@shitbagsmith Who says gay guys only like disco music and show tunes? I've been a rock & roll guy most of my life, have no use for Madonna, Lady Gaga-goo-goo, or "Glee."
But, along with The Cowsills, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, The Everly Bros., Eddie Cochran, Ricky Nelson, The Ronettes, The Beach Boys, the Stones, The Shangri-Las, Lesley Gore, Herman's Hermits, Dusty Springfield, The Sonics, The New York Dolls, The Ramones, Blondie, The Undertones, and The Lyres rule!
@shitbagsmith@shitbagsmith I may also say now what, as a ten year-old boy, I didn't know and/or dare say back in the Dark Ages of 1968, that I also had a really big crush on Johnny Cowsill!
@shitbagsmith By the way, I still love David and Shaun Cassidy, and I still adore The Cowsills! Along with The Everly Brothers, that Rhode Island family produced some of the most beautiful harmonies ever laid down on the tracks of popular music recordings.
@shitbagsmith In fact, from an overnight rerun of that same talk show, about a year later, I heard from an old friend who happened to recognize my appearance in the studio audience of WBZ's edition of "People Are Talking," an episode starring Tom Bergeron, co-starring David Cassidy and, well, myself!
@shitbagsmith I didn't notice an appreciable spike in attendance at my band's show, from my plug of it on the local TV talk show. But, attending Cassidy's gig (which included his TV bro, Danny Bonaduce, warming up with his stand-up comedy routine) the night of his Boston TV talk show appearance, I learned something of the power of television, as several people came up to me and said they'd watched me on TV earlier that day.
@shitbagsmith But even if I didn't receive a completely honest answer to my question, I got to plug my own band's later-in-the week gig on that talk show with David Cassidy anyway, which (along with a bleached-blond, heavy metal wig concealing my off-stage skinhead appearance) put a smile on Cassidy's then-still-youthful face.
@shitbagsmith What can I say? Nuns and singing families, as well magic nannies, were all the rage in the mid-1960s.
Anywayz, Cassidy shrugged off my question. And, in fairness, maybe the negotiations with The Cowsills went down before Screen Gems involved him in "The Partridge Family?" Although I still find it hard to believe he, as the series' huge star, was unaware of its true history all those years later.
@shitbagsmith Cassidy denied it. But a friend who knows Susie Cowsill told me not only was that true, but Screen Gems had gone so far as to shoot some pick-up footage of The Cowsills in their home, had actually pitched a series about America's favorite family rock & roll band. It was also, after all, the era of the huge popularity of The Von Trapp Family, from the film version of Rodgers & Hammerstein's "The Sound Of Music" that starred "Mary Poppins."
@shitbagsmith Shame on them. Mrs. Cowsill was fabulous, and cool and hip for a parent of that era. She even reminded me of the mom of some classmates of mine, a woman who, coincidentally, also shared with the Cowsills' mom the first name of "Barbara."
@shitbagsmith I was lucky enough (thanks to my rock & roll appearance; was a vocalist in a garage/punk band at the time) I was selected to ask Cassidy a question on-camera. So I confronted "Keith Partridge" with what I knew to be a fact--that Screen Gems Productions originally wanted the actual Cowsills for a situation comedy TV series, but with an actress as their mother, because ABC and/or SG didn't think the late Barbara Cowsill photogenic enough.
@shitbagsmith About 20 years ago, I was in the studio audience of the Boston franchise of the syndicated TV talk show "People Are Talking," hosted by Tom Bergeron (now of "Dancing With The Hollywood Squares On America's Funniest Videos"), when actor/singer David Cassidy was a guest.
Oh my God that song still sounds great. That is one of the best little lost gems of all time. The Cowsills still sound great. As my mother would say, "God love em." Peace.
Susie is still a cutie.

@shitbagsmith You got that right.
The Cowsills were and are the REAL (caps for emphasis, not in anger) "Partridge Family,"
Or maybe better put that "The Partridge Family" were the FAKE Cowsills?
David Cassidy and Shirley Jones could sing beautifully. But the rest all fiction.
