Recently rediscovered Barbara's music. I must say that she could sing the phone directory and make it sound good, she is such a cracking singer. Easily the best version of this song, and i have listened to many.
Was it banned because he sang "Oh my Lord"? Did the BBC think it was blasphemous?
Amazing how the BBC let other stuff through the net.., the #1 British Single Ebeneezer Goode Sing "E's are good"...mind you i suppose it was the 50's.

Barbara had a great tone to her voice at both ends of her range. I always forget how good she was.

Kenrew,
Yes kangaroocomedy, the B.B.C were very
straightlaced in the 50s and "MY Lord"
and other references to God were not acceptable.
It didn't harm Frankie Laine anyway because both versions zoomed up the charts.
Barbara's version gave the song a new dimension, the same as she has done with
other songs.

Kenrew.
This was a big hit in the 50s for Frankie
Laine although it was a much slower version.
The B.B.C. banned Frankie's version until the lyrics were changed.
Barbara's upbeat version in the 70's let us know that great things were to come from this
great singer.
