nothing more.

    But to each his own

  • Thanks for the comment and viewing.

  • @repaeu Sounds like he is having fun doing so. I can see him being discovered by a MNC and doing commercial spots for various geographic markets.

  • @repaeu Well said. I'v been studing A language, and even that takes a while. This guy is very confused.

  • @repaeu, well he would know more than "how are you" , he is not an average person. he is genius.

  • @repaeu way to unrealistic. I think you are trying way to hard to be something you are not. its good to learn a different language, but if its only for the purpose to say that you are going to learn it just to say you know it, will do you no good. i am learning Thai now, but only because my wife is Thai and want to talk with her family better and maybe work in THAILAND some day. I truthfully dont think your goal is possible in 10 years. if so, then you my firend are unaturally gifted. Good Luck!

  • @repaeu It's not very unrealistic. If he gained an intermediate level in one language every two months he could learn 60 in 10 years. Not unrealistic considering there is an Irish polyglot who has became fluent in several languages in only 3 months.

  • Aww man, Shanghainese isn't on that list :( Congratulations for making that video though, I will try making a similar one (even though mine only has 6-8 languages in it). Hopefully this will make me more committed to my goals. I tend to get crazy about new languages once in a while and then forget about them.

  • So many languages to list, I forgot to add some.

  • Yeah that's right ! And we have to respect the goals of the other language learners, that's one of the most important thing when learning language !

  • I prefer to invest this time in rare languages like armenian ^_^

  • Everyone has their own goals right?

  • Because I don't have motivation to learn a language which don't belong to a real culture xD

  • I see

  • what your job? i mean what do you do to support yourself b/c studying all these languages must take time and resources

  • i can help you out with Uzbek :) and Persian

  • Cool, thanks.

  • May I ask you a question? Why do you want to learn an artificial language such as esperanto?

  • Why not?

  • so here's my so far list, to the web world viewers

continue learning past my intermediate level: Hebrew, and German

continue from a dabbling level: Korean, Arabic, Serbian, Esperanto, Estonian, Punjabi

start learning: Navajo, Cherokee, Amharic, french, Russian, Spanish, Urdu, Tibetan, Hindi,(& old Sanskrit alphabet)..

plus create my own language... and i sure ill add to this list

  • Where do you normally practice Esperanto?

  • awesome

  • This is one impressive list! Have fun and good luck with those languages!

The Foreign Service, translation services etc will probably drool over you, if you would just know half of these languages. :)

My own list is considerably shorter, but sort of planned out for my entire life O_o

  • can't wait till you start polish... I need to find someone on skype who wants to do a Polish/English language exchange pretty soon, my wife doesn't like to help me when my Polish :(...

Great list Moses, crazy long, but great...

  • My list:

Already conversation level or better in:

English, German, Ukrainian, Russian, Cantonese, French, Esperanto, Mandarin, Mongolian (close).

Learning: Japanese (3 years uni already but forgotten lots)

Finnis, Vietnamese, Spanish (can already read it pretty well), Greek, Swahili, Croatian, Albanian, Basque, Indonesian, Arabic, Polish, Ido, Hungarian, Portuguese, Persian, Italian (used to be conversational), Turkish, Kazakh, Catalan, Danish , Romanian, Thai, Dutch, Taiwanese, Norwegian.

  • Wow, you have a huge list there too.

  • ah ok I see, You'll learn dutch from netherlands xD !

  • I'm really looking forward to your dutch !!! Will you learn dutch from Belgium or Dutch from Netherlands?

  • That's a good question. I'm not sure. I guess it depends on what type of Dutch is used in the teach yourself series.

  • With the exception of Catalan, I've just realized.

  • All the languages I want to learn are included in your list :D

  • You have a GIFT, good sir. I hope you're putting it to good use, or will do.

I mean, Syriac?! Mayan? Tlingit? Wolof? Twi? Some of these I've never even heard of?! And I pride myself on knowing the world.

Not to mention that, heck, I struggle enough with just english. ;D

    I'm glad you share, though.
