They may indeed be the most interesting band of this era....but not for musical reasons, just plain weirdness, oddballness. Even at this the sparse renditions of these songs are extremely crude and almost non-musical, which is itself interesting. But let's face it, there is no musicianship here, just textured compositions in the service of an interpretive vocal. I don't get it, I don't know if anyone can get this music, not even them.
I find the music of residents very interesting and unique... even when they don't have vocal parts...
There is a different kind of musicality... even i dare say ...virtuosity in the way they play, it's not just the theatric act and their shows... 'though i must admit that i have not missed a single one of their performances in Greece since 1990 when they came to Athens for the first time to do this show.. UNFORGETABLE experience !
Got to go on record here that Homer Flynn, the "spokesman" for the group, is actually the guy behind the project. The voice of this guy talking is very similar to Homer Flynn in interviews. The 4th resident is someone else to keep up the enigma.
Yes truly, musical reinterpretation. It's horrid, it's hideous, it's just weird, but it is a legitimate musical statement. Anyone can see that they've put effort into this, but the key to the residents is the layers of the underlying music combined with the visual presentation.
i saw them perform this from the 2nd row in nyc when they were touring "the history of american music in 3 EZ pieces". -- best concert i've ever been to.
The Residents, in this particular instance, have taken something initially presented as being a sweet country swing and turned it into something that sounds frighteningly obsessive, violent, and brooding. That's how I feel. But I think what you're trying to do is postulate that you think it's generally unpleasant and do not understand why others might enjoy it. You, who plays jazz guitar. Thank you for commiserating.
That makes so much sense now. I grew up with Pee Wee's Playhouse as a kid...and when I first heard The Residents I always thought had this bizarre familiarity.
what a lot of people don't realize is that ,former heavyweight boxing champ larry holmes is actully the guy singing.not flynn.kinda crazy is'nt it.and don't forget SHORT SHEETS MAKE THE BED LOOK LONGER
this was the weirdest show i've seen. i always enjoy their shows and always go and see them every time they come to Greece but the cube e show was the one that impressed me the most.

Elvis was a piece of shit. At least psychedelics make you think weird shit, and twist your brain into knots. Opium just makes you think that your fat nasty ass is amazing. heroin is responsible for more shitty music than cocaine even, at least cokeheads have the energy to see their shitty ideas to the end. Just think disco, there is so much effort put into that stuff
Not as complex as Zappa was but way weirder. There's hardly any music as strange as the Residents, save for some of John Zorn or Captain Beefheart's work.
grandiosi the Residents !!! molto più seri di certi gruppi metallari che vorrebbero essere inquietanti e sacrileghi quando invece fanno solo ridere ...
I'm not sure how much I like the residents' music, but i feel like I would be missing out on an incredible experience if I get the chance to see them and I don't take it.
Yeah!!! I was at the Residents` Elvis show in the late 80`s! I watched over 1000 gigs from several bands all the years, but this evening is one of my alltime topten memory ever!!! It was an unbelievable live power!!! One of the most genius tours from the Residents for me! Still love `em! Thanks for this video!!!
I love (ne, worship) Frank Zappa... I understand Captain Beefheart and Tom Waits, but I love the Residents. Check out "Demons Dance Alone" and you'll see what I mean.

And that's why I don't do drugs.

Because The Residents are by far, the most interesting band of this era.
