I absolutely love this conductor's passion here (as others have said too). That is the true spirit of music; you can tell he really feels it; There really should be others of his profession with this same fervor; it adds to the whole experience musicians and audience alike! Compelling stuff.
Continued...However in the video I did notice at around 1:15-1:17 footage seems to have been cut/edited together, the frames don't match up smoothly, sorry too tired at the moment to analyze but it's a bit curious, excuse my ignorance.
The sort of asymmetrical passage at the end of the scherzo section, right before the trio begins (around 1:25) is endlessly fascinating. I've heard it about a million times and still haven't figured out how it works.
the advantage of a smaller orchestra is the clarity in the instrumentation and timbre that you wouldn't hear in an orchestra of grand size. The French Horns are quite prominent in this ensemble which is why Beethoven wrote this movement as he did...to feature other voices in the orchestra besides strings
