Hezbollah kidnapped israeli soldiers to exchange them for Samir Kuntar who murdered an Israeli family including children.
Israel did free him to get their soldiers back but it turned out hezbollah killed them (as well as 8 other soldiers).
this was an unprovoked attack by hezbollah which started the war.
when israel went after them to rescue their soldiers they started bombing israeli cities with their rockets and escalated the situation to a full scale war
