  • Anyone who used the flv stereo trick like I did are now getting screwed :S I've recently lost stereo on a few of my videos, just like this one. Video quality has degraded too. To make matters worse, many older videos that were uploaded normally are now being converted to stereo by default! LOL Guess that taught me not try and get clever with youtube! XD

  • Well, at least it was cool at the time. I get the feeling the YT highly trained monkeys (as they jokingly refer to themselves sometimes) are continuously working to improve the quality. Playback has been pretty inconsistant lately but I have to say that overall I'm VERY happy with the changes- especially the HD stuff. Yea, the old stuff may be pooped now, but worst case you just re-make your vids and send up the new version. That way, I get to fix some of my old mistakes too! :-)

  • Yeah, i'm happy with most of the changes too. i might remake some of those videos again, if i get the time, but i would have to start from scratch. or maybe those YT monkeys might decide to convert them back to decent quality in the future.

  • I'm definitely leaving my old vids online. Like you say, chances are good they will continue to retro-actively improve the playback quality of them. Besides, I'd rather not lose the aggregate view count and comments.

Fortunately for me, I kept the original hi-quality finished vids as master copies, and WMM timelines w/original clips intact after I generated the LQ FLV stereo versions, so re-make and/or re-upload is a no problem. Sure takes lots of space to store all that footage tho!

  • I don't get it (watch/listen to my test video). When I play it back I only hear mono sound without the switch (with I hear it in stereo). I upload WMV files 2.1 MBps. Does I do something wrong here?

  • The reason I get stereo by default on this video is that it was specially encoded at a low bitrate to avoid YouTube upload conversion - that's why the audio and video quality are so poor.

The way you are doing it now is much better quality, and all you have to do is provide your viewers with the link and &fmt=18 switch for them to get the stereo.

If you want to encode your own .FLV files, the info is in the details of this video. :D

  • WHAT? This audio is clearly in stereo as is. But when I add &fmt=18 to the video ID like you suggest to it becomes mono for me. This seems to be the exact opposite of what you say should happen in your latest post. How do you explain this?

  • This vid was encoded in RIVA low bitrate .FLV format to "trick" the old YT U/L system to avoid re-encoding into mono. (See vid details)

Stereo is automatic now: just upload any stereo vid. YT makes at least 3 versions of it; 1)standard quality mono, 2)HQ video mono, and 3)HQ video/stereo. Which one you see depends on your playback and bandwidth settings (in your YT menus) and the &fmt=18 modifyer. Some users (like me) must add &fmt=18 to get the stereo version every time. :D

  • How upload video stereo Sound Anyone Help Me ??

  • It's really easy now - just make your video in stereo and upload it normally. When you play it back, just add &fmt=18 to the video ID and you'll get the HQ stereo version instead of the LQ mono one. :D

  • Thank you My friend Im sub you ..)

  • 5/5 as always. 8)

Very beautiful ;) They look so cool the way they move..and they look so soft...even with those miniture looking cactus spikes on their bodies XD

  • They look so soft and colorful, don't they? Heh heh heh ...but THIS caterpillar STINGS! The spines are actually somewhat soft and you can touch them if you're careful. But too much pressure and YOWIE! The sting(s) feel like nettles - you'll know, if you've ever had the misfortune to run into a patch of THOSE! (*I* have!) 8-[

  • Looks like youtube changed the server software this week. FLV video clips evn with a video/audio bitrate of no more then 336, now only stay in stereo for about an hour after upload then it switches to mono. I wonder what happened. They must have a stereo detection in the software. The stereo clips already uploaded aren't affected, only the new ones. Why would that be so suddenly?

  • Bummer - Considering their recent "watch in high quality" feature I would have thought they'd be working improve audio quality and PRESERVE stereo rather than kill it. At some point they'll have to, 'cause mono isn't going to cut it forever.

  • Is your original 640x480 pixels or bigger?

  • The original realtime video sequences are full-frame NTSC at 720x480. They were captured via IEEE 1394 firewire directly from the DV camcorder.

  • There are big pixels seen in both cases. I noticed this happens to very many people.

  • I guess the bottom line is that you can only get so much motion/detail out of 200-300kbps. Videos with less movement (i.e. static backgrounds) are much clearer. Such is the nature of MPEG compression! :-)

  • Hi,i see your new movie!

The caterpillar looks like a cactuses!

    Nice to see.

    Music is also good!!

    Greetings Paula.

  • Thanks, Paula! :-)

  • excellent and the stereo split is stunning. didn't know it was possible. will be giving this a test ride soon.

    thanks,

    tg

  • I chose that particular video because it was short and the tune had lotsa stereo separation for the demo. At 80kpbs the stereo effect should be as good as the source audio. If some really weak audio bit rate (i.e. < 64) is selected, who knows what it might sound like! :)

  • Yikes! It took me long enough to master converting my mov files to avi - this is WAY beyond me!

  • It's really not so bad - I did all the trial and error work already! :-) Once you know the "secret" formula, it only takes a minute to encode your own FLV files, and they upload MUCH faster. However, there's a trade-off between stereo sound and video quality so you have to decide which is more important. :)

  • Wow, You are definetly right. There is a major difference. However i do think the visual aspect of your videos is more essential than the sound.

  • Yea, I agree - close-up detail really counts, at least in my videos! The image quality gets even worse with more movement and detail. However, a fairly static subject and not-to-deep detail might not pixelize so much, allowing a stereo soundtrack to improve the overall show. I'll have to decide on each video individually. Cheers! :-)
